Stumblin' on Digi Snacks

This time I felt like going straight to Myspace music to see what they had to offer and I see RZA in the big featured artist block on the left hand side of the screen. Having liked the work he has done in the past and since he did all the music for the movie Ghost Dog, I decided to have a go at RZA again.

So I get to his page and I see "Digi Snacks" as the new album he is promoting. When I first saw the title I thought RZA, a.k.a. Bobby Digital, was endorsing some new Digidesign Pro Tools system add on. But I was wrong. Hmm. Anyways his Myspace page is pimped with a whole flash layout that includes a Chinese Wu Dan temple with a Wu Tang symbol at top and a golden double dragon sculpture with animated glowing red eyes. Then there is RZA next to it all striking a pose as if he has two imaginary pieces in his hand but, then again, it could be interpreted a simply a pose of power in which chi is being pumped out from his middle and pointer fingers. I actually found out later that it is a finger hand position of the 5%ers Nation of Gods and Earth. So he has a great silver geometric necklace (makes me think that he belongs to an ancient mystery school. actually the geometric 8 pointed shape is actually derived from the The Five Percenter Universal Flag ) on and real gorgeous cat eye gold ring. I wonder who created these pieces. On to the digi stracks...

Digi Snacks Tracks

"Digi Snacks Intro feat. Understanding" starts out nice. The drums is nice and the kind of funny esoteric soul chanting. I do not like this kid narrator though. It sounds like a some silly teen radio public service announcement somehow pointing out the dangers and benefits of this so called digital elixir and linking this elixir with drugs. This is my interpretation:

This so called digital elixir is equivalent to information that we research on the Internet digitally with computers. Now this information ,which is the truth, can help us inform people of society on whats really going on but, in knowing the truth, we are cursed. Knowing too much of what really goes on in the world is a burden to carry.

Then again, this could just be about actual physical drugs. For example. Smoking ganga opens up the minds eye to see a higher level of reality but, it also making you forget things, makes you lazy and destroying the lungs. Anyways, back to the music. At 0:38 the beat drops with some heavy horn sample and I could swear it sounds just like that semi famous Google video that was circulating around many Myspace profiles a while back illustrating the New World Order called:"illuminati minidocumentary". You should check that one out. Its also interesting when RZA talks about hanging out at the gallery with his wife and new born baby. A little insight on his personal life right there. He delivers all the lyrics in this mini track violently though. Its ok. I like when he says "Mr. Digital" and then a weird tweeked out sample drops. Next one....

"Long Time Coming" starts off emotionally charged with a vocoded vocal track. But I do not like it cause it makes me feel depressed. Makes me feel like I have been asleep all day and then wake up to see that it is dusk outside. I hate that feeling. Then it breaks into an amazing inspiring cosmic beat with this amazing complex arpeggio of this tine tone. This beat that drops is like the opposite of the intro. Its enlightened. "Long time coming" probably contains some of the most conscious lyrics of any of his tracks especially at 0:23 to 0:45. "Surpass space and time. 7 planes of energy, interlaced combined. 5 conscious stages, stand up courageous. Change your polarity , seek mental clarity". Eventually the intro vocoded vocal track merges with the beat balancing it out. I like the end when RZA says "life has just begun." It seems although things might be dark that he has a great deal of hope for himself and all of us that are going through hard times. Still I personally would not mind if this track would just be that enlightened beat and RZA's conscious lyric section only with out the melodic vocals. We need to be empowered, not depressed.

"You Can't Stop Me Now" is super. Starts out with RZA and others chanting "Round up..round up...round up". (side note: Made me think of Monsanto Corp' toxic pesticide called Round Up.)That sample was taken from the Temptations from their Psychedelic Soul album from the song "Message from a Black Man". I am pretty sure he tuned down the sample though, made it real laid it back. Solid straight forward beat. Inspectah Deck pumps big energy into. He got a more clean emcee style. His lyrics are not coded and more obvious. The song hook "No matter how hard you try you can't stop me now" is a good affirmation in a way but, it kind of implies a fight or competition. Oh well. That was life for RZA and the clan growing up. And that is another great part of this track is that you get the whole history of RZA in a nutshell. Very "edutaining".

I took a look at the video. I thought that the parts where Bobby Digital is sitting on the throne with the ladies around him would have made a better album cover (scroll to bottom of article to see the cover art). No? Also, as I watched the video I was able to understand the lyrics better somehow. Production wise it looks kind of cheap though. I would have done it completely different and at a higher quality and with out the cheesy animation. I could go on and on though about that though.

And also check out the behind the scenes, or making of, "You Can't Stop Me Now" and "Drama" from Koch Record's.

"Drama featuring Monk Theo" is the next track. Very strange but comforting vocals by Thea van Seijen. Pretty unique. I imagine like a 1920's female vocalist. Soothing and humorous. Interesting thing happens in this piece. A conversation between RZA and Monk. Very nicely done. The whole message behind this one is living in a constant state poverty and danger. RZA talking about the black on black issue. The ghetto death scene. "Is your neighbor hood a trap" "Everyday gets scarier" They are talking about getting out the ghetto and living a better life with out the worry of having to watch your back all the time. Great message. Makes the listener want to chose a better way to live. Maybe become a successful entrepreneur and leave the ghetto. Oh I also love the drum rolls and singular piano notes followed by the denser piano chords. A dope jazzy electric guitar solo escorts the track out to the conclusion. One of my favorites definitely.

"Try Ya Ya Ya" is the 4th. First thing you get hit with is the cartoony chorus of ladies singing "Try yai yai yai!!! High yai yai yai!!!". RZA starts out the rhymes here. "...I wire tap the feds. Brain wave manipulation.". Yeah don't let the TV and government manipulate your thoughts. "Time to set the nation straight". You can see the growing frustration with the US government in these lyrics. Monk actually sounds a bit like Vast Aire in this one. He has a very expressive voice, passionate. RZA talks about producers trying to copy him. It must be tough being copied all the time. Bobby also mentions sipping colloidial silver helping his cells out. Supposedly no disease can live in it's midst. I guess he was using it for something.

"Booby Trap" is pretty dark and laid back. I can see a public space where everyone is laid back on fat Persian over sized pillows and smoking opium. No alcohol in this one. The kick drum is very resonant as if it was more like a tom. I wonder what type of drum sample he used for that though. Dexter Wiggles vocals are amazing! I love his style. You might also know him as Dudley Perkins from Stones Throw records. He is one of the more well known conscious artists in hip hop. Check him out at his Myspace profile. RZA is aggressive yet whispery in his delivery. Like he is yelling to warn his mate like 100 feet away yet trying to whisper at the same time. The booby trap is a state of mind. You can be in a war zone but, still be free but only if the ego is in check.

"Straight Up The Block" produced by David Banner is like a strange fun house. The chanting in the beginning is straight Dirty South. "London to Japan! Mississippi to France!". A cartoonish Danny Elfman-esque haunting melody and female vocal floats through out most of the track. I love RZA's tuned down vocals. David definitely manipulated that. "Je M'appelle Bobby Digital". Funny. I also liked the dinky guitars part. Gave a certain cuteness to the track. Dope unique collaboration.

"Don't be afraid" starts off with a cartoon style Thermin synth solo that wobbles al over the place. This was inspired by or made for kids. It has a loving female vocalist singing "Don't be afraid to call my name". Who is she? I like her. Its probably a sample but not sure. RZA is sounding pretty serious and passionate in this one even though not all the things he rapping about is of a serious nature. At 1:56 RZA emceeing gets pretty melodic. Nice evolution. I like the funny little innocent twinkle riff that pops through out the track. Very child like :) What instrument is that? Sounds a bit like a steel drum. The track gets a raw crunchy kazoo like electric guitar solo part for the end. Is that you RZA playing that? I also love the vocoder robotic processed "Don't be afraid to call my name" that joins the solo. Nice!

"Money Don't Own Me" come next. I love this intro. Bluesy chill out with deep soul raw raspy vocal sample. I like the phased out guitar strum that pops like every measure. Dope bass. RZA is random with the emceeing this time. Its pretty cryptic. Not totally obvious as far as concept. More of a lyrical stream of a consciousness which is a nice change up. Some vocalist sings an amazing soulful bluesy vocal. I assume he is part of Stone Mecca but, I could be wrong. I love when he sings high pitched falsetto at 3:39. Also I took notice to Monk being super animated in this track even though there's not much conscious substance to his lyrics. Just a bunch of ego. Anyways overall a pretty ground breaking track. Another favorite.

"Creep" sounds pretty ominous cinematic in the beginning. Then a phased out female and male vocalist drops singing "Creep creep creep. Catch them while they sleep. Empty every shell from your clip. Knock them off their feet." Who was that? Anyways, the Black Knights are energized in this which is a contrast to the very laid back beat. They are so west coast sounding here. Speaking of the beat. So great! What stands out is the great minimal deep live bass line. I love when RZA fucks with the flanger on the beat at 1:22. The flanger or chorus hits so hard that they whole drum section gets decimated. It gets silenced. Nice! And those off beat click plock clock twock sounds are bonkers! What the hell is that instrument? The only part of this track I don't like is the lyrical stress on violence but, this is about sales no doubt. But maybe its about a way of life also. Its reality for many.

"No Regrets" is a stand out track. So clean. The beat is very similar to ambient lounge music. Pretty dam digital here! I think the vocals are sonically weak but, this was probably done on purpose. RZA mentions Milano Peppridge Farm cookies and iPod nano in this. Commercials! Ack! The vocals get funny in some parts. Like super emotional like he about to cry! But its done humorously I think. Dope drums at 1:58 that roll up culminating in a big vocal WOOP! at 2:06 and then follows RZA whispering the chorus. Nice synth work here too. I love the light chime twinkles that play at the beginning and end of this track. I also like the use of triangles every 2 measures too.

"RZA's Personal Cell Call" Ha! This is a funny commercial for Digi Snacks as well as encouragement for people to call his cell phone and leave a message. I assume he has an iPhone based off this picture I saw on the page. But is he going to return any of those calls? Sorry people. Don't get your hopes up.

"Up Again". The intro piano makes me feel like this is going to be one of those lame R & B tracks. I do like the little baby/toddler repeating the female spelling out "B-o-b-b-y-D-i-g-i-t-a-l". She or he sounds so cute. The women sounds real nice too. Like a real loving mother. Is that RZA's wife and baby? The track is up beat with popping pianos and a deep synth kick and snare. Is that a 808 there? Hmm. Over all this track is not that revolutionary. Pretty standard production compared to the rest of the track I heard. I do like the use of wind samples later in the track when Kinetic is talking about it being cold out. And El Debarge has vocal part on this track toward the end. BIZARRO! Good of RZA to bring him back....I think. Hmm. "Bobby, your love is so digital." says some female at the end. What the hell does she mean by that? :)

Album cover art, Digi Wha!?!?!

I searched a bit on the net and found the cover art by Gary Alford. LOL! It comes in 2 flavors.

Digi Clean...

...and Digi Dirty.

I really thought RZA would go for something more enlightened. Once again...Was this one for the money? I think probably. Most guys wants to be a king and have a harem. But look, it is pretty unprofessional looking. Like a teen boy's drawing of his dream life. Pretty sure this was an intentional marketing move. I guess that is the only reason why RZA's wife would let it fly but, one never truly knows unless they are on the inside.

Conclusion plus Extras

Digi Snacks is a pretty progressive album with some real gems. I really like what happens when RZA collaborates with other artists that bring something completely different to the table. In fact some of the best music comes about when two or more styles mix. I sincerely hope Bobby Digital continues to expand like he has in Digi Snacks.

Some future events... You can chat with Bobby at his Myspace page on Tuesday June 24th at 8:30pm in a chat window his programmers had set up a bit down the page. I wonder how productive that will be. Chat rooms can get messy quick especially when it comes to celebrity chat events. Another thing going on is a remix contest for "Drama" up at the contest's Imeem.com page but it doesn't seem like much activity is happening there. No info as of yet. Check out his tour dates on his Myspace. So if you have heard these new tracks already then what do you think of them? Which are your favorites? Let us know. Stay digi!

P.S. Check out RZA talking about Digi Snacks here in this video:

For three days, students Kid Wu, 22, and Stella Pan, 21, did not know they were living with a corpse.

They had detected a foul smell coming from their flatmate Jiang Ting's room.

But they dismissed the odour as they thought it was rotting food.

Unknown to them, Miss Jiang, 22, a Chinese national, had been dead for a few days.

It was not until 7 Jun that the gruesome discovery was made, after Mr Wu and Miss Pan had tried to contact Miss Jiang to get her to pay her share of the utilities bill.

Speaking to The New Paper in their rented three-room flat in Kallang, Mr Wu said: 'Although we have been flatmates for a few months, we seldom talk to each other, except when we need to pay the bills.

'Jiang Ting came across as an introvert. When she came home from classes, she went straight to her room and shut the door.

'She sometimes bought food and ate in her room. So when we detected the stench, we thought it was due to rotting food. After all, food decomposes easily in hot weather.' (story)

Well, the weather done gave all us New Yorkers the ol' bitch-slap this past week, as it got tired of hearing us complain about cold, rainy days. We've already seen 100 degree weather and it ain't even July yet! I won't complain because I fuckin' love summer. It's hard to live in New York in the winter. You can't let your mind go where it naturally tends to go, you know? Here's the famous telescope that stretches from Brooklyn to London, that we checked out on Saturday, the first above 90 degree day, before we boarded the water taxi for Manhattan...

Here's a bunch of stuff I noticed that stood out this week...

Radiohead fans are furious over EMI's Best Of release now that Radiohead are Indie again. Check out some of the hundreds of pissed-off reviews via this link to iTunes. Relax, people. I guess it's hard to lighten up when you listen to too much Radiohead (sorry, had to got there).

Rolling Stone talks about the gradual return of vinyl, as people fall back in love with its aesthetic. Reminder: who's been talking about vinyl's return since the onset of this here blog?

Animal Collective listen like Newms does. Check out the links to these AC mixes and playlists!

I think the hip-hop community could use some chess too, Wu. It'd be one thing that's not about bling and being the biggest asshole.

Luckily the little ma & pop store, Wal-Mart, has some people to get their back. Now if only the poor people behind the counter making $17k a year, trying to raise a family, could get someone to get their back. Pay more and support living wages, says I! But I'm sure that makes me a communist. Did I even mention how UN-rock & roll it is for AC/DC to do a Wal-Mart exclusive?!

Zhang Sanfeng

Vari maestri Taoisti

Wang Zongyue

Jiang Fa (1° generazione)

Xing Xihaui (2° generazione)

Zhang Chuchen (3° generazione)

Chen Jingbo (4° generazione)

Zhang Zhangyu (5° generazione)

Zhang Yan (6° generazione)

Chen Qingping (7° generazione)

Chinese Culture: Unit Two

256 B.C.E. – 580 C.E.

Qin Dynasty and the Unification of China. In 221 B.C.E., the Qin Dynasty began the unified Chinese Empire after overpowering all of the rivaling regions. The Qin dynasty brought with them their Legalist traditions and their respect towards those they conquered. I think that their understanding approach to their new domains is what helped them unify China with such ease.

Lu, a highly influential individual, increased the unity of China in many ways. One beneficial factor that he contributed in unifying China was the fact that anyone could attain nobility, depending on their own success. This provided a sense of equality between the common people and those who ruled them, as well as a huge motivator to be successful. Lu was one of these common people himself, but his success and entrepreneurship gained him a position as chancellor, regent, and other distinguished titles.

He also has a book compiled that would represent the unified philosophies of Qin. This was another huge unifier in that the book consisted of philosophies and thoughts of all the different schools of thought that were important at that time. That way all people would embrace Qin’s new book and have a connection with everyone else.

Then there was King Cheng, the “First Emperor” of the Qin, who reformed the structure of Chinese government and administration. He promoted the standardization of writing, measurements, and currency, as well as the development of roads and canals. The Qin law under the “First Emperor” was very rigorous with taxes, penalties, and executions. When the First Emperor finally died in 210 BCE, he had thousands of life-sized ceramic soldiers surround this tomb. He was very mistrusting and slightly paranoid about death because he had three different assassination attempts in his life.

The next emperor began his reign as the Second Emperor after his father, the First Emperor, died in 210 BCE. He had his brothers, as well as Li Si, executed. The Qin dynasty was losing its power and status, and there started to be rebellions. The Qin dynasty eventually disintegrated and in its place arose a new dynasty known as the “Han Dynasty.”

The first Emperor of the Han was Liu Bang (Emperor Gao), who took his leadership role in 202 BCE and continued until 195 BCE. He reformed the centralized government, instated a new location as the capitol: Chang’an, as well as reformed many of the laws, taxes, and from the sound of it, improved the overall quality of life for the people. The Han emperor was a powerful position, but he heavily relied on the advice of chancellors and other officials.

After Emperor Gao died, the widow of the next emperor took over and no one liked her. She was apparently very mean and harsh, and caused the people to decide that it was a lesson concerning “letting a woman take power”.

The next emperor sounded like a very beneficial individual. Emperor Wu began his rule in 141 BCE. He loved the arts and culture. He was interested in art, music, poetry, and Confucian teachings and texts. According to Ebrey, he was “unafraid of innovation” (47). He took on militaristic expansion and helped develop pecuniary structure and stability. Wu ruled for 54 successful years.

Wu also strongly endorsed Confucian teachings. He appointed officials based on their Confucian virtues, and spread the availability of Confucian schools and training. This high regard he had for Confucianism definitely affected this approach to governing the Han dynasty, and in my opinion, made him as successful as he was. He was not nearly as restricting and forceful as the previous dynasty. He believed in good, virtuous ways of life and encouraged others to study this philosophy and lifestyle. This instilled a natural sense of these values in those who adhered to it, and this provided them with more trust and freedom than the Legalist way of government, who required more supervision than the Confucian adherents did.

Throughout this time there existed nomadic clans that roamed the Northern Frontier. These groups included: the Eastern Hu, the Xiongnu, and the Yuezhi.

During the Qin dynasty, a Qin general, Meng Tian, took over the Xiongnu region in the northern Shanzi area. He was the first person to initiate the beginnings of the first Great Wall.

The chief of the Xiongnu was Touman, who was later killed by the command of his son, Maodun. Maodun later overpowered the Eastern Hu as well as the Yuezhi. He also united the tribes of the Gobi region.

Later, a new emperor succeeded in establishing the Xin Dynasty. He was a Confucian who was able to gain his position through his relative, Empress Wang. The Xin Dynasty did not last very long (only 9 CE – 23 CE), and the Later Han Dynasty soon took over.

During the Qin Dynasty, many writings were burned due to a command of the First Emperor. However, when the Han Dynasty came about, they had a library, developed paper, and were able to write many literary records, books, and teachings. During the early Han period, a new form of Taoism developed. It was known as “Huang-Lao Taoism” and Emperor Wu found it particularly agreeable. It involved worlds of gods, immortals, sacrifices, rituals, and stories.

After the commencement of the Han Dynasty, Confucianism once again became a common and highly regarded belief system. Scholars would study endlessly to master the meanings of all the teachings and try to learn and develop more understanding.

Writer and critic, Wang Chong, disagreed with the common beliefs that the time or day affected one’s luck. He was a practical person who saw the reasons behind consequences instead of being superstitious like much of society during the Han. Instead of just assuming any misfortune was caused by a decision or action made of an unlucky day, he realized that there was a real reason affecting the outcome.

During the Han Dynasty, a great historian named Sima Qian wrote a huge history called “Record of the Grand Historian.” His record included documents; cultural, political, and economic information; calendars, as well as many other accounts. He was given access to important documents, writings, and association with prominent people through his verdict to become a palace eunuch. He contributed immensely to initiating the history keeping of China.

The Han society consisted of different social statuses. There were the common farmers and the elite. The common farmers made agricultural advancements and developed farming equipment. The government was conscientious to provide for the farmers by reduced land taxes, provision during famines, helped them move to more open lands, etc. Despite this, many farmers were in debt and unable to keep their land.

The elite groups of the Han included those who were close to the throne (in-laws, eunuchs, relatives, etc), as well as merchants, manufacturers, government officials, the educated, and those who were simply wealthier than the commoners were. The elite relatives would often have lavish abodes and draft commoners into being their slaves or to work for them instead of public labors.

The merchants and manufacturers were also very well off. They had access to top quality clothing and food. They provided loans to other nobles, in order for the nobles to gain the power they wanted among society.

As the Han developed, they gained control of the Western trade routes, the Silk Road, and started realizing that there were many other developed civilizations around just like themselves. Until then, they had been relatively isolated and contained, and during the Han they began contacting and interacting with other civilizations. This outer contact greatly influenced changes that took place in the Chinese culture and society.

During this time, however, there began to be a political division within the Han, It evolved into the Three Kingdoms from 220-265 CE, and then the Western Jon Dynasty developed from 265-316 CE. There was a huge religions growth and development occurring at these times. Many Chinese people adopted a new religion, Buddhism, from India. This helped reform their beliefs concerning their present lives, as well as their afterlives. This religion became increasingly popular all across Asia. Daoism was also growing tremendously as well. They added new thoughts, beliefs, and it became more of a religious Daoism verses the philosophical Daoism of the past.

When Nicholas Tse and Cecilia Cheung married in 2006, I thought they are the perfect couple and when Cecilia gave birth to her son Lucas, the family seemed to be happy.

The rumours about Cecilia cheating on Nicholas seemed to be false...

..until January this year, when sexually explicit and nude photographs of Edison Chen with female celebreties from the Hongkong entertainment business were spread throughout the internet. First I thought, maybe just second class celebreties and maybe just faked or semi-nude pictures, but those pictures are shocking and the list of women involved are: Gillian Chung, Bobo Chan, Mandy Chen, Candace Chan, Rachel Ngan and Cecilia Cheung.

Nicholas took off the marriage ring and has to separate from Cecila for at least a year to be able to divorce her. I heard rumours he doubts paternity of his son Lucas and initiated a test. Cecilia not only cheated on him before the marriage, but also after she married and Nicholas made her promise to stay away from Edison.

Although Edison apologized in public for having caused grief for the involved women and their families and stepped away from the entertainment business, the damage he has brought is out of control.

Of course, those women are not innocent, as they like to claim they are, and stupid for having posed for those pictures in the first place. They not only brought dishonor for themself but also for their family. I don't think that Lucas Tse will have a good time when others tell him, his mum has a "shaving problem".
