Orissa police confirm Maoists killed Saraswati; thousands flee amid continued violence.
NEW DELHI, O

Orissa police confirm Maoists killed Saraswati; thousands flee amid continued violence.

NEW DELHI, October 10 (Compass Direct News) – After police in the eastern state of Orissa confirmed this week that Maoists killed Hindu nationalist leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, a Hindu extremist group circulated allegedly forged documents in an attempt to implicate a local church in the Aug. 23 murder.

The Hindu Jagaran Samukhya (Society for Revival of Hinduism or HJS) circulated documents saying the plan to kill Saraswati in Kandhamal district was made at a meeting at Bethikala Church on May 25 attended by 17 people following a briefing and command from religious leaders, the Press Trust of India news agency reported yesterday.

Local Christian leaders responded by saying they will file defamation charges.

“We will file both civil and criminal defamation cases against the person who made such allegations,” Father Joseph Kalathil from the Catholic Archbishop House in Bhubaneswar and the Rev. Fr. Prafulla Ku Sabhapati, president of the Bethikala Parish Council of Kandhamal, said in a statement. “Not only our signatures were forged, the contents of the documents were also fabricated.”

On Oct. 6 Orissa state police confirmed that Maoists killed Saraswati, a day after the chief of the Orissa unit of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist, Sabyasachi Panda, told NDTV 24X7 news that his organization was behind the murder.

The Maoists killed Saraswati because he was a key leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council or VHP), Panda told the channel. The VHP, he said, used non-tribal traders’ money to build VHP’s youth wing, Bajrang Dal, and ran a campaign against Christians, falsely accusing them of forced conversions and killing cows, considered holy by Hindus.

“This forced us to attack him,” Panda said. “We left two letters claiming responsibility for the murders. But the [Chief Minister Naveen] Patnaik government suppressed those letters. It is a BJP [Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party] government; they will support the VHP. The state government made it look like Christian groups were responsible for the attack. The Christian community in Orissa does not have any Maoist organization supporting them here.”

There were also reports, however, of the Orissa police having arrested three tribal Christians in connection with Saraswati’s murder. The Indian Express reported that the three had confessed their involvement.

A representative of the Christian Legal Association told Compass that according to sources, the police had tortured the three Christians to pressure them to confess a crime they did not commit.

After the assassination of Saraswati, Hindu extremist groups blamed local Christians and began attacks on them, their houses and their churches. The worst violence against Christians in modern India erupted in spite of the Orissa police and media stating on the day of the murder that suspected Maoists killed Saraswati.

According to the All India Christian Council, more than 60 people have been killed, more than 18,000 injured and around 4,500 houses and churches destroyed in the “retributive” violence. Two Christian women, including a nun, were also gang-raped. The violence, which later spread to at least 14 districts of Orissa, has left more than 50,000 people homeless.

Attacks Continue

Orissa’s Kandhamal district remained tense even 48 days after the violence began.

Yesterday about 15 houses were burned down by a mob in the Lansaripalli village in Kantamal Block of neighboring Boudh district, The Hindu reported. The attackers came from the Gochhapada area of Kandhamal district.

“Thursday’s was the third incident in Boudh district,” added the daily. “More than 100 houses were burnt down in two separate attacks in the past few days.”

On Wednesday (Oct. 8), a mob burned and looted at least 25 houses belonging to Christians in the Balligada village under Daringbadi police station in Kandhamal’s Nuagam Block, Father Ajay Singh of the Catholic Archdiocese of Bhubaneswar told Compass.

On Tuesday (Oct. 7), over five houses were torched in Jalespanga area under Phiringia police jurisdiction in Kandhamal. Another house was burned in the Sujeli village of G. Udayagiri Block the same day.

The Hindu also said the more than 16,000 Christians living in various relief camps were not returning to their villages, fearing attacks on them if they refused to convert to Hinduism.

Fr. Singh from the Bhubaneswar Archdiocese told Compass that over 12,000 Christians from various relief camps had moved out of Kandhamal to other districts and states, as they feared more attacks.

Supporting Violence

The president of the VHP, Ashok Singhal, told Zee News channel on Sunday (Oct. 5), “What Hindu organizations including the VHP, the Bajrang Dal and the RSS [Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, India’s chief Hindu nationalist group] are doing in Orissa is all legal and is the reaction of the murder of VHP leader Saraswati, who was like Jesus Christ to us.”

In an interview with The Week magazine (Oct. 5), Singhal said that Hindu youth are “ready to die and, if necessary, to kill. [Their] patience is ebbing.”

Singhal added that a “Hindu uprising” had begun, “and the political parties will have to rethink and reinvent themselves, for their own existence. If there is no arrangement for Hindus’ security, they’ll do it on their own. The Hindus will not die. If that self-defence is militancy, so be it … the Hindu never went around the world for suzerainty or to convert ... now they are here, undermining us. That causes anger. In fact many want to fight back this harvesting of Hindus.”

In addition, a leader of the Bajrang Dal in the southern state of Karnataka admitted to supporting recent attacks on churches while speaking to The Week magazine. “We supported those who attacked the churches, as it is a justified fight,” Bajrang Dal convenor Mahendra Kumar said.

The violence in Orissa spread to several other states, including Karnataka, where around 20 churches were destroyed and 20 Christians were attacked in the recent weeks.

As many political parties and rights groups have demanded a ban on the Bajrang Dal for attacking Christians and churches in Orissa and other states, the federal government ruled by the United Progressive Alliance has mandated the National Integration Council to give its recommendations, reported the Times of India today.

The Bajrang Dal, however, warned that any such move would have “grave consequences” for the government politically, saying there was “no legal ground” for such an action.

There are 897,861 Christians in Orissa, which has a population of 36.8 million.

Report from Compass Direct News

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve gotten back on the field, but damn it feels good to be

It's been a few weeks since I've gotten back on the field, but damn it feels good to be back. I love that feeling of running a "successful sarge." This weekend I noticed I have to show more "emotion" in set like Blue and I talked about.

On to the field report.

Meet up with Bolo

Thought we were going to game near his area, but he has a two set and he needs me to wing. The location is Gangnam and the HB he had was from the coffee shop yesterday. Their at some place having drinks near the station. I'm thinking damn my target I hope she's cute haha....

We show up to meet them and turns out my targets pretty cute :) HB 7 for me tall, nice legs, high boots, really fashionable, and a cute smile. I sit down next to my target and start running things. First off, she's 24, an art teacher, and lives by herself. LIVES BY HERSELF it's about damn time I meet a target that lives by herself. I have run TONS AND TONS of sets and they live with the rents, so this was a good thing....

Overview of the sarge

Using more emotion in set, and asking her passions. Her passions were her Religion and her work which is art. I made sure to seed during the sarge. She lives 20 minutes away from me, so I set up the timebridge for this Friday. She gave me some signals on that "hinting" she's only 20 minutes away....

During the hookah bounce, the kino was on. I made sure to read the palms. She's adventurous and likes to try new things. She's traveled overseas. Turns out the HB can cook too.... Yori halsu issoyo? Yup, you can come cook 4 me- I love bulgogi :)

The hookah arrives I try to shotgun it with her, but she wasn't keen. I do it anyway and she starts laughing then kinda hits me... She's pretty feisty. Bolo's target was mad cool and he did well in set. Neither time during the set, it was a crossover. It was just one of those sets that flowed well...

After hookah, I walked my target to her bus, along with Bolo and his target. This could have happened later, but Bolo and I left Rainbow and the bounce that was set up wasn't solid. Also, we could have done an Izakaya bounce as that's the only I saw, but my target was tired and wanted to go home. Next time, I need to look into noraebangs in the area to bounce my targets.

I help her with her bag to the bus stop. She had a huge purse and a big bag. I was a gentlemen here, but at a 5 dollar gratuity HB artist haha jk... She liked the cf comment tho....

Afterwards, she texts me within [b]5 minutes[/b] of seeing her off. Summarizing the text messages: she wants to meet, she had a good time, afraid of being on the bus, told her she'd be safe and to text me when she got home, she did and got a good night from her. Everything was on...

I'm gonna run text compliance in a few days before our meet then hopefully have it set up for this Friday.....

Thanks for Reading

Somebody asked me on the weekend, “what is your favourite game of all time?”
Good questi

Somebody asked me on the weekend, "what is your favourite game of all time?"

Good question.

My brother, his mate and I started the debate and trip down memory lane to try and discover what is the favourite game of all time.

Immediately will declared World of Warcraft ineligible because it was like saying crack is the best lifestyle choice.

So what did we come up with? Hmm some good flashbacks were there (including Flashback) but I can narrow it down to 5 (fine, 10)....for me anyway:

1 Civilization 2

The amount of hours wasted in front of the screen with the ever famous chant "just one more turn" launches this game as my all time favourite. Yes it was turn based but it was good. So good it spawned Alpha Centauri, a space version of Civ II and of course they are up to to Civilization 4 (which is my current offline addiction).

No matter how good or bad your were, there was always the rush to get the Great Library so you were the most advanced race or of course to get the Manhattan Project so you could nuke all in your way....oh the flashbacks...

2The Bard's Tale III: Thief of Faith

This game was my 1st addiction. I played so many hours of this game, over and over again. I have never seen so many sunrises since. It was so simple, so much text, so slow but so damn addictive. This was when I discover the love of the roleplaying genre. But as with most classic games, they redid it and destroyed it with The Bard's Tale on consoles. Oh the cruelty to put old time gamers like myself through the destruction of our past glories.

3 Ultima Online: the Second Age

My 1st taste of online gaming, my 1st mmorpg experience...the cause of my bank being drained by $20-30 every month by mmorpgs!

This game was so fresh to me gaming experience. The customization was unreal. You could have a character soley based on a profession like blacksmithing. You have player houses that had your own merchants! you had a choice of pvp or pve on the one server! Your skills were based on what you constantly did in game and not just " Oh I'm level 40, i will buy news skills that will proabably never ne used"! Oh the joy! And I still compare any and all mmos that I play to UO. I don't care if it looks terrible, the game play was the best online experience I have had. And it is still going! Ultima Online.

4 Alien Vs Predator 2

Just the sheer immersion of the game rates this game as one of my favourites of all time. The blood rush followed by emptying of your bowels when your motion tracker starts making noises, you just can't beat that sort of adrenaline rush. And to be honest, I mostly played the marines because of the rush, couldn't be bothered with the predator part and the alien storyline was fun but just not bowel emptying fun.

5 Neverwinter Nights

I was a huge fan of Baldur's Gate, not so with Icewind Dale, tinkered with Baldur's Gate 2 but fell in love with Neverwinter Nights

The sheer fact that you would spend hours to complete the game, only to start again with another character and encounter different events because the game based the encounters on what you played! Brilliant! And the customization of profiles, equipment and don't forget, you could build your own adventure then play online (for free) with mates as your own Game Master! Brilliant! Sheer droolage. And then they bring it to the consoles with Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance but surprise! It was freaking awesome! Specially 2 player!

Ok so that would be 5 of my favourite games of all time. It was not easy to decide, with some days I could easily slip some other games in there. Games of greatness that must be mentioned are:
6: Wing Commander II: Vengeance of the Kilrathi ('91)

7: Defender of the Crown ('86)

8: Alien Syndrome ('87)

9: Timesplitters ('00)

10: Goldeneye ('97)

So there you have it....my favourite games of all time. Of course there are some great games that I loved but top 10 does mean just 10.

So what do we think? and what are your most favourite games of all time?

This silly episode is making fun of a real person who ABBA song-stylings you can actually hear on the internet at the address provided at the end of the episode. What a weird thing for South Park to have found and made fun of. However, the topic does give the show an opportunity to mock one of its favorite topics: Hollywood.

By calling the agent-client structure stupid and wrong, they are criticizing the blood-sucking leeches that take the hard-earned money of talented people, often by doing nothing.

What do you think of the Hollywood agent system? Did you like this episode? Do you think Wing is talented?

So I've just landed into Hong Kong. And I'm at The Wing, the Cathay Pacific First Class lounge. You are NOT going to believe where I am writing this very post... here:

Yes in a BATH TUB. Can you sodding well believe it? I thought Terminal 5 rocked, but here thanks to those smart people at Cathay Pacific, you get a 'cabana' with bath, seperate shower, lounging area (with pebble filled lake/water features) sinks, potions and unctions and even Earl Grey served in your room.

I'm a little bit over fucking impressed to be honest.

So how was the flight I hear you ask? It was long. 5 hours to Vancouver, one hour on the ground and then 13 hours to Hong Kong. But I've discovered something about their business class seating. On the upper deck you get an extra 6 inches! It's true - it's like booking a queen and getting a king (hospitality wise).

So now I"m going to soak, shave, prepare. Put on my new Ralph Lauren Polo shirt (in Racing Green) and then kick back before the last leg to Bali.

Sweet joy!

Back in May, we told you about Swiss pilot Yves Rossy and his personal jet powered wing. It seems Mr. Rossy will now try to cross the English Channel with his invention. The flight was planned for Sept. 25 but had to be canceled due to poor weather. Yves will leap from a plane more than 2,500 meters off the ground, fire up his jets and try to make the 35-kilometer flight from Calais in France to Dover in England. If all goes well, the flight will take about 12 minutes. I'd like to officially ask Mr. Rossy for a review model for Slashdot.

Ok, I'm going to post the lyrics to my favorite song to date. It's called Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix

Well shes walking, through the clouds, with a circus mind, thats running round. Butterflies and zebras and movies, and fairy tales, thats all she thinks about. Riding with the wind...

When I'm sad, she comes to me.
With a thousand smiles, she gives to me.
It's all right, she said its all right, take anything you want from me. Anything. (Anything)

Fly on little wing.

(nananana) Little wing...

It was hard to find a set of lyrics that fit what I thought they sounded like. Some even missed a few lines, so I did most of it myself.

When you get a Maisto 1:18 Audi A8, #36143, you might not notice that the wing is adjustable. Here it is in the raised position.

When new, the hinge may be a little stiff so open the rear hatch and press down on the little lever with an old ballpoint pen to raise the wing. Move the wing up and down a few times and then close the hatch. Now you'll be able to raise the wing by putting your fingernail under it.

NEW DELHI, September 24 (Compass Direct News) – The unprecedented wave of anti-Christian attacks that began a month ago continued in the past week with more incidents of murder, rape and arson, mostly in the eastern state of Orissa and southern state of Karnataka. Two Christians were also found murdered in the northern state of Uttarakhand.

“The atmosphere in the Kandhamal district of Orissa is still volatile,” an attorney visiting Kandhamal with a team to provide legal aid to victims told Compass. “Yesterday afternoon, we were going to the Raikia area, but as we were about to reach there, we were informed that a mob had attacked a police station and the police had to open fire. We had to flee Kandhamal right away.”

According to The Indian Express, around 2,000 people, including women, surrounded the Raikia police station yesterday to demand the release of two fellow villagers from Masakadia village who had been arrested on charges of arson and rioting.

Security personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a federal agency, opened fire to prevent the mob from entering the police station. The security personnel resorted to fire after failing to control the mob with persuasion and the use of batons, added the daily. One person died and two were critically injured from the gunfire.

The attorney also said Hindu extremists had destroyed all communication links in Kandhamal, including mobile phone networks, and blocked some roads with trees and stones.

Rape, Murder, Arson in Orissa

Attacks on Christians continued in the Kandhamal district. While a young woman was reportedly gang-raped by unidentified rioters on Sunday night (Sept. 21), a man went missing and was allegedly killed on Friday (Sept. 19).

Father Ajay Singh of the Catholic Archdiocese of Bhubaneswar, Orissa’s capital, told Compass that a local Oriya-language newspaper, Dharitri, reported that a 20-year-old woman was raped by about 15 men in an area under Tikabali police jurisdiction in Kandhamal late on Sept. 21.

The victim, who was living in a relief camp and believed to be Christian, had gone back to her house to see her grandmother. A group of men stormed the house and took her to a nearby jungle and raped her, Singh said, adding that the police had confirmed the incident.

The Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that Iswar Digal, who had taken refuge at Ghumusar Udayagiri relief camp and was believed to be Christian, went missing after he went to meet his ailing father in Gatingia village on Friday (Sept. 19). Digal’s wife, Runima Digal, filed a police complaint stating that Hindu extremists killed her husband after he had gone to the village along with her to visit his father.

She said the extremists had warned them not to return to the village if they did not convert from Christianity to Hinduism. Police, however, have registered only a case of kidnapping, added PTI.

The news agency also reported that at least 10 houses, believed to be that of Christians, were burned in Gochhapada area on Saturday (Sept. 20). An Orissa state official told The Times of India, “It is difficult to guard all the remote areas. But we are trying our best.”

The violence in Kandhamal began following the assassination of a leader of the Hindu extremist Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council or VHP), Laxmanananda Saraswati, and four of his associates on Aug. 23. Although Maoists claimed responsibility for the murder, the VHP put the blame on local Christians, saying they killed him because he was resisting conversion of Hindus to Christianity.

According to the All India Christian Council (AICC), at least 14 districts witnessed violence with Kandhamal as the epicenter, and at least 50,000 people from 300 villages have been affected by the violence, with hundreds still hiding in forests. Some 4,000 houses and 115 churches have been burned or destroyed, and the AICC reported 45 Christians were confirmed dead with five others still missing.

Killing in Uttarakhand

Amid persistent tensions in various parts of the country following the violence in Orissa, two Catholics, including a woman, were found murdered on Monday (Sept. 22) in the Dehra Dun district of the northern state of Uttarakhand (formerly known as Uttaranchal).

A 56-year-old Catholic preacher, Sadhu Astey, and his disciple, identified only as Mercy, 32, were found strangled to death at their prayer center, called Samarpanalaya, in Chotta Rampur village near Herbertpur area in Vikasnagar Block, reported The Tribune.

Police said local residents grew suspicious when there was no movement at the center the past two days and informed officers. The center was found ransacked.

“We are investigating these murders to know whether it was done by dacoits [bandits] with an intention to loot, or there is something else,” Police Inspector Harish Verma told media. Dr. Sajan K. George of the Global Council of Indian Christians said he suspected Hindu extremists were behind the killing.

The Tribune said it was the fourth attack on Christians in the Dehra Dun district in the past few months.

“Sangh Parivar [family of Hindu nationalist groups led by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS] activists had attacked Christian missionaries on Aug. 15 when they were distributing their leaflets,” the daily reported. “They were brought to the police station and beaten up. Interestingly, instead of taking action against the attackers, the police detained five of the Christian leaders for nine hours.”

Christians were also attacked in the area on June 4 and June 22, it added.

Uttarakhand is ruled by the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Attacks in Karnataka, Kerala

Suspected Hindu extremists attacked at least three more churches in the southern state of Karnataka, where violence against Christians rose to new heights after tensions began in Orissa.

On Sunday (Sept. 21), two churches were vandalized in the state capital, Bangalore, and another church was attacked in the Kodagu district, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) from Bangalore.

In Bangalore, extremists desecrated the St. James Church in Mariammanapalya near Hebbal area and the Church of the Holy Name of Jesus in Rajarajeshwarinagar area, reported The Times of India. Police told the daily that they had detained seven people and suspended a constable for negligence in protecting the churches.

In Kodagu district, members of the Brethren’s Church in Nellihudikeri area found portions of the front glass facade of the church broken on Sunday morning, reported the daily. The vandalism occurred despite two constables guarding the church.

Karnataka police arrested the state convener of VHP youth wing Bajrang Dal, Mahendra Kumar, on Friday night (Sept. 19) in connection with the spate of attacks on churches and prayer halls in several parts of the state. Bajrang Dal extremists vandalized numerous churches and Christian institutions in various parts of Karnataka earlier this month.

On Monday (Sept. 22), anguished Catholic Archbishop of Bangalore the Rev. Dr. Bernard Moras told Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa that he was ready to “shed blood and give his life for Christ,” reported the Economic Times.

Yeddyurappa had called on the archbishop and senior state officials after an emergency cabinet meeting. Archbishop Moras “greeted the visitors with a grim face without the customary geniality,” the daily reported, “and blurted out his anguish: ‘I am deeply hurt and saddened. This is not a happy occasion to meet the head of the state.’”

The Karnataka chief minister assured the Christian minority community that security at churches and Christian institutions had been increased. He also claimed that the attacks on churches were part of a conspiracy to malign the BJP in Karnataka.

Yeddyurappa said police had arrested three persons including the son of a local Congress Party leader in connection with a violent incident in the Sagar area of Shimoga district, reported the Rediff News on Monday (Sept. 22). “Ravi, another person arrested in connection with the attack, is said to have instigated these youth to desecrate churches by promising to pay 1.5 million Indian rupees [US$32,800],” it reported.

Yeddyurappa had earlier blamed the anti-Christian violence in parts of the state on a booklet reportedly circulated by a Christian organization that allegedly hurt Hindu sentiments.

But a fact-finding team of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), which visited the violence-hit areas of Udupi, Mangalore and Bangalore in Karnataka last week, has indicted the BJP government for “being in league with the Hindu extremist groups. It has failed to check attacks on Christians and churches,” reported the Hindustan Times.

The NCM will submit the report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

According to The Times of India, two churches were attacked in neighboring Kerala state on Sunday (Sept. 21) near the international airport in Nedumbassery, close to Kochi city.

Some churches were attacked in Kerala last week also.

Ban on Extremism – or on Conversion

In the wake of the ongoing wave of anti-Christian attacks in various parts of India, the NCM is mulling recommending a ban on the Bajrang Dal.

The Hindustan Times said the NCM was working towards a unanimous decision seeking tough measures against the Bajrang Dal, as its involvement in “frequent attacks on the minorities and their places of worship across the country has been established beyond doubt.”

The former prime minister of India and chief of the Karnataka-based Janata Dal (Secular) party, H.D. Deve Gowda, also demanded a ban on the Bajrang Dal during a sit-in protest in Delhi yesterday. Several other political parties have also urged the federal government to ban the Bajrang Dal.

But a senior BJP leader, Venkaiah Naidu, termed conversion as the root cause of violence and social disturbances, saying a strong federal law to prevent religious conversion across the country would be brought if BJP regained power in the general elections expected to be held early next year, reported PTI on Sunday (Sept. 21).

The BJP leader also asked the Orissa state government to strictly implement the existing anti-conversion law in the state.

The VHP’s central governing body is likely to deliberate on ways to further intensify its campaign against religious conversions in Orissa’s Kandhamal district at its two-day “brain- storming session” in Delhi beginning tomorrow, The Statesman daily reported.

The Federation of Indian American Christian Organizations of North America (FIACONA) will hold a rally tomorrow at Lafayette Square in front of the White House in Washington, D.C. – the day Prime Minister Singh will meet with U.S. President George W. Bush – demanding an end to violence against Christians in India.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom has sent a letter to President Bush urging him to raise pressing concerns about religious freedom in India during his meeting with Prime Minister Singh.

Report from Compass Direct News

The Melbourne Storm have been criticised for months, even years, over the various tackling methods t

The Melbourne Storm have been criticised for months, even years, over the various tackling methods that they use. These methods have included the infamous grapple tackle, the chicken wing tackle and wrestling coaches to assist the Storm in tackling. With all of the controversy about the Storm and their tackling methods the Storm have largely ignored the warning signs and now are likely to suffer the consequences.

The Storm’s captain, Cameron Smith, tonight faces the NRL judiciary to answer for a grapple tackle in which he made ‘unnecessary contact with the head or neck’ of Sam Thaiday in last weekend’s elimination match with the Brisbane Broncos.

If found guilty, Smith faces a ban of two weeks, which would of course include the Grand Final should Melbourne defeat the Cronulla Sharks this weekend. If Melbourne is eliminated this weekend, the suspension would include the Australia v New Zealand World Cup opening match.

My tip would be that Cameron Smith will be suspended and will pay the consequences of ignoring the many warnings that have been sounded concerning the tackling methods of the Storm.

The video below, while not great, does show the tackle on Sam Thaiday:
