Sara Martin was a true pioneer in her own right as a performer and recording artist.

Although Chicago-based, Martin maintained close connections with Louisville, from where Hayes and Weaver also originated. She worked in vaudeville from 1915-31, thereafter devoting herself to the church and to running a nursing home in Louisville from the 40s until her death.

Although Louisville did not match the vitality of such jazz and blues centers as St. Louis, New Orleans, or Chicago, it had developed its own vibrant music scene by the late nineteenth century, when the blues singer later known as Sara Martin grew up. Born on June 18, 1884, to William and Katie (Pope) Dunn, Martin grew up in a city ruled by harsh racial segregation. However, Louisville's African-American residents enjoyed a distinct culture of their own that helped them survive in a separate but unequal environment. By 1900 Louisville had become known for its string bands (with guitar, banjo, and violin) and jug bands (with musicians using various combinations of gallon jugs, kazoos, mandolins, guitars, and harmonicas). Martin later brought one Louisville string-band guitarist, Sylvester Weaver, with her to New York City for one of her recording sessions in 1923; the tracks became the first-ever blues recordings that featured a guitar accompaniment.

Martin's stylized, theatrical renderings of the blues paled in comparison to those of her contemporaries Bessie Smith and "Ma" Rainey, yet some of her self-penned lyrics demonstrated a wry humor that was Martin's own. In the song "Mama's Got the Blues," which she wrote with Clarence Williams, Martin sang, "I got a man in Atlanta, two in Alabama, three in Chattanooga/Four in Cincinnati, five in Mississippi, six in Memphis, Tennessee/If you don't like my peaches, please let my orchard be!" Martin also demonstrated an even more ribald side in some of her other compositions such as "Mean Tight Mama." As her record company said about Martin in one of its press releases (later quoted in The Story of the Blues, ) "We're tellin' you there's none finer or grander when it comes to warblin' mean and hot low-down ravagin' Blues until you don't know whether your sensations is your wigglin' spine or if you spine has got the wigglin' blues."

Sara Martin also recorded under the names of Margaret Johnson and Sally Roberts.

I did this painting before bed last night, giving myself just an hour or two to complete an oil sketch. The panel I was using was a bit slick so the paint wasn't sticking as well as I'd have liked but I was reasonably pleased with the attempt.

While I was painting my wonderful next door neighbors brought me a huge bouquet of flowers for my birthday. For some reason, as each of the three kids and their parents said "Happy Birthday!" and gave me a hug I said "Happy Birthday to you too!" It wasn't until I'd said it three or four times that I realized it made no sense. Since English is their second language, maybe they thought that's just another odd American custom (or another odd Jana-ism). They already thought it was weird enough that I was spending my birthday evening by myself in my studio.

But of course painting is what makes me happy and I get to do what makes me happy on my birthday. I told them I'd paint the flowers the next day (and then realized I'd already started painting them as I'd answered the door with several painty brushes in my hand, and the paint was getting all over the bouquet wrapper.

I started the day with my annual tradition of a hike to Fat Apples Restaurant for a French Apple Pancake with my sister, my niece, and my best friend Barbara. We've been doing this every year for at least ten years and it was great spending time together and the pancake/souffle was perfect.

Asa cum probabil stiti, JUG-urile (Java Users Group) sunt grupuri formate din dezvoltatori /arhitecti /testeri
alte persoane tehnice implicate in activitati IT care au la baza tehnologii Java.

JUG-urile sunt organizatii non profit, neafilitate unei firme, fara personalitate juridica
si au rolul incurajarii membrilor si a comunitatii locale de dezvoltatori java in cresterea lor profesionala prin
organizarea de conferinte, simpozioane, prezentari, experiente comune, sesiuni demo din lumea tehnologiilor Java.

Companiile producatoare de software sunt incurajate sa sustina astfel de JUG-uri prin sponsorizarea evenimentelor
organizate de JUG (refreshments, sali de conferinta, materiale, persoane care sa sustina prezentari).
De asemenea un rol important il pot avea universitatile, autoritatile locale si media,
prin popularizarea unor astfel de evenimente care duc in fond la cresterea interesului pentru tehnologiile java si implicit
la cresterea profesionalismului participantilor: studenti, angajati IT, etc.

Ideea unui JUG la Cluj Napoca ne-a venit studiind fenomenul la nivel global si in UE si fiind
contrariati de faptul ca grupuri/comunitati cu relativ slaba reprezentare in IT sunt foarte active
pe Internet si in organizarea de evenimente, iar in Cluj Napoca, oras cu o foarte mare rata de crestere IT,
cu nume sonore de companii si cu multi, foarte multi profesionisti, nu exista o astfel de comunitate organizata in jurul unui JUG.
Am demarat o astfel de campanie si m-a bucurat interesul celor care "monitorizeaza" activitatea
unor astfel de JUG-uri la nivel global. Deasemnea am gasit interes in randul dezvoltatorilor din Cluj.
Tocmai de aceea demaram acesta initiativa.

Am dori sa cunoastem interesul dvs, dezvoltatori si orice persoana implicata din lumea Java:
daca v-ar interesa astfel de evenimente unde se faca prezentari, se discuta tehnologiile,
sunt invitate ca si speakers persoane recunoscute pentru activitatea in domeniu, etc.
Apartenenta la o astfel de comunitate locala java este evident gratuita, toate activitatile sunt voluntare
si fiecare poate contribui prin idei, propuneri
la organizarea unor astfel de evenimente.

In curand va fi disponibila o pagina de internet pe proiectul java.net, o lista de discutii (email) pentru membership
si inscrierea noastra oficiala in directorul JUG-urilor, pentru moment aprobat si trecut in faza "incubator".

Pentru moment, daca sunteti interesati sa faceti parte din echipa de startup si va desfasurati activitatea in zona Cluj,
indiferent ca sunteti student, pasionat de domeniul java, angajat IT, reprezentati o firma de IT sau o alta organizatie
care doreste sa se implice, sunteti binevenit si va rog sa imi scrieti pe adresa : ionel_condor (at) yahoo.com
sau puteti lasa un comment mai jos.

1. grupul nu este un sindicat, o asociatie profesionala sau o umbrela pentru head-hunting.
scopul exclusiv al grupului este promovarea tehnologiilor java si impartasirea experientei cu aceste tehnologii. Aderam intru totul princiipilor Sun cu privire la rolul si specificul activitatilor unui JUG:

"A Java User Group (JUG) is a group of people who share a common interest in Java technology and meet on a regular basis to share technical ideas and information. The actual structure of a JUG can vary greatly -- from a small number of friends and coworkers meeting informally in the evening to a large group of companies based in the same geographic area. Regardless of the size and focus of a particular JUG, the sense of community spirit remains the same." (http://java.sun.com/community/usergroups/)

2.membrii grupului nu trebuie sa fie neaparat specialisti java: poti fi studenti, programatori juniors etc la fel de bine cum pot fi cadre universitare sau persoane interesate de domeniul java dar care practica alta profesie.

This one has a special place in my heart because I've memorized how to answer it from when i was very young.

-You fill the five gallon tank all the way.

-pour from the five gallon into the 3 gallon tank, filling it up, thus leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon tank

-empty the 3 gallon tank

-pour the remaining 2 gallons from the 5 gallon tank into the 3 gallon tank

-fill up the 5 gallon tank all the way

-pour from the full 5 gallon tank into the 3 gallon tank (already with 2 gallons in it)

-this will fill up the 3 gallon tank with the extra gallon, and remove EXACTLY 1 gallon from the 5 gallon tank leaving EXACTLY 4 GALLONS!

-Ta-da!
