The traditional way of managing sessions is on the server with the application container managing session keys/data. As a front end developer your job is simply to populate the session data as it is capatured on screen, the application container does the rest for you. The application container should offer different mechanisms for replicating session data across servers, thus providing session failover. It should also optimise the storage of the data itself, and manage the session keys with it's own policies for clearing out dead sessions.

The problem with this model is that it is simply not that easy. Some of the issues that need further consideration are: Memory optimisation, Long vs Short Running sessions, Server Redundancy:

When storing data in sessions, the data element is normally given a name, generally this is something meaningful that a developer can use to make code more readable. However these name themselve take up memory. Whilst this may not seem a huge issue with the amount of memory in servers these days, we'll see later in the post why optimising memory for sessions is necessary. So one improvment you can make is to implement hashing to reduce lengths of names used in code. Another technique would be to use compression for the actual session data especially for large free text fields.

Generally there are two types of sessions long running or short sessions. Typically internal applications such as call centres will have users that log-in in the morning use an application all day, and log-off at the end of the day. Such applications if not designed efficiently often do not release session data during the session, this can have the issue of builiding up huge memory requirements per user of the application. Prior to memory depletion, performance degradation will be the first issue as memory is swapped in/out of disk, followed by out of memory server crashes. Hence developers need to consider what memory should be held and when to release this memory. Short running sessions with mass users e.g. shopping sites, tend to have less per user storage requirements but many more users, creating a large memory requirement overall. In this scenario identifying dead sessions is paramount to reduce memory redundancy. Other optimisations include identifying session data that is used not per user but globally across all sessions, and caching one instance of that data rather than load it per user.

So it is for reasons like the above why client side session handling make so much sense, if only it was supported as standard by the browser rather than having to use hidden fields. Quite simply client side session management is a means of keeping data in the browser rather than on the server, therefore reducing the memory requirements and extra processing that an application container has. It would not only reduce the cost of the server you'd need it would also improve performance of the client application also, more so than the use of Ajax.

I can't think of any downsides to this approach whilst the upsides are huge. What do you think?

• I can't wait for High School Musical 3. My kids and I bond over HSM DVDs. At three years old, Chelsea practically knows the lyrics to Gabriella and Sharpey's songs--right down to "Everybody quieeeet!" HSM3, due in October 2008, will add to our bedtime repertoire. Zac Efron is cute too! Too bad he's a tad too old to become my son-in-law. And even if I was a cougar, he'd still be too young for me!
• Gossip Girl books. While waiting for the new season of Gossip Girl, I've been reading up on Cecily von Ziegesar's Gossip Girl novels. For those who belong to my generation, Gossip Girl books are the equivalent of Sweet Valley High and later, SVU. The TV series doesn't follow the books, though, but is more of the Beverly Hills 90210 sort: partner-swapping, brand name-dropping, and all.
• Safari and Firefox. A few months back, I converted to Mozilla Firefox when I discovered surfthechannel.com. (The website allowed me to preview TV shows before their airdates on local TV.) Firefox is faster and has fewer pop-ups. Recently, I've also been using Apple Safari for its neater interface. Like Firefox, it  does a better job in blocking pop-ups than Microsoft Internet Explorer. Although both Safari and Firefox take slightly longer than IE to initially load, downloading is faster once they're up and running. There's no way that I'm reverting to IE anytime soon.
• Wade's World. My 19-month old son, Wade, is rivaling his sister in degree of chattiness. Tonight, he said "grasshopper" perfectly, when he pointed to the picture in one of his books! He sings to Shrek and wants to be an ogre. He's not two yet, but we're trying to move up his toilet training if for no other reason than he's already outgrowing his XXL nappies/pull-ups. Any bigger, and he'll be using adult diapers. :) This morning, he was standing up in the bathroom trying to go no.1, and he ended up going no.2 instead. See, this is why we have nannies...
• Weight watching in Hollywood. Eva Longoria, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Love Hewitt... how dare they tip the scales at 120 instead of 100lbs! Result: more revenue for the tabloids and paparazzi. Don't they get it? I'd still rather have any of these women's bods over mine.
• Out of Avamigran. To migraine sufferers like me, this pill isn't just a pain-reliever. It's a lifesaver. Now why has it been out stock for the past month? I need an explanation as to why I have to go back to NSAIDS (and to vomiting) to be relieved of my pain, stat!
• Bye CSI. When spin-off CSI Miami started, Horatio Caine was not a real threat to Grissom dominance, simply because the flavor and ambience of the two shows were distinctly different. The demise of CSI started with the advent of CSI NY, whose ex-marine Mac Taylor presented a more interesting character than the Grissom of post Sara Sidle. But Gil Grissom leaving CSI? Now that, in itself, is a crime.
• Wanted. Of course, my husband wanted to watch this movie for Angelina Jolie, who looked totally anorexic in this flick. With a speaking part of about 50 words, she nonetheless exuded a powerful presence, which explained the camera frequently panning to her even in scenes where her only participation was to watch James McAvoy get beaten up. Between her and Brad Pitt being the man of the Brangelina household? No contest there.

See how happy this guy is with his dessert in front of him? Well, by golly, I'm just about that happy right now because I'm sitting at home on my Mac posting on my blog!! Oh, Chassy Cat, how smart are you!!?!! Once again, you have won my esteemed, "Hero Of The Day" award.

During their time in the area, they provided an amazing sighting that not many people have had the opportunity to see:

One evening this pride killed an adult buffalo bull along Molapo Road, at a spot approximately 50 metres from a water channel. With the kill being so close to the water's edge, it proved too tempting for nearby crocodiles, several of them looking very hungry and eagerly watching the lionesses as they were feeding. The following afternoon, soon after some guests had just arrived at the sighting, they witnessed one of the crocodiles walking up to the carcass. As the crocodile got close, one of the lionesses snarled a 'back off' at it. In response to the lioness, the crocodile then decided to go for one of the small cubs that out of curiosity walked closer to the unfolding event. This caused a war that nobody could have foreseen - all three lionesses turned around and attacked the crocodile, the crocodile in turn trying by all means to defend itself, but against such formidable predators like lions, his defensive skills were absolutely useless. The crocodile was bitten on the stomach and on some of his limbs and was believed to have been killed. The next morning the crocodile had disappeared and there was no sign of what could have happened with it, yet the lions were still lying around the remains of the buffalo carcass. This was a thrilling event indeed for all those who managed to see it. Thanks to guest Darin Goldman for the two photographs.

During June, the Skimmer Male has been looking very busy most of the time; not knowing whether to stay with the Tsaro Pride that was also hunting buffalo or with the Skimmer Pride that was feeding on the buffalo carcass. In order to give attention to both of his prides he had to work very hard and move between the two as much as he could, but in the end spent most of his time with the Tsaro Pride. He and Junior are still enemies: Junior has been seen many times running and hiding away from the Skimmer Male until recently when he decided that enough is enough. Coming across each other again one day, Junior resisted this time, jumping on top of the Skimmer Male, attacking him to the extent that the Skimmer male surrendered by turning around and running away. Since then, there has been some tension between the two of them. At the moment, Junior is still spending most of the time away from the rest of the pride, but very often has been seen hanging around not far from the Skimmer Male in the Tsaro territory.

On two occasions in June, one of the young males of the Skimmer Pride that has not been seen for almost two years was seen in the area on the northern side of the airstrip. He has been actively and successfully hunting buffalo on his own, and seen on two occasions on buffalo kills. The guides are looking forward to seeing what will happen if he and Junior meet up, since they are hanging around  in the same area - possibly they would even form a coalition.

We mentioned in the last report regarding the Tsaro Pride getting back together, and this has continued to happen in May and June as well. It is very interesting to see the Skimmer Male being very involved with the reuniting of the pride, but very unfortunate that it is happening because Junior and the juvenile female now often spend time away from the rest of the pride.

In May, two of the lionesses had cubs: three and two respectively. Both though have been seen with only one cub each. The guides believe that the rest of the cubs have unfortunately died. In the last two months, the pride has been seen hunting buffalo as usual several times, although there have been occasions when some individual females, especially those lactating, have been seen hunting warthog as well. The remaining Duba Boy has not been seen for quite a long time as well.

During this period the two Duba Boys gave the Skimmer Male and the Tsaro Pride a wide berth, especially the injured male who in fact became very elusive. The fact that he did not associate with the pride and did not hunt for himself as a result of his injuries caused a rapid decline in condition and deterioration in health. He completely lost the healthy and intimidating physique he had became known for.

On the 28th of December, this male was seen by the guides out on game drive. Most of the guides and guests, including multi-repeat guest Iva Spitzer, agreed that it was likely that if he did not feed during the night that he would breathe his last. This turned out to be true.

James was on game drive on the morning of the 29th when he saw some vultures soaring along Letlalo Road. As usual he investigated and was devastated to find the late Duba Boy. It is fitting that he was killed by the buffalos he had hunted for most of his adult life. The area looked like a battle field. The bush was trashed, the grass was trampled and the dead Duba Boy had a gash from the chest down to the belly from the horn of his final adversary.

The Duba Boys have been in the area since the year 1996, when Duba Plains opened. They were the sons to a male lion called 'Stick', who was dominant in the area at that time. He was then chased out of his territory by another male called 'Squinty' towards the end of 1996. Squinty became dominant in the area up until 1999 when the two Duba Boys proved mature enough for dominancy and usurped his position, ruling over this area since this time. It remains to be seen how long the remaining brother will be able to hold onto the prize?

Tutto questo richiede che il pacchetto di software fornito insieme al sistema operativo funzioni adeguatamente. Fino ad oggi tutto è filato liscio nel mio MacBook.

Mi sono visto costretto ad aprire una asta su eBay per vendere il mio vecchio portatile non funzionante, sul quale ho fatto anche diversi tentativi di recupero (che non sono andati a buon fine).

Creare un'asta su eBay utilizzando Safari è stato semplicemente impossibile. I controlli Javascript spesso non funzionavano e la visualizzazione dell'intero portale è semplicemente pessima, confronto all'utilizzo dello stesso sito con un browser differente.

Per completezza, vi dico che ho installato Camino (si integra molto meglio dell'originale Firefox nel mio ambiente MAc OS X), il quale non presenta problemi di visualizzazioni per eBay (e che attualmente utilizzo soltanto per accedere a quel particolare sito).

Ora, qualcuno di voi ha avuto un problema di questo genere? Come lo avete risolto?

Personalmente mi sembra strano trovare un problema di questo genere per diversi motivi. Per cominciare, se il problema sta dalla parte dello sviluppo di Safari, è praticamente impossibile che durante il processo di sviluppo non si sia posta l'attenzione su un portale così importante, come eBay. D'altro canto credo che anche lo sviluppo del portale di eBay abbia posto la sua attenzione sui browser più utiizzati, e non credo che Safari possa passare in secondo piano.

Possibile che si sia arrivati ad una situazione di questo genere?

This thing looks great... But it just doesn't work well. Not well enough to validate its price tag. I know there have been some technical problems at startup. But now that the service is up and running, I am having some major issues with the webbased interface:

• Editing contacts in Apple's own Safari (in Windows) is a nightmare. The dropdown for adding new fields to a contact doesn't react. This seems to work in Firefox though...
• When I add a birthdate to a contact and switch to calender view, I *only* see the birthday. Switching back to my contact, the changes I made have not been saved.
• Outlook syncing doesn't work.

And it's SLOOOW...

I really hope these are just growing pains. This thing could be the holy grail for syncgeeks like me!

The problem is to do with auto-fill - a feature of OS X which is another of those features that, when you first come across it, reminds you why you love Mac - but which you never bother to figure out how to use or adjust and so are completely in the dark about when it behaves unexpectedly.

Auto-fill remembers information like your postal address, mobile number and email address so that, when you fill in a form on, say, amazon.co.uk, all you have to do to automatically enter all your details is hold down Command + Shift + A and Safari will securely paste your info into the form fields for you.

The e-mail address part was the sticking point for me, because having recently done a complete erase re-install of Leopard, I was at a complete loss as to how OS X had managed to retain any of my personal information - when I was registering an install of Photoshop and the "click here" box already 'knew' my email address (which was actually incorrect).

I hunted high and low on every Mac help forum there is and no one seemed to have encountered the problem before - it was as if I was the only Mac user in the world who didn't know how to change the default system wide e-mail address.

Here's how it's done..

Open Safari and open preferences.
Click 'AutoFill' and next to 'Using info from my Address book card', click 'Edit'.
Your own V-card will open in Address book.
Change your details and quit Address book.

Sounds simple, right? And it is - and I feel really dumb for not knowing already how it's done - but hey - it's just reminder that even we hardened Mac heads sometimes need a refresher on the basics.

Currently I have the drop down menu working in IE and Safari, I ended up using some CSS "hacking" codes, but Firefox is reading the hack for Safari. Let me explain... With drop down menus, you roll over the menu and another menu drops down, right below the "hierarchy menu," giving you more options to choose from, right? Well, it's been doing that in IE and Firefox, but in Safari, the drop down part of the menu is above and to the left of the "hierarchy menu," something I deem as a problem.

Now it looks fine in IE and Safari, but in Firefox the menu is bumped down and to the right of the "hierarchy menu." Now I'm looking for a way to hack Firefox and "hide" that part from it; I did find something (positon*: fixed !important), but that hid it also from Safari, taking me right back to where I started.

Well, the problem has just got worse. The new 3G iPhone invites you to download lots of fascinating apps from the iTunes app store. This will place yet further demands on the iPhone's RAM so you would have thought Apple would have taken the opportunity of the upgrade to boost it by the odd few hundred megabytes.

Well Apple are being rather coy about the specifications so it is hard to be sure, but it does look like the RAM has not been beefed up.

The release of the 3G iPhone has coincided with a big increase in hits to this website (particularly this post) from iPhone users (or maybe potential buyers) trying to find out about the amount of RAM on the iPhone or because they are encountering Safari crashes or other similar problems. It is probably too early to say but I suspect Apple have just exacerbated a problem they should have been acting to fix.

Guess what,
I'm using another new browser.
This browser name Safari,
which is a Apple Mac default browser.
What I have to tell you is,
this is really the fastest browser I ever use until now!
This is even faster than any browser I use before, IE, Firefox, Opera or Netscape.
Almost every page just take 1 second to load!

Until now, finally I know that sometime it's not the Streamyx fault,
all the slow browsing not always cause by Streamyx,
but cause by those slow browser.

The Safari is a must try browser.
Until you try it, you will know what call real instant internet.
I'm so happy that finally I found some real browser I can replace Opera and Firefox,
which now having conflict with the Microsoft system.
