However, when testing this I came across the "Personal.XLS locked for editing" message.

It seems that this is due to having more than one instance of Excel running at one time.

Dave Peterson at http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-2831009.php has suggested a solution to this.

This involves marking the personal.xls file as read-only and this, indeed, seems to stop the error.

If you haven't come across the personal.xls file before it's a hidden workbook that opens when you start Excel. Any code in this workbook is available in all workbooks you have open in Excel.

On a Windows XP machine the file is usually located in the Excel startup folder at:

C:\Documents and Settings\[UserName]\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

If you're using Vista it's probably in the folder at:

C:\Users\[UserName]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

where [UserName] is the user name you're currently logged onto the machine as.

However, the file could be located elsewhere so use Search to find it if it's not in the folders mentioned above.

Although making the file read-only solves this problem it does raise other issues if you often add code to personal.xls but is a useful workaround in my situation.

Pentru a putea fi interpretat de catre Excel-ul de pe statia client, trebuie modificat MIME Type-ul in application/xls.
Dupa aceasta configurare, fisierele xls vor putea fi editate local.

De asemenea, trebuie asociat un icon MIME Type-ul application/xls in System Administration > Content Management > Utilities > Icons.

De esta forma ya no es necesario enviar documentos por correo o almacenarlos en un pendrive. Microsoft Office Live Workspace es el nombre de la aplicación y en su Web ofrecen mas información sobre sus características,. Esta aplicación sirve básicamente para almacenar y compartir por lo que si buscas algo mas, es decir una suit ofimática on line puedes acudir a los servicios conocidos de Google Docs, Zoho y  ThinkFree (este informa de su total compatibilidad con MS-Office).

    Más útil parece Repair My Word un programa gratuito que sirve para reparar archivos de word dañados. Hay que mirar los mensajes de error que presentan los archivos cuando se intentan abrir ya que sólo se pueden reparar los que presentan determinados mensajes. Es necesario acudir a la web del proveedor de Repair My Word para comprobar los errores que se pueden reparar y ver que existen otros programas para reparar distintos tipos de ficheros, Repair My Excel es de pago pero CWR Repair (fotos en formato Canon RAW) también es gratis.

    Siguiendo la línea de configuración del sistema, voy dejar listo el software para grabar CD/DVD y para poder abrir los documentos más comunes que podemos encontrar, .doc .xls .ppt y .pdf.

    Por defecto, Gnome incorpora dos programas para grabar CD/DVD, Brasero y Gnome CD/DVD Creator, pero leyendo en distintos foros de internet, catalogan K3B como uno de los mejores, junto a Brasero. Asique en este caso voy a dejar todos instalados, que nunca está de mas.


    Voy al gestor de aplicaciones, Equipo -> Más aplicaciones y compruebo que falta el K3B, pero después de instalar los codecs ya aparece.



    Voy a hacer una prueba de grabación, primero con K3B. Copia de DVD a DVD.



    Y luego la misma operación con Brasero.
    La verdad que los dos programas son muy intuitivos y bastante fáciles de usar. Para los que estamos acostumbrados a Windows, son muy similares a NERO, pero con la gran ventaja de que éstos son gratuitos, licencia GPL.


    Una vez hechas las grabaciones correctamente, voy a configurar, o mejor dicho instalar el Adobe acrobat reader, que es el más común lector de archivos pdf.
    Equipo -> Instalar software y selecciono la casilla Disponible. En el listado voy bajando hasta que localizo acroread, y selecciono Instalar.


    Una vez termina el proceso, compruebo que aparece en el listado de las aplicaciones.
    Equipo -> Más aplicaciones y efectivamente, ahí está.


    Ejecuto el programa y cargo un documento al azar, una guia del montaje de un PC que encuentro en la red.
    Lo abre sin problemas.


    Ahora voy con el resto de documentos. Linux implementa Openoffice, una suite ofimática gratuita que no tiene nada que envidiar al conocido Office de Microsoft. Y como anteriormente, es de licencia GPL y totalmente gratuito.
    Pincho dos veces sobre el .doc y me lo abre sin problemas Openoffice Writer.


    Hago lo propio con el .ppt y con el .xls y el mismo resultado. Openoffice Base y Openoffice Impress también son capaces de abrir sin incompatibilidad alguna los ficheros generados en Windows.

    Un nuevo y pequeño avance, pero un gran paso para mi.

I wanted to generate Excel from Codeigniter. Because of that I needed a way to use it whether or not PEAR is running/installed, etc. My local dev box doesn't (yet) have it but that's a story for another time.

    The talented developers at Pizza SEO repackaged one of the recent versions of Spreadsheet Excel Writer as a set of classes together. No PEAR, no installing of separate items, etc. Normally I would like PEAR and it is on the deployment server but I wanted a portable flexbile version that worked within CodeIgniter and this fit the bill. Brutal stuff. Couldn't find a way around it. Did it by hand in the end. Nasty. The problem was that I was getting

    UnicodeEncodeError: 'latin-1' codec can't encode character u'\u2122' in position 12: ordinal not in range(256)

    where the '\u2122' is the '™' symbol. There were some others as well. Finally happened upon this post which, fortunately, cleared it up. To use this tip with SqlSoup, the connection string needs a couple of extra parameters.

    Instead of

    db = SqlSoup('mysql://user:password@host:port/database')

    use

    db = SqlSoup('mysql://user:password@host:port/database?charset=utf8&use_unicode=0')

    The requirement of course is that the database tables are set up with the UTF-8 charset.

    But now I can thrash data at will! Mwahahahaha! Sorry... but now I can pull in unicode data from an Excel file and throw it into a database with rediculous ease. OK not rediculous ease but wow this simplifies it.

    [edit]I like to use iPython to do my data thrashing with SqlSoup and SqlAlchemy. If you use the second connection string with the charset and use_unicode options, don't reset the db connection to the previous one without those. Once doing that I couldn't set it back and had to exit and restart the session. Bummer.[/edit]

I am working on a project that uses PHP. But I still do my data mangling with Python because of tools like SqlSoup running under SqlAlchemy. Using those under iPython has saved incredible amounts of time. I actually like working with data in this way. It just makes it more fun. Well, I have some data in an Excel file that has multiline text in it. That can be a pain with CSV files. A little digging located a Python Excel writer which had stopped development, with the suggest to use a Python port of a Perl writer, which while cool for writing, has trouble reading... but a helpful post pointed to xlrd. A quick "sudo easy_install-2.5 xlrd" later and I was able to do:

    sh = book.sheet_by_index(0)
    for r in range(sh.nrows)[1:]:

    Sweet. Indeed. All of the Unicode elements and multilines are intact and good to go. Good stuff.

    Giunto alla terza versione è in grado di leggere e modificare i file .doc , .xls , .ppt e inoltre,novità di questa ultima versione è compatibile con sistemi operativi Windows,Linux,OpenSolaris e Mac Os X (mentre prima non era compatibile con i mac).

    Inutile dire che la versione,essendo ancora in beta test,potrebbe presentare bug e non essere protetta quanto la versione finale quindi non è consigliata.

    Mini guida per per scaricare i file de eMule

    1) Installare su Windows il software Emule scaricabile al sito http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/emule/eMule0.48a-Installer2.exe

    2)Avviare Emule e fare click in alto a sinistra sul tasto connetti

    3) Fare click sul tasto “cerca” in alto e digitare nella casella “p-2005″, quindi nel metodo di ricerca indicare “Globale (Server)”. Premere infine sul pulsante Inizia

    4) Nella finestra in basso dovrebbe apparire una lista di nomi di file, pevalentemente compressi con WinZip. Ad esempio un file H501.24.P-2-5000.txt indica la lista n. 24 di Roma (ce ne sono 31 complessive a Roma, ogniuna contiene una parte di nominativi)

    5) Una volta scaricati i file sono nella directory ove avete installato emule, sotto-directory “incoming”. Esempio: c:\Programmi\eMule\Incoming\
