Last fall, I headed out the door to take a walk around the neighborhood and get a little exercise. Since you just never know what you might find, I grabbed my camera on the way out. It’s a good thing I did, as you can see. I spotted this tree across the street, and thought it looked unusual enough for closer inspection. I was amazed to find what looked like a Halloween mask of a face locked in a terrible scream. The face comes almost complete, with eyes, nose and even a right ear! When I showed this photo to my son, he said it reminded him of a painting by Edvard Munch entitled “The Scream”. I think he’s right, and perhaps the painter saw a relative of my shrieking tree and was inspired! Since then I have discovered a few more family members scattered about, and have included them in a gallery called Just For Fun. This image may also be found in the Black and White gallery at:

Well it's that time again folks. That's right it's October. This month is probably my favorite month of all time for many a reason. First of all, the weather could not be better. I just love that chill in the air. The October afternoons when the sunset makes the whole town orange is just flat out glorious. Of course the best part of October is Halloween. I just love it. It's just a day where I really feel like I can be a kid again. I may not go trick-or-treating or even wonder the town aimlessly on Mischief Night, but one still gets that wonderful feeling that On those nights, the fiends come out to dance in the moonlight.

The number one thing I enjoy doing in October is watching television shows or films that I find perfect for getting the Halloween juices flowing. The list is as follows. (feel free to comment/add to the list your personal favorites)

Halloween-Duh

The Rocky Horror Picture Show-Tim Curry in drag...I'm in

Hocus Pocus-Can't get enough of this

Casper-Bill Pullman should run for president

Select Episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark-Try "The Twisted Claw", or "The Midnight Ride"

Select Episodes of Pete & Pete- Try "Halloweenie" or any episode during Autumn for a real Jersey fall atmosphere

The Halloween Mask Episode of Goosebumbs-Horrifying

House of 1000 Corpses-Really great homage to old school horror films

Grindhouse presents Planet Terror-Machine gun legs and zombies...Yup

James Whale's Frankenstein-Boris Karloff at his best

The Blair Witch Project-Love it or hate it, the concept is still scary

Sleepy Hollow-Love the imagery

The Nightmare Before Christmas-Can be watched for Christmas too

Young Frankenstein-The name is Fronkensteen!

Scream-Such an original plot

Well that's my list. Yeah I know it's missing some classic horror movies like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street. But my favorite Halloween movies and TV episdoes are ones that take place on or around Halloween. I like to see the leaves changing colors, the moon turning red, and the characters actually dealing with the holiday of Halloween. It's my opinion. What's yours?

So by now everyone must know I am studying (reading?! :S) nursing at university. Well in today's lecture, it really hit home, how much informal carers are relied upon and don't get the recognition they do deserve, especially if they are children. Our lecturer, showed us a couple of videos which showed how carers live their lives from day to day.

This is one of the videos we watched, it moved me so much, in lecture, especially the powerful emotive capture of the background song (Scream by Zoegirl.) I suggest people check it out, its enlightening to think, that I thought I had life tough at the moment, but that is nothing compared to them.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=h9rPjqoZJQk&feature=related

To those who are carers, you have my utmost respect for what you have to do; each and every day.

Technically, it's still September, but I'm a HUGE Halloween fan. So, every Tuesday during the month of October, I will post a list of "Halloweeny" words.

Your mission is to print them out, cut the words into separate strips and drop in a bowl (or an empty skull!) Pick one word a day and write a short story or poem or scene or letter, based on that word. Here's an example:

Coven - create a story of a family of vampires (see the Twilight saga books for ideas!)

Hover- the ghost who hovered outside my window...

I found this shirt at a self-serve yard sale somewhere outside of Dodgeville, Wis. (See below) Then I loaded it up on my bike and pedaled it about 150 miles home. So anybody who buys this shirt better be damn appreciative of the extra weight I sacrificed to bring the awesomeness that is Skid Row.

This shirt -- which reads Skid Row: Oh Say Can You SCREAM -- reminds me of Joey Cirvogel (spelling?), who was an older, bigger, totally-metal neighbor kid growing up. He always wore a Skid Row shirt with a big skull on it, which freaked me out when I was like 5. It would probably freak me out today, too.

Special thanks to Greg for modeling. Best. T-shirt model. EVER.

$1 of the sale of each shirt is donated to the River Revitalization Foundation to restore urban river trails and waterways.

Forfatter: Asbjørn Bakke
Antall sider: 663

Step Brothers
[ 2 stars out of 4 ]

There were some funny parts in this movie, but there were also parts that dragged on and weren't as funny as it could have been. The backstory is interesting enough: two guys in their forties acting like a duo of eight-year-olds as they drive their newlywed parents crazy. Even though it's a bit creepy at times because of their actions that should make one question their psychology, there's some solid material that pops up once in a while that are laugh-out-loud funny. But more than half of the time, instead of showing us an organic comedy, it all feels too forced. Therefore, it made me wonder if the filmmakers had enough confidence with the material. If they doubt, I don't buy; and if I don't buy, why should I be invested in these characters? I like Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly but this film didn't do them justice. I want to see them in another comedy that's edgy, one of which the story doesn't feel forced, but with enough sentimentality that would make me want to care. This one isn't it. Unfortunately, I have to say skip this one unless one is a die-hard fan of the two lead actors.

Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film
[ 3 stars out of 4 ]

This is a really good documentary about the history of slasher films because it was able to cover so much territory in a span of about ninety-minutes. That said, it failed to reach its full potential for several reasons. First of all, it focused too much on movies from the 1980's, only quickly glossed over the 1990's, and barely mentioned the 2000's. Since this was released in 2006, I expected it to spend equal time discussing each decade because each one is as important as the other. Instead of talking about the special effects of smaller slasher films from the 1980's, it could've analyzed the best slasher pictures such as "Halloween," "A Nightmare on Elm Street," and "Scream." For instance, putting the violence and sexual connotations aside (because it's been talked about a million times before), they could've analyzed about how "Halloween" is more artistic than most horror pictures back then and even today, not just image-wise but also the use of music and suspense, especially with an extremely low budget. They could've delved into how "A Nightmare on Elm Street" is very different from typical slasher flicks because it's able to relate to psychology and Eastern cultures--the role of dreams and internalized emotions in all kinds of society--and how it was able to make the violence aspect secondary. They also could've picked apart "Scream"--its post-modern attitude, how it juggled comedy and horror so well, and why it is one of the best horror movies ever made. I was also looking forward to the interviewees talking about the infamous "Hostel" and "Saw" pictures, but they rushed through them in under ten seconds. The movie became so alive when they showed newspaper articles and film critics, such as Siskel and Ebert, disapprove of slasher movies because they often show women being tortured to the point where it's almost pornographic. In opposition, the documentary showed why the interviewees supported slasher pictures and their claims of such movies serving to empower women. I have my own opinions but it's nice to see opinions clash because both sides bring up very interesting points--that there's is no one "correct" side. This could've been a two and a half hour documentary and it could have been excellent. Instead, what I saw was a Slasher Movie 101 discussion so, unfortunately, I barely learned anything new.

Leatherheads
[ 3 stars out of 4 ]

I expected to like this movie and I wasn't disappointed. George Clooney, Renée Zellweger and John Krasinski are all likeable and brought something special to the picture. I don't know much about football or its history but I was entertained by this picture because it didn't take itself too seriously. In fact, the sport and its setting are always the background and the characters are always the focus. Although the three leads may not like each other all the time, there's no definite good or bad guy. Each of them are flawed but we learn to like them because of their quirkiness. I love the scenes between Clooney and Zellweger because they can talk each other off. Both of them exercise their subtle acting which reminds the audience why the two of them are considered great actors. Although Krasinski still reminds me of his role in "The Office," he more than carried his own here, especially the dramatic scenes which most often involves his character. I think with a bit more experience in other films, he can be an actor that can deliver the charm but still be engulfed in his character. I'm surprised with the number of negative (and lukewarm) reviews of this movie because I found it consistent and funny more than half of the time. Maybe their expectations were too high because of Clooney and Zellweger. I say this film isn't too shabby at all, but it could've been on another level if it had been a little more edgy when it comes to its undertones.

Spring in a small town, de Mu Fei (427)

High and low, de Akira Kurosawa (340)

El viaje de Chihiro, de Hayao Miyazaki (339)

Rashomon, de Akira Kurosawa (290)

Ran, de Akira Kurosawa (283)

Mi vecino Totoro, de Hayao Miyazaki (275)

Battle royale, de Kinji Fukasaku (235)

El castillo ambulante, de Hayao Miyazaki (230)

The killer, de John Woo (202)

Yojimbo, de Akira Kurosawa (95)

Tokyo story, de Yasujiro Ozu (67)

Old boy, de Park Chan Wook (64)

Shouts from the road
Who doesn’t like a good shout out? It’s a positive thing; “

Shouts from the road

Who doesn't like a good shout out? It's a positive thing; "a shout out to my homeboy Lance Armstrong gonna do the Grand Boucle again!". It's a compliment, a way to express your good feeling toward a friend. I'm here to say that these vocal missives can fall into the wrong hands; they can emanate from douchebags. Specifically, those ridiculously clever individuals who shout stuff to me as they whiz by in their cars/trucks/SUVs.

A few things are obvious. One, they haven't ridden a bike themselves since they got their license. Otherwise, they'd realize that there is no way I could ever understand what they say with the wind going past my ears. The wiser ones among them just scream or shriek.

Second, they shout whatever it is when they are passing me at speed, with no chance of me catching them. I've come close a few times at (somewhat) busy intersections, but never a catch. Often they're going in the opposite direction. I don't think I need to state the obvious cowardly nature here (but I just did). This is probably for the best because with the adrenaline rush caused by being startled in such a douchbaggy way would likely result in assault charges and a broken frame pump.

Also, it's a crime of opportunity. I doubt they leave their trailer thinking, "I'm going to create a loud noise as I pass some random cyclist. I need to run out for some smokes and a quart bottle of Bud." They see me and react instinctively. And yes, it is a crime. Details in "Expected Outcomes".

Techniques

Generally the manifestations of their behavior is often a shout (as mentioned above). Just as common is blowing the horn. Recently (last Tuesday I think) I heard a new one. This douchebag actually had an air horn at the ready. That's the first possibly premeditated one I've experienced. They had to have the horn in their hand waiting for someone to enter their field of view.

One exception stands. About two or three years ago, I got cat called by some young ladies in a convertible. Whether they thought I was hot or were being sarcastic is not an issue. I choose to believe they thought I was hot because, like the ride itself, it made me feel good.

Expected Outcomes

The result wanted by these horn-honking douchebags is a simple one. They want to startle me to a degree that I lose control of my bike and crash. Therein lies the crime; using a vehicle to cause injury to another person. A twisted schadenfreude to be sure. A mentally healty person only takes pleasure in the misfortunes of others when they are deserving of it - that person has caused them harm in some way. I am a benign presence in the places this happens. I avoid main roads whenever I can, and am keenly aware of the traffic situation around me; it becomes second nature when you ride long enough.

Silver Lining

The only positive here is that it reinforces the importance of good bike handling skills. Lately, the noise will startle me, but I don't jerk the bike off of it's path. The focus on proper technique pays off. I never lock my elbows; the flex allows you to absorb the natural flinch before it translates to the handlebars.

Conclusion

It would be naive of me to expect this to ever go away. Just one of these times I'd love to catch up to one of them at an intersection and see how brave they are when they can't just stomp on the gas to get away. Besides, frame pumps are cheap.

In letzter zeit geschehen komische dinge, voralldingem in meinen Träumen. Zwei Tage hintereinander

In letzter zeit geschehen komische dinge, voralldingem in meinen Träumen.

keep your eyes peeled
