Asadar, noul an (scolar) a inceput cum trebuie. Daca asta inseamna ca asa o sa o tinem tot anul, atunci sa ne traiasca si la mai mare! :D

P.S.: Astia sunt ASHA live, mai demult putin:

Uptaded- 5.10- In Herastrau, sambata asta, a fost superb!

For today’s family outing, we took our first trip to Green Lake in Seattle. We have wanted to

For today's family outing, we took our first trip to Green Lake in Seattle. We have wanted to visit the lake for a long time now, but have only gotten as far as coffee at Zoka, and our favorite (and only) organic doughnut shop, Mighty O. It was a gorgeous Fall day, so we decided to walk the whole 2.8 mile track. There were lots of dogs, ducks, and babes-in-strollers, so Abby had a blast . . . despite her recent decision to boycott napping.

Josh and Abby enjoyed feeding the ducks (or "duckies"). . .

. . . then they stopped (oops).

We weren't surprised to find one of these on the trail. Smart vendor . . .

We pulled over for a potty and picture break. I was overjoyed to find the the public restrooms on the trail had diaper changing tables (we didn't need them at the time, but I'm storing that one away for the future).

After our brisk walk around the lake, we needed to work off whatever health benefits we had just gained, and headed to . . .

Dick's is a Seattle favorite (which many compare to In-N-Out . . . no comparison, sorry). There is no seating anywhere, so we had a little picnic.

Till the next family day . . .

This was a treat for a couple of reasons. One, for someone who lives in the city of Anderson, the nearly 20 mile round-trip seems a bit much for take-out, and two, they're only open one day each week, so that makes it somewhat of a rare commodity.

This is the front view of an old building that caught my attention as I was driving back to Anderson from doing AIM outreach in Starr. One of the back windows winked at me (literally) as I drove by, calling out for me to turn around and investigate. The windows are amazing. You can see in the photo how the variations in the old glass might appear to wink in the sunlight. I couldn't get to the back to get a good shot, but the front revealed the bulding to be an old post office with lots of character and amazing details and brickwork. I'm afraid that I don't know what the current post office looks like, but how can it compare to this one? Here's an extra shot of the brickwork.

In my quest to find wintertime activities for me and Abby, we visited The Little Gym just to see what their infant and parent class was like. We were originally scheduled to check it out last week, but Abby was not feeling too good. This week, I'm feeling pretty crummy, but I decided to keep my appointment since we have both been a little stir crazy in the house (yup, its cold and rainy outside). As sick as I am feeling, our trip was well worth it.

As is my ritual, I let Abby know what the plan was for the day, and thought we had an agreement . . . she would take a great morning nap, and I would take her to a fun new place. Well, of course, she didn't hold up her end of the bargain. So, literally one minute after she fell asleep in her carseat, we arrived at our destination. But it didn't matter. While devoid of sleep, she had the time of her life.

We showed up just after class had begun, and sat down in a circle of a dozen or so moms and/or dads and their little 10-18 month olds. The first portion of the class was to be devoted to parent/baby interaction. The babies (or "Birds") were to stay with their parent, and play games with them. (Find their toes, clap their hands, let mommy or daddy lift them high in the sky, etc.) Well, not 30 seconds after we sat on the mat, my little socialite was halfway across the circle, talking to another baby, and trying to sit in someone else's lap. Each time I tried to bring her back to me, she would head off again, talking and army crawling to the next person.

When I finally did lasso her back to me, the instructor gave us directions on how to do this one exercise where were were to rock onto our back while baby was on our tummies. In my haste (and already not feeling good) I rocked back and . . . crack. I popped something, I think my hip, out of place and couldn't get back up. Abby saw this as her chance to get away from her un-cool mom and crawled away . . . without looking back. After I recovered from that, the instructor had to finish the routine with Abby cause I was too out of shape to exercise with my baby. I'm not even fit enough to work out at The Little Gym. P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C.

So, after that embarrassing portion, the kids were allowed to roam the gym. Abby was all over the parallel bars apparatus, and loved crawling all over the cushy floor. She had no interest in hanging on the bar or being on the balance beam, but just wanted to "walkie" all over the room. It was pretty cute.

The last portion of the morning, we all gathered together for some time to play with balls, bubbles, and a parachute. If I were to guess, this was Abby's favorite part. All the babies sat on the parachute, and played with these great, grip-able balls, while music was playing. Abby loves her music, and her Daddy taught her how to throw, so she was dancing and throwing balls all over the place. Then, the teacher brought out the bubbles. Of course, this was a hit with all the Birds. Abby was most interested in the bubbles that fell on the floor, so she went around saying "bubbo" and popping all of the lingering floor bubbles. What she didn't know was that one landed on her head, and stayed there for a good five minutes. That, and seeing the joy smeared across her little face, made Mommy forget about her injured pelvis . . . and ego.

This weekend was draining. I've been a little sick (which, along with an oversleeping friend of mine...looking at YOU, Fernie) kept me from going to Jet Rag on Sunday. Bluh. Even still, with this congestion, I was walking around for most of Saturday, enjoying the still-hot weather, grocery shopping, and thrifting ever so slightly. Nothing major, I assure you. I did, however, manage to finally get my car out of the shop (*crossing fingers it doesn't break again*) AND I got to go to one of my favorite taco stands. If you've never been to Yuca's Tacos in Los Feliz, you really should try it; the pibil taco comes with my highest recommendations. And as a word of caution, they don't have posted hours and I'm convinced they close whenever they run out of food. If you go, go in the early afternoon. And bring cash.

I finally brought Layla down to Borders at Wheelock Place yesterday afternoon, to check out the fortnightly storytelling session my neighbour A has been raving about. It's run by Julia Gabriel, and it takes place on alternate Saturdays at 4pm. Oh, and best thing -- it's free! (Details here.)

First thing I noticed when we got there -- the storyteller was loud. We'd attended another free song-and-story session at Tanglin Mall (sponsored by The Better Toy Store), and I could barely hear what was going on, so I really appreciated this. Even in her sleepiness (she'd missed her nap), Layla perked up when she spotted her little friend Caitlin and got up to dance soon after.

For parents who run their own playgroups, I would highly recommend checking out a session to get tips. On a scale of 1-10 for energy and animation, this duo was a 10, and even at this level, not all kids were engaged. So it's not hard to imagine why any regular parent trying to tell a story in a normal way would have trouble capturing a young audience.

Here's what they did that I liked:
- They started with a song-and-movement segment to get the kids going. The songs led into one another, e.g. a song about disappearing sausages (i.e. no more food left) would lead to "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" (because we now had to catch fish to eat).
- The story featured a "tiny tiger," so just before they began, they went through the Alphabet Song and told kids to look out for the letter "T," and emphasised the letter sound.
- The story was sung with simple chords on guitar as backing music. The guitarist also created special sound effects to support the story.
- When the whole story had been read, the storyteller did a quick recap of the main actions, and the song that followed required the kids to perform these actions (e.g. kicking the leaves aside).

Layla's friend Heng Yi was also there -- HY is almost a year older, and it warmed my heart to see her firmly leading Layla to the front so they could get their tiger stickers together.

I would love to make this a regular outing for us; it's really unfortunate that it clashes with Layla's nap time!

In my effort to get out of the home more, I've joined some of the Artful Lil' Hands mommies on their excursions and activities. Last week, Layla and I headed to the famous West Coast Park adventure playground (read about it here and here), and we celebrated the final day of the lantern fest with homemade pomelo lanterns courtesy of my neighbour A's mom.

Today, we returned to The Animal Resort after a fun visit earlier this year. I tried (a bit harder than I normally would) to learn and remember some animal names in this second trip. And this time, Layla started singing "Five Little Ducks" when she spotted some geese. If you're like me and don't know how to explain animal differences or even tell them apart, this link might be helpful:

Ducks and Geese: Differences

As the kids were feeding the goats, one of the farm ladies came up to warn us against letting the kids get too close to the Cassowary (or Kasuari in Malay). Back home, I had a tough time googling for the correct spelling, and when I finally got it right, was surprised to read that they can be pretty aggressive, and can kill with the "slashing blows" of their feet.

There were still animals we couldn't positively ID in this trip; I should make it a point to ask the farm owners in future! But thanks to my mommy companions, I did get a few names (e.g. crown cranes) down, and have already made some animal flashcards for Layla to remember our trip by.

Was also searching for kid-friendly animal diagrams and fact sheets, and EnchantedLearning.com is the most useful site that's turned up for me so far. Now, I just have to think of a good way to put everything together!

This last Saturday, we spent our first whole day away from Abby as we trekked over the river and through the woods to a wedding. Josh wore a couple hats for the event, but I got to just be a guest, and that was wonderful.

The Scenery...

Did I mention the wedding was on Vashon Island, a freeway trip and a ferry ride away from Abby? Here's Brenda and I heading to the island.

I cannot imagine a more beautiful place for a Washington wedding . . . amongst apple trees, overlooking the Sound, with an amazing view of the ferries and Mt. Rainier.

The Ceremony...

Josh and Luke played as guests arrived, and strummed the Canon in D as the bride walked down the aisle.

Dean married the couple with a sweet and simple ceremony.

Crystal and Jonathan were as happy as I've ever seen them. They were truly celebrating their day.

The Reception...

We enjoyed an incredible Guamanian cuisine catered by the groom's parents, including a whole pig and lots, and lots of dessert. And the cake was baked and decorated with love by our dear friend, Barb (who was also responsible for Abby's birthday cakes).

Josh (and his trusty collection of incredibly random iTunes programming) provided the music for the reception.

Here's me and Ken, Electric Sliding all over the place (dang it...you think you look so cool, then you see yourself in a picture).

It was a wonderful day, and a great first "Mommy and Daddy Day Out". (And thank you, again, Dianne for the pictures...we owe you a new camera by now :-) .

[caption id="attachment_55" align="alignright" width="320" caption="a hot tub at Watercourse Way in Palo Alto, CA"][/caption]

If you don't have a hot tub at home, or maybe you would like to try out something new, a soak in a hot pool is never a bad idea. Okay, maybe it would be a bad idea if you have been drinking heavily and have a live electrical cord wrapped around your waist- but for everyone else this idea is a fun and relaxing experience. In fact, the past two times that I have visited a local bathhouse/spa, I have come away feeling so refreshed and soothed that I was asking myself why I don't do this more often. But before I get carried away extolling the virtues of a great soak, I think the first question one would have to ask is if there is even any such facility in your vicinity? Here is a website that can help you find a spa of some sort in any area: http://www.spafinder.com/index.jsp.

At this point I think it is important to mention that in this article I am really focusing on man-made facilities that charge an entrance or usage fee and are typically very professional in terms of design and function. Most of these facilities are operated as small, independent businesses and offer a variety of services in addition to hot pools such as massages and facials. Having visited a wide variety of hot pools in places as diverse as Vietnam, New Zealand, and the U.S., I can report that prices, services offered, and facilities vary tremendously, but rarely do I find the experience to be a major disappointment. On the contrary, my experiences have been so good that I often seek out hot pools both at home and while traveling. But like any soak seeker, I have a couple of favorite spots that I will profile below.

Watercourse Way (Palo Alto, CA)

Watercourse Way is a remarkable bathhouse/spa which is unpretentiously upscale and quietly elegant. Located in downtown Palo Alto near Stanford University, you might not ever find this place if you searched randomly, although the bamboo landscaping does offer a hint of what is inside. Indeed, the architecture and landscape are decidedly Zen Buddhist, and a step inside is a calming experience. A variety of services are available at Watercourse Way, such as skin care and massage, but my personal interest is with the nine soaking tubs housed in nine private rooms. Although each room features a hot pool, each room also has its own character and additional amenities. For example, some rooms have a steam room, others have a sauna. Some rooms have a cold dip pool which I love; after getting too hot in the hot pool, a cold dip feels invigorating. All the rooms have a shower and a mattress/bed area with fresh sheets for lying down and doing you know what, so romance it up! Cleanliness is never an issue, Watercourse Way is always spotless and the tubs feel like you are the first person to soak in them. In fact, I saw the water automatically drain out of the cold dip pool at the end of my session the last time I was there!

I think the only real drawback to Watercourse Way is that the prices are a bit steep for people not making a huge salary. Keep in mind that Palo Alto is a very upscale community where house prices start around 1 million and climb aggressively from that point, so prices for most other things are high as well. Anyhow, expect to pay in the range of $18-$28 per person for an hour in one of the hot pool rooms at Watercourse Way. Discounts are available by purchasing a $100 credit, so if you and your significant other plan to go at least twice, this makes a lot of sense. Reservations in advance are also necessary on any day of the week. Here is a link to pricing at Watercourse Way. In any case, I highly recommend the experience of going there at least once in your life, especially if you are looking for something elegant and possibly intimate.

Big Bend Hot Springs (northern California)

Very different from Watercourse Way, Big Bend hot springs is remotely located in the far north of California and is an outdoor experience. Camping is available, or if you prefer you may stay in a cabin- considering the remote location, an overnight stay is perhaps necessary. The hot pools are just above a scenic river, and in my experience it is not hard to find a time when the pools are vacant. Clothing may not be worn by all soakers, but I would say this is the exception rather than the rule. In fact, it is difficult to make any conclusions about this wonderful spot because recently the land changed ownership and the new owners are conducting renovations. Unfortunately, the site is currently closed during the construction, but I am eagerly awaiting the new facilities. Assuming that things will be changing for the better, this spot will be well worth seeking out, perhaps as a weekend adventure.

Fernland Spa Mineral Hot Pools (Tauranga, New Zealand)

With the success of the Lord of the Ring movies and plenty of great press, more and more travelers are selecting New Zealand as their vacation destination. One of the great things about visiting a geothermally active country such as New Zealand is the abundance of hot mineral pools. Although the town of Rotorua snags most of the tourists who pass through the North Island of New Zealand, I highly recommend a detour to the coastal town of Tauranga, just 45 minutes away from Rotorua by car. There are a number of hot pools to visit in and around Tauranga, but my favorite is Fernland (I believe that I have visited all of the public pools in this area). There are two things about Fernland that I think make it a cut above the rest. First of all, the unique hot mineral water here seems to have a therapeutic effect, leaving your skin feeling soft and silky after a good soak. Secondly, the native bush (forest vegetation) that surrounds the property makes for fantastic landscaping. At night, you can even see the bright blue pinpoints of light created by glowworms in the bush. Indeed, glowworms are one of many attractions that tourists will find amazing in New Zealand. So if you are not in too much of a hurry to get to the South Island of New Zealand where the big mountains and fjords reside, take some time to visit some hot pools on the North Island of New Zealand. And while I am at it, I might as well work in a plug for my former employers in Tauranga, Blue Ocean Charters, a family run business offering ocean fishing trips, excursions to nearby islands, and possibly some scuba diving. After all, what better way to end a day of fishing in the gorgeous Bay of Plenty than with a soak in a hot mineral pool?

Today is Josh's birthday. So far, the day has been wonderful. Josh is wearing his gift in this first picture . . . just in time for football season. Then we headed out to visit Gasworks Park for the first time. It's a beautiful landmark, with a beautiful view of what is becoming our favorite city. After a picnic in the park, lots of "walk-walking", and some "bike" riding, we headed to Ballard for a birthday treat for Josh (and Erin and Abby) at Cupcake Royale, where we ran into our good friends, Ken and Brenda. Tonight? Monday Night Football for my man. Happy Birthday Honey!!!

I had to wear a dress yesterday because I had three large mosquito bites on my legs. Very uncool. Lucky for me, it was hot enough that I didn't feel uncomfortable. Dresses during the day weird me out sometimes.

Dress & Necklace: Forever 21 + Sweater: H&M + Shoes: Urban Outfitters

Later that day, some of my office cohorts and I went to eat over at LaLa's on Melrose. Good Argentine good, carafes of sangria, and loud people made for a good time. A really good time.

I had the chicken al champignons. It was good. Really good.

The flan there is excellent. We ate it before I could get a decent picture - LOL. I'm not sure what Sarah is trying to accomplish behind me, but whatever it is, I think she managed to pull it off.

"This ocean- front eatery is a favorite with locals and tourists. Woodwork, rattan chairs and nautical paraphernalia make it feel like you stepped aboard a ship. The service is friendly yet professional. Sit indoors in air conditioning or on the porch where fans, pleasant sea breezes and great views prevail. Tip: If you sit on a bench on the porch, it gets to feeling hard quite fast."

"Sea Watch has always been a dependable spot to eat in an amazing location. And nothing about that has changed."

The landmark Trust has just completed the task of of renovating the Dorset folly known as Clavell Tower which overlooks pretty Kimmeridge Bay and the Purbeck hills. The work which is reputed to cost more than £800.000 included moving the whole Tower 80+ feet inland from its original position to prevent it falling into the sea in the future. Built between 1830 and 1831 by the Rev John Richards ,possibly erected to celebrate his own 70th birthday, it originally housed guests. It was used later as a coastguard lookout. Although not open to the public as it is let for Summer and Winter short breaks, it is well worth a visit for walkers and those who simply love the wonderful scenery that this part of the Jurassic Coast has in such abundance. Why not make it part of a day out to Wareham or Swanage and find a nice country Inn to have lunch.
