6, 7, 8 Settembre all'Idroscalo: Magnolia Parade.
GRAZIE!!!

Quattro e cinque: TORNANO LE FAVE! (dove e come, vedi sopra).

Lui no però.

Fragile, emotional, classical indie music would maybe be the best term to describe Ólafur Arnalds’ music. Combining classical instrumentation with an indierock aesthetic there are obvious comparisons to Sigur Rós, but Arnalds is sculpting his own epic, string-laden compositions.

Earlier this summer I wrote a music update for Teddy’s alternative press at Roger Williams

Earlier this summer I wrote a music update for Teddy's alternative press at Roger Williams University (the Bird Cage). Since he has returned to school, he has asked me to write a similar update concerning fall. Well, seeing how it isn't fall yet, and seeing how the deadline was last night, I wrote about the end of summer. Even though I do listen to leaked music, even the greatest leaks aren't more than a month ahead of the release date--well, with exceptions, the infamous leaking of Radiohead's Hail to the Thief, which leaked in a pre-finished form about a year ahead of its official release.

After visiting the Bird Cage website, it's pretty clear that the site's quality is not that visually appealing. Yes, the site looks like it was designed in the middle of the 1990s using the Geocities page builder, and yes there are some pretty noticeable typos throughout the site, including on the main page, but the site isn't exactly being worked on by a bunch of professionals. Teddy took the time last spring (during my final semester) to learn how to use Dreamweaver, and designed the site from the bottom up, "from scratch" you might say. In addition to that, regardless of the few (or is it just two?) additional writers he has helping him out with content, he does all the writing himself. That said, I take pride in writing for this work in progress, and I also take pride in writing for a college audience, as I know I would have looked to greater powers when I was an undergrad learning about all the music being created out there.

The End of Summer Music Update

With the season for love, romance, and reproduction pretty much moving into the backs of our minds (for all you kids who don’t see keep track of these things, it’s called summer, and it’s a time for revealing fashion trends, aromatic plant scents, and densely-populated music festivals), even though we try our hardest for the season to stick around as long as possible, there’s a strange amount of upbeat albums still to be released this year. Actually, there is a nice diverse pampering coming our way in the next few months. August sees the release New Kids on the Block’s and Goo Goo Dolls’s Greatest Hits (I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere near the former one), a single by the Cure (yes, they’re still around, and with a remix album hitting shelves in September, Robert Smith’s hopeful new masterpiece can’t be far away), our family-film pal Ice Cube’s Raw Footage, You & Me by alt-indie rockers the Walkmen (which is currently waiting in line to be heard on my computer—if it’s anything like their last few albums, it will be worthy of more than one listen), Chemical Chords by Stereolab, and Protools by Gza (the Genius).

That list leaves a few out. For all you vinyl connoisseurs out there, Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails CD from earlier this year, the Slip, will be available for the turntables. For fans of superbly crafted, artsy indie-pop, check out the Swedish musician Lykke Li’s Youth Novels that calls forth those extra-special summer moments of youthful passion, flowers, and wildly positive emotional kicks. The first track is a more feminine approach to something out of Dark Side of the Moon. Later in the month (i. e. NOW) is spiced up with That Lucky Old Son by Brian Wilson (wait, that guy is still alive?) both on CD and vinyl, the negatively-received Oceans Will Rise by the Stills (make your own decision), the live disk by indie-rock extraordinaire group the Fiery Furnaces (called Remember so that you don’t forget), and something by some guy called Keith Urban.

While you’re getting over the fact that people actually like Keith Urban and find his albums explosively innovative, heart-warming, and revolutionary (don’t quote me on any of that), you can finish up your eighth month of the year with the fourth album by recently-returned that nine-piece hard rock group Slipknot (oh my, where did all those painful memories of high school come from?), unoriginally entitled All Hope is Gone. The band’s fourth effort is being described by some as sounding like Alice in Chains, and many say that the metal influence is dwindling on most of the tracks. Well, we’re streaming it here at the state government office, and it sounds pretty hard . . . but my place for Slipknot will always be the bottom, repressed area of my heart. To keep it fare, B. B. King’s One Kind Favor comes out this week too, and watch out 50 Cent fans! The Game’s Lax hits shelves, and chances are there will be a low-blow in there somewhere! If you want even more hating, pick up the deluxe edition for a few more bucks.

Speaking of deluxe editions, transition your lives into the shorter days of September with that New Kids on the Block’s The Block album in deluxe form, next week. That’s right, it’s like a cultural comeback of your favorite teenage boy band from nearly twenty years ago—hooray! There’s a lot of stuff coming out in September that you actually should check out, though. The most anticipated album of the year (in my book) is Skeletal Lampings by indie psych-poppers Of Montreal, the follow-up to the album from last year that I played more than any other, Hissing Fauna Are You the Destroyer? I’ve already acquired the album and, after listening to its 60-minute-long-entirety two times in a row last night, I’ve already found myself oddly hooked. Why oddly? You’ll have to read my review of it when you get a chance (and/or when it’s available).

One of my favorite contemporary rappers/club rappers/crunk rappers is Young Jeezy and his Recession hits in a couple weeks. Who doesn’t love a rapper whose samples himself backing his lyrics in his own songs? And who doesn’t love a rapper who raps about having sex in the club with string-wash electronica music in the background? I don’t know much about the limited edition cut of Radiohead’s OK Computer and Kid A, but based around everything that’s gone on with them recently, they probably don’t even know those are being released. Same goes for that Morrissey DVD that came out this month, so steer clear. Instead, give Metallica another chance (any direction from St. Anger is going up) with Death Magnetic (the first single’s already on the radio-waves, and is getting positive attention, though most fans are waiting for the album release). Another album that’s available, though currently unreleased (give it a couple weeks) is Okkervil River’s follow-up to last year’s amazing album the Stage Names. Part two in the two-album series is the Stand-Ins, and it’s more somber, country-rock influenced, with richer verses, more simplistic melodies, and an equal entertainment value. In the “what happened to them” category, we’ve got releases from LL Cool J and Calexico.

If all that doesn’t fill you up for the next few weeks, send me an email and I’ll hook you up with some noise rock, an African Scream disk, an Icelandic pianist who is being thrown into the indie-rock boat, a Korean cellist that isn’t, and some Minimalist Electronica that will make you jump up and say “we’re going to Detroit” (which I hope you don’t actually go through with).

Bo, na dodatek, umiejętności brak by wszystko przekazać.

Burza braw, pisków i okrzyków wytrąciła mnie z kontemplacji.

Melancholijne i piękne „Fljótavík” pociągnęło mnie głębiej.

Rytmiczne i beztroskie. Zielona, wiosenna łąka podczas majowego poranka. Idylla.

Oniemiała publiczność nieomal z nabożną czcią wysłuchała go do ostatniego taktu.

Wreszcie utwór porwał i nieomal utopił wszystkich. Zanurzeni, oniemiali i cisi obserwowali żywioł do samego końca. Z szeroko otwartymi oczami i twarzą wyrażającą błogostan.

Sprzedawcy emocji. )

Lecz dopiero zmierzające do finału „Gobbledigook” poderwało wszystkich.

Ponowne wyjście zespołu wzbudziły jeszcze większy tumult, a pierwsze dźwięki bisu podniosły temperaturę do niewyobrażalnego poziomu.

I właśnie wtedy...

...delikatne odgłosy gitary z samplerowanym tłem i perkusyjnym podkładem rozpoczynają najlepszy song, jaki zdarzyło się Sigurom nagrać. Ostatni track z (), czyli „Untitled #8”, „Popplagið”, „The Pop Song” czy też „Piosenka popowa”. Ten utwór to absolutne i całkowite mistrzostwo.

Pełne zatracenie i pełna jedność.

I wreszcie wybuch. Orgazm. Spełnienie. Katharsis. Tysiąc myśli i miliard emocji na sekundę. Całkowity brak słów. Pobudka ze snu. Koniec. Powrót do rzeczywistości. Uczucie depersonalizacji.

I to mimo kolejnego bisu - „Viðrar Vel Til Loftárása”.

P.S.

I chuj.

Let it never be said that we are insensitive to our legions of readers — you search for it, we

Let it never be said that we are insensitive to our legions of readers -- you search for it, we'll make a mix about it! Although in this case, we're indulging ourselves a bit by treating "On The Way to College" as a concept rather than a simple road trip mix. And, I guess this isn't really a mix as much as it is a conversation. Who cares about the details though! As always, Brian has all things guitar covered in the post just below, so I'm going to throw in my two cents for some other styles.

First up: Electronic legends Boards of Canada. If you like them, I'd suggest checking out Clark (clip) or Proem (track). I don't think either really has the kind of druggy haze that BoC does so well (Clark is more dense, Proem more digital), but they both have similar accessibility and the same head-nodding hip-hop substructure.

Speaking of hip-hop, if you're into Kanye, Common, Lupe, or any of the other mainstream "backpack" MC's, I'd really suggest giving some spins to what I feel is one of the top 5 hip-hop records of all time: Aesop Rock's "Labor Days" (track, and I'll buy you a drink if you catch the literary reference in it). In terms of intellectual lyricism, I don't think it gets much better than this -- Ace can sometimes get bogged down in his own flow, but not on Labor Days. Every track on it is tight and precise, and C-Rayz Walz and Illogic rise to the occasion with staggering guest spots.

If you're into classical music, more power to you. I don't really know a damn thing about classical music. But, I do listen to a few minimalist "modern classical" (I don't like that label, but I don't know what to call it instead) composers that, hey, maybe you might enjoy. I'd suggest Max Richter (track), Sylvain Chauveau (track), or Ólafur Arnalds (track).

DJ culture has a lot of superstars: The Pauls van Dyk and Oakenfold, Sasha, Tiesto, etc etc. I got into dance music through these guys just like I'm sure many others did, but there are a lot of under-the-radar producers who are just as good. If you like it deep and dubby, I suggest H.Amézquita (track), a Mexican producer on Static Discos who put out one great LP then seemingly vanished. If you like more of a techno edge, try out Chicago's own Kate Simko (track) or her work with Andres Bucci as Detalles. And if you like your dance music a little funkier, try anything on Get Physical (home of Booka Shade and M.A.N.D.Y., and their mix CD's are exceptional) or Om (Kaskade, Mark Farina).

Moving on to jazz... If you, like all men and women of culture, are familiar with Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue," well, excellent. It's revered for good reason. But you want something that not everyone's on to, right? Something crazy and collegiate? Then I suggest the fabulous Polish free jazz combo Robotobibok (track). They do a lot of wild improvisation, but not so much that it's unlistenable. If you find that too busy, try Pink Freud instead -- also Polish, also very modern (they have a turntablist!), but less avant-garde and more psychedelic instead.

Finally, as Brian did, let me throw some suggestions out there for anyone reading this and laughing derisively. These will mostly be electronic:

Like Squarepusher, Autechre, etc? Try Yasume.
Like "ambient" music? Try The Fun Years or Fjordne.
Like post-rock? Try The Drift.
And if you want extreme electronic cred, check out Telecognac or Cyclo.

Ólafur Arnalds is a young Icelandic pianist and composer from the small town of Mosfellsbær, just to the north of Reykjavik and home to Sigur Rós's studios. His music has a melodic richness coupled with a quiet melancholy that has echoes of the work of Max Richter and his compatriot Jóhann Jóhannsson. Variations of Static lies somewhere between and EP and an LP, a twenty minute collection of five pieces for piano and string quartet, with a certain amount of electronic jiggery-pokery added for good measure.

Lead track “Fok” is the most upbeat and immediately accessible of the five – almost like an A side in fact. The others form a deeply sad suite that sounds like an elegy. A computerized voice pops up on a couple of pieces. Like on Jóhannsson's IBM 1401, this is machinery with a soul and with a resigned sense of its own mortality:

Do you still remember when we were little?
We were playing in the park,
And you asked me what happens when you die.
I said you forget everything...everything.
'Even you?' you asked.
Yes, even me.
You did not want to die. Never forget.
The remains of what we used to have were taken away with the softest squeeze.
How did I forget? How...

For some reason, these words to the final track “Himininn er að hrynja en stjörnurnar fara þér vel” (which roughly translates as 'Even though the skies are falling, the stars are still beautiful') are crushingly sad coming from a computer generated voice.

Variations of Static is a remarkable work. As a bonus, the CD comes with a download code that allows you to get an eleven track Erased Tapes sampler album for free.

Alla - Es Tiempo (2008 )
Alla are three Mexican-Americans from Chicago. Lead singer Lupe Martinez sings in breathy Spanish over laid-back, yet unremarkable music. I tried really hard to like this album, but I kept forgetting what I was listening to. The songs are light and airy but tend to swoop into areas that don't take the songs anywhere. "El Moviemento" is one of the few tracks to somewhat have a working formula. The song is like a psychedelic country ride that beautifully builds toward the end, not in a overdone way but just enough to realize the song has ended and another track is about to start (wish I could say the same about the others). Alla has great potential, though. They might be making pretty background music now, but who knows where they'll be tomorrow.

Olafur Arnalds - Eulogy For Evolution (2007)
From Iceland, Olafur Arnalds has been getting lots of press for this year's captivating Variation of Static. It's only logical to see where Arnalds began and have a look at his debut. Eulogy For Evolution is sparser and more delicate. The songs are like icicles in their perfection -- as if one touch or sudden move will cause the entire song to collapse. Arnalds reminds me somewhat of my favorite band, World's End Girlfriend. The difference is Arnalds is less interested in making something frantic and experimental -- he's more of a minimalist. But both musicians have a classical aesthetic to their music that's refreshing to hear. In fact, I think this album is slightly better than Variation Of Static. But shh, don't tell anyone.

So the second set of my hyper-photo series "A Tax of Images" has been instituted.

That once-attractive Sigur Ros review did not exactly fit into my schedule, though I should briefly say how much I highly recommend all the tracks on it, if only because the album rouses and rattles, through its dichotomous ease and halter, just as the band once pacified and incapacitated with all those floating capabilities and angelic intoxicants.

Another artist from Iceland has recently caught my attention as well. It's strange that I noticed I had some Olafur Arnalds deep on my external drive, and I am still not quite sure how I was once able to give him a listen and yet still ended up burying him with a marked "this is a good artist" nod. In essence, he and his hauntingly Romantic beach-house eulogies and dirges of to-be-passing static go well with both reconnaissance imagining and imaging.

In other directions, I have some Mayakovsky on the way, and some "antipoetry" too. Combined with Philip Roth, Thomas Mann, and Rexroth translations, my eyes will be full.

Also, I am suiting up my troubled spirits for the holiday that's right around the corner, which I will indeed be posting a full report on.

3055- Del álbum Eulogy for Evolution
[audio http://www.rap.de/download/OlafurArnalds-3055.mp3]

3055, en vivo

¿Podrías describir “Variations of Static”?

Fok, tema incluido en Variations of Static

¿Has escuchado música argentina?

Interview in english

How do you do to change radically your energy from an extreme punk expression to a classic mood?
I'm just expanding my musical spectrum. I'm interested in every kind of music so it's not like i stopped making hardcore and just started making this classical stuff instead. But of course I am much more concentrating on this at the moment as it takes up most my time. It's a totally different energy that goes into each type of music but that is what i find most interesting about it.

Have you found some common points between hardcore and classical music?
Well it's all just music, that's the common point. It's just expression of different types of feelings. Some feelings must be expressed in a loud, aggressive way, while some feelings must be expressed through a more quiet, melancholic way.

Why does the song´s titles of Eulogy for Evolution are numbers?
The numbers are a part of the whole concept of Eulogy for Evolution. It’s pretty hard to explain it in a written interview where I don’t have the album artwork to show you what I am talking about. But I never meant for people to completely understand this, I think that most people get that this is somehow connected to the pictures in the booklet and that’s enough really.
The album is a story, and I imagine the pictures inside the booklet being shot at certain points in the story, and the numbers are actually the times (minutes and seconds) in the album that I imagine the image being shot at. The album is a story and the images are supposed to support that story.

Can you describe Variations of Static?
It is more minimalist than Eulogy for Evolution, much less epic. I also introduced some electronics. There is a re-occurring computer voice on the album that speaks about human feelings. With that i'm trying to point out the surreality of computers having feelings and trying to get people to think about where feelings come from and why we have them.

Some of the songs of Variations of Static will be in your next album? How will be the name of the next record?
I have not got far enough with my next record to start thinking about a name. But no, there will be no songs off Variations of Static on it.

Could you in the future to include hardcore arrengements or hardcore sounds in a indie classic record?
You never know.. If i am working with a concept that i feel like i must use these elements to deliver the concept, then i'll do it. But I already did this on Eulogy for Evolution and i doubt i will do it again.

How did the proposition to tour with Sigur Rós arose and what does it mean for you to tour with them?
It actually started out as a rumor that was not true. I started seeing all over the internet advertisements and news pages saying that I would be supporting Sigur Rós on tour.. I called my booking agent and he knew nothing about this, and no one else did either.. so in the end i called Kjartan from Sigur Rós and asked him if he knew anything about this, he said no and that this was just some rumor. But we continued talking and in the end we decided that we should just do it!

What do you think about the great and positive reaction of people and critics about your music?
Of course i think it's great! I'm glad that people like my music.

Have you planned more projects aside the new album?
Just a few small side-projects. But I am mainly concentrating on writing a new album now. I'm hoping to release it in spring 2009.

Have you listened argentinian music?
Not much, just some traditional stuff, but i'm not familiar with any composers or bands.

Which are the more popular indie groups of Iceland?
Apart from Sigur Rós it's Múm, Bloodgroup, Kimono, Seabear... there are loads of good bands there!

Wich are your favorite musicians?
Way too many to mention, but it's everything from indie stuff like Death Cab for Cutie to classical artists like Arvo Part or Dmitri Shostakovich.. to hardcore bands like Converge or even techno.. This is an impossible question really.

I found the site after reading someone's post on tgq's music thread. Even the funds were transferred electronically.

Ten plus years after Rushkoff and the rest, it's still kinda cool.

Variations of Static: short, intense press of strings, piano dotted by subtle electronics. It's a bit sad, tangy, and dank. Reminds me a bit of the soundtrack to Angels of the Universe by Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson and Sigur Rós, though not as helplessly bright.

3055 – Olafur Arnalds
[audio http://www.rap.de/download/OlafurArnalds-3055.mp3]
