As part of Mozilla Corporation’s ongoing stability and security update process, Firefox 3.0.1 is now available for Windows, Mac, and Linux for free download from their main website.

Exactly one month after the original Firefox 3.0 release comes its first security and stability update labeled Firefox 3.0.1, the first also to feature the new three digit numbering method instead of previous 4-digit scheme.

Firefox 3.0.1 fixed several issues found in Firefox 3:

Fixed  several security issues.

Fixed several stability issues.

Fixed an issue where the phishing and malware database did not update on first launch.

Under certain circumstances, Firefox 3.0 did not properly save the SSL certificate exceptions list.

Updated the internal Public Suffix list.

In certain cases, installing Firefox 2 in the same directory in which Firefox 3 has been installed resulted in Firefox 2 being unstable. This issue was fixed as part of Firefox 2.0.0.15.

Fixed an issue where, when printing a selected region of content from the middle of a page, some of the output was missing (bug 433373).

Fixed a Linux issues where, for users on a PPP connection (dialup or DSL) Firefox always started in "Offline" mode (bug 424626).

The Mozilla Development Team strongly recommends that all Firefox users upgrade to this latest release. If you already have Firefox 3.0, you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting “Check for Updates…” from the Help menu.

It has been a while I wrote about sharing my personal woas at work with my two colleagues. They were enthousiastic, but ever since they did nothing with it, unless sporadiccaly looking up some information.
So I consider this more or less a failure.
It has nothing to do with the "personal" of the personal wiki. There was nothing personal in it. It is just that they are not used to wiki's.

Me, I keep it up to date.
I also started a second one at home for whatever info. Very useful.

By the way : at work we use MS Internet explorer, at home I use Mozilla Firefox. With internet explorer it looks a bit ugly, with firefox it is perfect.

Everybody’s favorite open-source browser, Firefox, is great right out of the box. And by adding so

Everybody’s favorite open-source browser, Firefox, is great right out of the box. And by adding some of the awesome extensions available out there, the browser just gets better and better.

But look under the hood, and there are a bunch of hidden (and some not-so-secret) tips and tricks available that will crank Firefox up and pimp your browser. Make it faster, cooler, more efficient. Get to be a Jedi master with the following cool Firefox tricks.

1) More screen space. Make your icons small. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize and check the “Use small icons” box.

2) Smart keywords. If there’s a search you use a lot (let’s say IMDB.com’s people search), this is an awesome tool that not many people use. Right-click on the search box, select “Add a Keyword for this search”, give the keyword a name and an easy-to-type and easy-to-remember shortcut name (let’s say “actor”) and save it. Now, when you want to do an actor search, go to Firefox’s address bar, type “actor” and the name of the actor and press return. Instant search! You can do this with any search box.

3) Keyboard shortcuts. This is where you become a real Jedi. It just takes a little while to learn these, but once you do, your browsing will be super fast. Here are some of the most common (and my personal favs):

* Spacebar (page down)
* Shift-Spacebar (page up)
* Ctrl+F (find)
* Alt-N (find next)
* Ctrl+D (bookmark page)
* Ctrl+T (new tab)
* Ctrl+K (go to search box)
* Ctrl+L (go to address bar)
* Ctrl+= (increase text size)
* Ctrl+- (decrease text size)
* Ctrl-W (close tab)
* F5 (reload)
* Alt-Home (go to home page)

4) Auto-complete. This is another keyboard shortcut, but it’s not commonly known and very useful. Go to the address bar (Control-L) and type the name of the site without the “www” or the “.com”. Let’s say “google”. Then press Control-Enter, and it will automatically fill in the “www” and the “.com” and take you there - like magic! For .net addresses, press Shift-Enter, and for .org addresses, press Control-Shift-Enter.

5) Tab navigation. Instead of using the mouse to select different tabs that you have open, use the keyboard. Here are the shortcuts:

* Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward among tabs)
* Ctrl+Shft+Tab (rotate to the previous tab)
* Ctrl+1-9 (choose a number to jump to a specific tab)

6) Mouse shortcuts. Sometimes you’re already using your mouse and it’s easier to use a mouse shortcut than to go back to the keyboard. Master these cool ones:

* Middle click on link (opens in new tab)
* Shift-scroll down (previous page)
* Shift-scroll up (next page)
* Ctrl-scroll up (decrease text size)
* Ctrl-scroll down (increase text size)
* Middle click on a tab (closes tab)

7) Delete items from address bar history. Firefox’s ability to automatically show previous URLs you’ve visited, as you type, in the address bar’s drop-down history menu is very cool. But sometimes you just don’t want those URLs to show up (I won’t ask why). Go to the address bar (Ctrl-L), start typing an address, and the drop-down menu will appear with the URLs of pages you’ve visited with those letters in them. Use the down-arrow to go down to an address you want to delete, and press the Delete key to make it disappear.

8) Code: User chrome. If you really want to trick out your Firefox, you’ll want to create a UserChrome.css file and customize your browser. It’s a bit complicated to get into here, but check out this tutorial.

9) Create a user.js file. Another way to customize Firefox, creating a user.js file can really speed up your browsing. You’ll need to create a text file named user.js in your profile folder (see this to find out where the profile folder is) and see this example user.js file that you can modify. Created by techlifeweb.com, this example explains some of the things you can do in its comments.

10) about:config. The true power user’s tool, about.config isn’t something to mess with if you don’t know what a setting does. You can get to the main configuration screen by putting about:config in the browser’s address bar. See Mozillazine’s about:config tips and screenshots.

11) Add a keyword for a bookmark. Go to your bookmarks much faster by giving them keywords. Right-click the bookmark and then select Properties. Put a short keyword in the keyword field, save it, and now you can type that keyword in the address bar and it will go to that bookmark.

12) Speed up Firefox. If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, it’s optimized for dialup connections). Here’s how:

* Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit return. Type “network.http” in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):
* Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
* Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
* Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.
* Also, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0?. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

13) Limit RAM usage. If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us. Again, go to about:config, filter “browser.cache” and select “browser.cache.disk.capacity”. It’s set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.

14) Reduce RAM usage further for when Firefox is minimized. This setting will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, taking up much less memory. And there is no noticeable difference in speed when you restore Firefox, so it’s definitely worth a go. Again, go to about:config, right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean. Name it “config.trim_on_minimize” and set it to TRUE. You have to restart Firefox for these settings to take effect.

15) Move or remove the close tab button. Do you accidentally click on the close button of Firefox’s tabs? You can move them or remove them, again through about:config. Edit the preference for “browser.tabs.closeButtons”. Here are the meanings of each value:

* 0: Display a close button on the active tab only
* 1 Default) Display close buttons on all tabs
* 2  Don’t display any close buttons
* 3 Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)

16) Here is a crack/trick for Megaupload which stops the message "All download slots... assigned to your country are in use..." from appearing while downloading a file.
Here is solution:

-Go to address bar and type: about:config
-Search for general.useragent.extra.firefox

-Double click on it
-Change the default text with this: Firefox/2.0 MEGAUPLOAD 1.0
-or if you are using 2.0.0.4 version type next: Firefox/2.0.0.4 MEGAUPLOAD 1.0
-Start Downloading witout any Toolbar

Newbie like me works faster with a blog writing editors that are available at free download of the software’s webpage. The writing editing software are useful for writing and posting to blogs of almost all platforms. They're also useful for insertion of videos, photos, quotes and for editing your published posts. Below are 3 writing softwares, including Microsoft Word2007:-

Word 2007 - (not really a writer but it can post to your blog form window)

Firefox SubcribeFire

Blogdesk

All writing and editing capabilities of the software I think Blogdesk is definitely user friendly for my use. Please install net environment update in your computer from Window as windows live writer can only work in a computer with that platform. As I know Windows live writer cannot work on 64 bits operating system as yet. As I use a 64 bit operating system I find that Blogdesk is an acceptable solution for my editing prowess.

Firefox from Mozilla Corporation is the best browser that has surpassed it's nearest competitors IE and Opera in terms of:

* improved tabbed browsing
* pop up blocking
* integrated Goggle search
* enhanced privacy controls
* built-in phishing protection
* online spell checking
* lots of themes, interfaces, and extensions/addons

Download Firefox Now

Well here are some of the Tweaks in order to squeez Firefox power at its best:

Warning: Try these tweaks at your own risk and also, if you are not sure about any tweak (what this will actually do), just move ahead.

Type about:config in the address bar and then press Enter.

1. HTTP PIPELINING
In the filter search bar type network.http.pipelining Be sure the value field is set true,if not double-click to set true. HTTP is the application-layer protocol that most web pages are transferred with. In HTTP 1.1, multiple requests can be sent before any responses are received. This is known as pipelining. Pipelining reduces page loading times, but not all servers support it.

2. NETWORK PIPELINING
Go back to the filter search bar and type network.http.pipelining.maxrequests Double-click this option and set its value to 8.

3. MAX PIPELINING
In the filter search bar and type network.http.proxy.pipelining Once opened doubleclick on it and set it to true.

4. IP ADDRESS PROTOCOL DELAY
In IPv6-capable DNS servers, an IPv4 address may be returned when an IPv6 address is requested. It is possible for Mozilla to recover from this misinformation, but a significant delay is introduced.
Type network.dns.disableIPv6 in the filter search bar and set this option to true by double clicking on it.

5. CONTENT INTERRUPT PARSING

This preference controls if the application will interrupt parsing a page to respond to UI events. It does not exist by default. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New and then Boolean from the pop-up menu. Then:
A. Enter content.interrupt.parsing in the New boolean value pop-up window and click OK
B. When prompted to choose the value for the new boolean, select true and click OK.

6. RENDERING

Rather than wait until a page has completely downloaded to display it to the user, Mozilla applications will regularly render what has been received to that point. This option controls the maximum amount of time the application will be unresponsive while rendering pages. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter content.max.tokenizing.time in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 2250000 and click OK.

7. CONTENT NOTIFY INTERVAL

This option sets the minimum amount of time to wait between reflows. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Type content.notify.interval in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 750000 and click OK.

8. CONTENT NOTIFY ONTIMER

A. This option sets if to reflow pages at an interval any higher than that specified by content.notify.interval. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Boolean from the pop-up menu.
B. Type content.notify.ontimer in the New boolean value pop-up window and click OK.
C. You will be prompted to choose the value for the new boolean. Select true and click OK.

9. NOTIFY BACKOFFCOUNT

This option controls the maximum number of times the content will do timer-based reflows. After this number has been reached, the page will only reflow once it is finished downloading. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter content.notify.backoffcount in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 5 and click OK.

10. CONTENT SWITCH THRESHOLD

You can interact with a loading page when content.interrupt.parsing is set to true. When a page is loading, the application has two modes: a high frequency interrupt mode and a low frequency interrupt mode. The first one interrupts the parser more frequently to allow for greater UI responsiveness during page load.
The low frequency interrupt mode interrupts the parser less frequently to allow for quicker page load. The application enters high frequency interrupt mode when you move the mouse or type on the keyboard and switch back to low frequency mode when you had no activity for a certain amount of time. This preference controls that amount of time. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter content.switch.threshold in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 750000 and click OK.

11. NGLAYOUT INITIALPAINT DELAY

Mozilla applications render web pages incrementally, they display what’s been received
of a page before the entire page has been downloaded. Since the start of a web page
normally doesn’t have much useful information to display, Mozilla applications will wait
a short interval before first rendering a page. This preference controls that interval. Rightclick (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter nglayout.initialpaint.delay in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 0 and click OK.

Ever since I first came to know about a browser called Safari ( Apple’s browser that is availa

Ever since I first came to know about a browser called Safari ( Apple's browser that is available for Windows also) , I have been using it. No, I'm not one of those guys obsessed with Apple since I was a little boy. Infact I've been using Safari only for the last 6 months. Its (read as Apple's) font-rendering technology amazes me. Even as I type this blog and as the words come out, I just love the style of these fonts. They are so easy on the eye especially for a guy like me who reads tons of raw text on the computer screen everyday. But lately I have been facing one major problem with Safari. The webpages don't load( Isn't that what it's supposed to help me out with? ) The commonly displayed error message has been "Safari was not able to find the server." It was utterly frustrating. To my shock, when I downloaded Opera 9.5 and installed it, it was displaying those webpages easily. No error messages. No frustration.

But then since I liked Safari's font rendering technology so much, I just couldn't give up on it. I downloaded Firefox 3 on "Download Day." And to my surprise I found something strange about Safari and Firefox. When I have both Safari and Firefox open side by side, I don't get the problems I usually get with Safari and the missing server. Also if I login into Gmail using Firefox, I'm able to use the same through my Safari. I wonder what kind of mysterious bond is shared by the two. I guess there might be some sharing of cache memory or cookies ( or whatever technical jargon I'm currently ignorant of ) But fact is they both are working great. But I'm using Safari ofcourse. Apart from its font rendering, some of its other merits are

Simple user interface. Once you use it, it's really the easiest there is.

The menus and address bars occupy very little space, leaving the major portion of your screen free to display actual webpage content.

The bookmarks window is really good and simple. Not only does it automatically get the previous bookmarks from your already installed browser, it makes organizing your bookmarks a breeze.

The auto complete feature for webpage addresses includes bookmarks as well. This is a feature that I haven't seen in many browsers. When you type your URL in the address bar, it automatically lists similar entries found in the bookmarks(as opposed to entries in the History which most browsers normally display)

Apart from that it has all the usual features of a webpage. I'll give you a few screen shots to give you a glimpse of what I'm actually talking about.

Note: This applies to Firefox 3 only.

One of the 'new' features in Firefox 3 is a graphical preview of the images, text, tabs, etc. your are dragging. This was suppose to make it easier for you to see where you were dragging the item. For text it is not too bad, but for images I found the preview makes it more difficult to properly drag and drop. Good news is you can easily turn off this feature and return to the familiar 'box' outline for drag and drop as in Firefox 2. To turn off this feature:

In a new tab type about:config

In the filter field type nglayout.enable_drag_images

Double-click on the entry below so the value is false

Close the tab (no restart needed)

I finally got sick and tired of getting the infamous error that has become a frequent flier on my computer since I.E. 7 came out. You know it; it goes something like this.

Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Sheesh!! How many times does it need to close and send error reports before they figure out the damn problem.

I have now switched over to Mozilla Firefox as my default browser and I am going to use this for awhile and see how it operates. So far, I find it to be more reliable and much faster. It will take time for me to get use to the browser not displaying graphics and some fonts like I am used to but hey, this could be a lesson in patience. I look forward to exploring all the add ons!!

Ah, more toys to play with...

Have you ever seen any self promotional ads done by advertising agencies?
This is a Disclaimer
A com

Have you ever seen any self promotional ads done by advertising agencies?

This is a Disclaimer

A commonly mouthed phrase in advertising field is that “Yes, we know the ad is just an average one. It is because the client does not share our vision and the budget was not enough. It is a pity. When are we going to have a perfect client?”

Go out and see (that means, do a ‘Google’) a self-promotional ad done by an agency. I am 90% sure that you will find it equally bad and non-creative. Tell me, what is the reason for this ‘no-show’?

Just now I designed and uploaded a website promoting myself. I am 100% sure that you will find it as boring, lacks content, lacks animated stuff and not a ‘new-age’ thing. And the website claims that I am the only designer in this whole universe who is capable of doing wonderful and creative designs. Blah!

The beginning

I start every design on a white paper. So, for the website, I fixed the background color as White (#FFFFFF). I decided that I will have a simple and clutter-free interface. All the text and graphics will be static (no roll-over images and no flash animations). The text and images will be laid out in tables of fixed row heights and column widths. There will be minimum text and most of the website content will be images. The colors used for text and background will be: Red, Black, Green, Yellow and White. No images will be used in the navigation bar and in the name/logo.

If you are still interested, read on…

Layout

The widescreen format fascinates me. Technically speaking, the aspect ratio is 16:9. That means, for a width of 16 units, the height of the screen will be 9 units. I wanted the website in such a way that it looks like a projected image on a widescreen. To represent the curvature of the screen as seen in cinema theatres, I decided to add upper and lower shadows leaving the right and left edges for the viewer’s imagination.

Many people are still using 800X600 pixels of screen resolution in their PCs. So I fixed the maximum width as 750 pixels. Applying the 16:9 rule, the height will be 400 pixels approximately. A three column X three row table with 750 X 400 pixels is used as the template. Other parameters are: CellPad = 0; CellSpace = 0 and Border = 0.

The first row is designated for the name/logo. The second row has a Green background color where images will appear and the third row is where the text content will appear. The three columns of the second row can feature three images.

Navigation Bar

Navigation bar is placed in the bottom of the widescreen table. No rollover images. So I added the following code to the pages.

A:link { color: #009900; text-decoration: none; }
A:active { color: #009900; text-decoration: none; }
A:visited { color: #0066FF; text-decoration: none; }
A:hover { color: #FF0000; text-decoration: underline; }

This piece of code simply tells the browser that all the links are in Green color. When the cursor hovers over it, the style should change to Red underlined text. A visited link should appear in a pale Blue color.

Internet Explorer obeys these commands faithfully, but it seems that Mozilla Firfox has its own way.

The first row shows the navigation bar in Internet Explorer (Ver.6). ‘Newsletter’ is an unvisited link in Green, ‘Blog’ is a visited link in Pale Blue, ‘Contact’ is Red underlined text because the cursor is stationed over it.

The second row shows the navigation bar in Mozilla Fiefox (Ver. 2). All links are blue and are underlined in default. There is no distinction between an unvisited link and an active link. Cursor hovering effect is OK.

Links denoting a page are disabled in the corresponding pages only. The white text appears in a red background which visually conveys the idea to the viewer. When he is in a submenu page showing one example of work, links are retrained in a Yellow background. See the third row in the above image.

Vertical Scroll Bar

One page has some text in a table cell that is too long to contain in the designated height of 200 pixels. The following code ensures that a vertical scroll bar appears for the rescue.

<td width="500" td height="200" colspan="2" class="style4"> <div style="width: 500; height:200; overflow: auto"> <p>

/* The long text appears here*/

</p> </div> </td>

An attempt was also done to alter the look of the scroll bars by placing the following code.

SCROLLBAR-FACE-COLOR: #FFFFFF;
SCROLLBAR-HIGHLIGHT-COLOR: #D9D9D9;
SCROLLBAR-SHADOW-COLOR: #808080;
SCROLLBAR-3DLIGHT-COLOR: #D9D9D9;
SCROLLBAR-ARROW-COLOR: #000000;
SCROLLBAR-TRACK-COLOR: #FFFFFF;
SCROLLBAR-DARKSHADOW-COLOR: #808080;
SCROLLBAR-BASE-COLOR: #FFFFFF;

Again Explorer and Firefox responded differently.

The scroll bar on the left appears in Internet Explorer and the other is in Mozilla Firefox.

It is voting time!

That’s all folks! Visit the website and I am ready for the brickbats. I am an average person in the art of dodging, though. Yes, you may find one or two Easter eggs…

Second thoughts

A flash based version of this website is under construction.

Useful links for the 'really interested' people

A Favicon is a small icon that appears in the address bar of your browser along with the website address. It is an icon with a dimension of 16 X 16 pixels and is also displayed in the saved website links in your 'bookmarks' or 'favorites'. Steps on creating a favicon in Photoshop, the plugin needed to save the icon in *.ico format and the html coding needed to make the browser display the favicon are explained in detail at:

'Mysteries Of The Favicon.ico — How To Create A Favicon In Photoshop.'

A feedback form is used widely in websites to establish an instant communication link between the website visitor and the website owner. To add this feature to your website, you need:-

An html page showing the feedback form

A feedback form script in PHP that collects, formats the data and e-mail to an ID specified by you

A web hosting service who allows to run the script in their server. This is usually a paid service.

An html 'Thank you!' page indicating a successful submission

An html 'Error!' page asking the visitor to re-enter the data

Since I am not at all good in explaining technical stuff to you, it is better to visit the pages:
