L'idea di base è la seguente: utilizzare un account Gmail (che ha un potentissimo ed efficacissimo filtro antispam) come intermediario per filtrare tutta la posta in arrivo destinata al vostro account saturo di spam.

Requisito fondamentale: il vostro account vittima di spam deve consentire l'accesso POP3 da qualunque postazione indipendentemente dal provider (quindi una casella di posta libero.it ad esempio non va bene) oppure l'account vittima deve offrire la possibilità di effettuare l'inoltro automatico di tutte le email ricevute verso un altro indirizzo di posta elettronica. Se il requisito è soddisfatto potrete continuare la lettura.

Ovviamente lo spam continuerà (purtroppo) ad arrivare, solo che sarà correttamente individuato e tenuto separato dai messaggi legittimi.

Supponiamo che il vostro indirizzo intasato di spam sia username@dominio.it.
Il trucco consiste nel creare un nuovo account Gmail (ad es. username@gmail.com) che andrà a controllare periodicamente la posta destinata alla casella username@dominio.it, filtrandola dallo spam presente.
Tutto lo spam finirà nella cartella Spam del vostro account Gmail mentre le email legittime saranno collocate nella cartella Posta in Arrivo.

Se il vostro account username@dominio.it consente l'inoltro automatico della posta in arrivo verso un altro indirizzo, dovrete impostarlo affinchè inoltri tutta la posta verso l'indirizzo Gmail creato.
L'alternativa consiste nell'impostare l'account Gmail affinchè vada a controllare periodicamente (tramite il protocollo POP3 e il servizio Mail Fetcher) la presenza di nuovi messaggi sul vostro indirizzo username@dominio.it
La frequenza dei controlli periodici effettuata da Gmail sugli account esterni non è personalizzabile, ma viene ottimizzata in funzione della frequenza con cui ricevete le email su quell'account.
Se il vostro account username@dominio.it supporta l'inoltro automatico è preferibile sfruttare questa opportunità: in questo modo i messaggi destinati a username@dominio.it arriveranno istantaneamente anche sulla casella gmail.

Ovviamente, volendo adottare questo metodo di filtraggio spam, non dovrete più leggere la posta dall'account username@dominio.it bensì l'account username@gmail.com che conterrà solo i messaggi "buoni".

L'account Gmail potrà essere controllato sia tramite sito web mail.google.com oppure tramite il vostro programma di posta elettronica preferito, in modalità POP3 o IMAP (che vanno prima abilitate dal sito di Gmail).

Per quanto riguarda l'invio dei messaggi, è molto probabile che vogliate far sì che il mittente delle risposte o dei nuovi messaggi risulti l'indirizzo vittima di spam (username@dominio.it) piuttosto che l'indirizzo Gmail (che non conosce nessuno).
Fortunatamente Gmail consente di spedire messaggi facendo risultare come mittente un altro vostro indirizzo di posta elettronica: impostatelo quindi per poter spedire messaggi dall'account username@dominio.it e tale indirizzo potrà essere impostato come account principale per gli invii e le risposte. Ovviamente potrete fare lo stesso nel vostro programma di posta preferito.

Con questo metodo ho ripreso ad utilizzare un vecchio account virgilio che avevo abbandonato per disperazione in quanto sommerso da migliaia di messaggi di spam. ;)

Tapi itu perlu beberapa operasi yang agak teknis. Ada cara lain yaitu mendownload semua email POP3 anda dari account GMail anda.

Dengan demikian walaupun server POP3 anda tidak cermat dalam memfilter spam tapi ketika email dalam POP3 anda didownload ke dalam GMail maka email spam yang masih  bisa lolos ke mailbox POP3 anda akan difilter lagi oleh GMail.

Kemudian untuk menghindari mailbox POP3 anda penuh maka setting pada GMail sebagai Mail Fetcher bisa anda set untuk tidak memberi tanda checklist pada setting: "Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server".

Dengan demikian setiap kali anda membuka atau logged in ke GMail maka GMail akan mengakses masuk ke account POP3 anda, mendownload semua emailnya lalu menghapusnya sehingga account POP3 anda tidak akan menumpuk dan penuh.

Berikut saya akan memberikan petunjuk cara melakukan setting Mail Fetcher pada GMail. Sebelumnya tentu anda harus memiliki account POP3 dan sebuah account GMail. Langkah pertama anda masuk (logged in) ke
GMail lalu buka menu Setting pada bagian kanan atas menu, setelah itu pilih tab Account.

Kemudian klik "Add another mail account", akan muncul window dialog baru sbb:

Masukkan alamat email POP3 anda, kemudian klik "Next Step". Anda diijinkan untuk memiliki hingga 5 account POP3 untuk di fetch. Setelah klik "Next Step" akan muncul:

Masukkan nama anda, kemudian klik "Next Step". Setelah klik "Next Step" akan muncul:

GMail perlu mengirim email verifikasi untuk dapat memberikan fasilitas "Send mail as". Email akan dikirim ke alamat email yang anda masukkan sebelumnya. Setelah itu klik tombol "Send Verification", kemudian akan tampil form konfigurasi POP3 email yang akan difetch:

Isi field form masing masing lalu klik tombol "Add Account". Setelah itu akan muncul:

Anda bisa memilih mengaktifkan fasilitas send mail as lalu klik "Next Step". Setelah itu akan muncul:

Pada saat setelah anda melakukan langkah verifikasi GMail akan mengirim sebuah email berisi sebuah angka untuk kode verifikasi, isinya seperti berikut:

Masukkan angka yang tertera disitu pada field code lalu klik tombol "Verify".

Setelah itu proses telah selesai dan jika anda melihat tab Account maka akan tampak sbb:

Anda telah bisa mendownload email dari acount POP3 anda, dan ketika anda kirim email anda bisa menggunakan fasilitas send me as, sebuah fasilitas yang memungkinkan anda mengirim email dari account GMail dengan "From:" diset dari account POP3 anda yang sudah di add ke dalam fasilitas GMail tadi.

Bila anda compose mail maka akan terlihat form compose seperti berikut:

Si penerima email anda akan menerima email seolah olah pemgirimnya adalah dari account POP3 anda padahal anda mengirimkannya dari account GMail anda. Demikian juga sebailknya bila email tersebut di balas ke alamat POP3 maka anda akan menerimnya di account GMail. Begitulah cara kerja Mail Fetcher.

I know it’s a terrible pickup line. And no, I have never followed up a pick up line with a discussion about email. In fact, I really don’t throw out many pick up lines. But “How do you email” is a question that I ask many people I meet. There are so many ways to email; most people have multiple accounts; and I am genuinely curious how the average user manages her many inboxes.

How do you email? Do you login to each account separately through each provider's webmail client? Do you use an email client application, like Outlook, Thunderbird or Lotus Notes? Do you forward all your email accounts to a single inbox? Do you use your Blackberry or iPhone?

I haven’t conducted research that you could necessarily call “scientific”, but I have asked this question many times. It turns out that the majority of email users choose to login to each account separately. I find this interesting because it sounds like a burden—an inefficient way to utilize a tool that is supposed to make communication more convenient.

Why don’t more people use Outlook or Thunderbird? These applications are great for managing multiple accounts. If your email accounts support POP3, IMAP or MAPI you can integrate them with most email client applications. Most provide you with an individual folder for each account. With an email client application you can access all your accounts through a single, well-organized interface. So why don’t most people do this?

The answer shouldn’t surprise you. Most people don’t know what POP or IMAP is. Those that are better versed with the jargon don’t necessarily know how to find their provider’s server settings, and Outlook, Thunderbird and Lotus Notes do not make it easy for a non-technical user to set up their POP or IMAP accounts. Furthermore, not all email providers provide POP or IMAP access. Hotmail only integrates with Outlook (Microsoft still plays monopoly). Yahoo users can only utilize POP3 if they upgrade their account to the $20/year Mail Plus subscription. In addition, many of these email applications are expensive. And lastly, most corporate users who utilize Outlook or Lotus Notes are restricted from integrating their personal email accounts. (More on this subject to come!)

So what about forwarding? Many email providers allow users to forward their messages to any inbox. Why don’t more people do this? I have found that most people shy away from email forwarding because they like to keep their inboxes separate. The main reason users have multiple accounts, is to stay organized. I have an account for business, an account for personal use and an account for my newsletters (my bacon). I like it that way. I know when I am in my business account, its all business. When I am in my personal account, it’s all fun. And my third account is for shopping and killing time. Gmail has a new forwarding service called Mail Fetcher that allows you to forward all your other accounts and distinguishes the messages source account through a half-baked color coding scheme. I am not sold on this solution; I simply don't like it.
