On to Napalm....

Because of the sheer volume and type of food the hoard consumed for the week, we decided to go on a diet. Yep... a DIET. After having the baby, I have yet to drop the weight. The dad has about #20 lb to drop too if he is going to be tip top for the fitness aspect of aforementioned job opportunity. We ate crap all week.... lots and lots of crap. I'm talking baseball game food, 4th of July cookout food, Grandee homemade biscuits, swing through a greasy drive through to get the baby to quit howlin food. Hence... the diet.

Some of you know the dad well and are even related to the dad. You know he doesn't do diets. This is a man who has eaten 2 sandwiches at a time his whole life and has taken 14 years of marriage to convince that one is adequate. The funny thing is.... this was HIS idea. So... I said I was game but with a few conditions. I have yo yo-ed enough to know what works and what is just plain stupid. I know that it's simple math. Calories in and Calories spent. You have to have a deficit to lose weight. So here was my deal.... I make the food, snacks etc. and you eat it. No complaints, no "uggggghhhhhhh" comments. You just shut your pie hole and eat it. There were a few " I hate that with my life" foods that I won't use to make it easier. No prob. The dad refuses oatmeal, broccoli, and cantaloupe. My theory is simple. Loads of veggies, some fruits, and proteins. No refined sugar, white bread, white rice, no soda, no beer. Loads of water.

We are in day one and let me just say that the diet is having a NAPALM effect on my marriage. It is literally melting away the lush foliage of our love and tolerance for one another. Don't get me wrong... we still love each other, it's just that showing anything but contempt for the person that seems to be starving you is difficult.  The dad has had a very grumpy day and I suspect he blames me for his lack of bacon grease, ice cream, fluffer nutter, etc. He has remained suspiciously quiet when I mention salad, whole wheat anything, and lower fat cheese. Yes, the man has placed me into the same realm as Hitler and Obama himself. If you know the dad, you know that he would prefer even a pregnant trailer dwelling toothless wonder as president over Obama. Side note: I can in fact refer to trailer dwelling in that sense because I lived in one for the first year of my marriage thank you very much. Yes indeedee, goodnight, and Amen.

Dia do rendez-vous para a carta de motorista. Fica no 855 da Henri Bourrassa Ouest. Tudo organizado e limpo, igual no prédio da Assurance Maladie.

Quando chegamos lá, o guarda pergunta o que é nosso caso e que horário. Encaminha-nos para uma ante-sala de espera, logo na entrada. Quando chega o horário que temos marcado, ele pede chama as pessoas que têm rendez-vous naquele horário para que se dirijam a recepção. Fala em inglês e francês. Lá, forma-se uma filinha básica, onde o atendente confere na ficha dele se estamos na lista daquele horário. Se sim, nos dá um nr. de senha e com ela nos encaminhamos a grande sala de espera, onde um painel vai chamando as senhas para encaminhar o povo aos guichês. Quando chamada nossa senha, vamos ao guichê abrir nossa ficha, o mesmo atendente já faz na hora exame de vista, cobra CAD 10,00 (cada guichê tem sua maquininha para passar cartão, coisa fina). Depois de abrir ficha, nos encaminhamos para a espera da sala de prova. Quando nos chamam, sentamos nos computadores e fazemos as provas no computador on line e o resultado sai na hora.

Depois do resultado, já podemos marcar a prova pratica, porem a demanda está tão alta, que só esta sendo possível agendar para final de agosto.

 A tarde começou meu curso de Realités sócio-economiques, la no Centre de la Jeunesse (Maisonneuve Ouest, 1001) Adorei. Neste primeiro dia foi uma passagem geral do contexto histórico e geográfico do Canadá e do Quebec. Eu já tinha estudado isso quando estava me preparando para o CSQ, mas ouvir um Quebecois contar a partir de seu ponto de vista, é outra coisa.

E curioso ver como os Quebecois falam daqui como se fosse um país a parte mesmo.
Na saída, resolvi ir a pé para gastar umas kcal´s e aproveitei para conhecer a LA BAIE.
Chentemmmmmmm!!! Quanta coisa legal! Tinham umas coisas bem feias também...mas a variedade é enorme, se passar 3 dias ali dentro acho que não da para ver tudo. Essa loja da Maisonneuve tem 7 andares e saída no metro. Algumas coisas considerei caras, outras baratas. Geralmente roupas de marcas que costumamos ver a preço de ouro, são mais baratas. Em compensação roupa Xing-Ling que custa R$10,00 na Zepa (R. José Paulino), aqui custa CAD 20,00. No way!!
A noite, aproveitamos que o Sol se põe tarde aqui no verão para comer Haaggen-Dazs no Parque La Fontaine, que apesar de morar do lado, ainda não tinha botado o pé la dentro!!

Ai gente, que lindos os esquilos, filmei uma família inteira fazendo lanchinho, muito fofo. Eles deixam a gente chegar pertinho, mas têm pavor dos cachorros (e esses por sua vez amam tentar pegar os esquilos). Ao menos sinal de cachorros, os esquilos somem.

Minhas fotinhas ficaram todas tremidas, então fiz um filme.

Ultimo dia do curso, onde o enfoque principal era como adequar nossa visão de como preparar o CV para a visão que eles tem aqui. Foi neste dia que Lapin-Père conheceu e me apresentou o Sr. Ben, o porteiro do prédio onde fiz o curso e que passou a fazer parte de nossa história imigrante. Aguardem cenas dos próximos capítulos deste personagem.

Hoje aproveitamos para fazer as primeiras sondagens de preços de móveis no IKEA.

Para começar, pegamos ônibus errado. Como fica em zona industrial, mais afastado da cidade e perto de rodovias, perdeu o ponto, ”dançou prêibói”! Aproveitamos para ficar passeando enquanto não chegavamos em um local que pudéssemos pegar o ônibus de volta. Nessas perambulanças, acabamos parando em um bairro que, xennntem, é lá que quero morar quando eu crescer... fala sério, que lugar lindo... na beira do Rio/Lago.

Fica no lado Oeste da cidade, e de repente se tem a impressão de estar no interior da Inglaterra.... Acho que o povo já compra casa com lancha/iate na garagem e campinho de golfe na frente de casa, com vista para o lago.

Quem quiser saber do que estou falando, pode pegar o ônibus 202 e dar uma passeadinha por lá, prestando atenção especilamente na av. Chemin Bord-du-Lac ou Lakeshore (o tal Lac é o Saint Louis)

Sobre o IKEA, achei uma decepção. Tem bastante coisa bem barata, mas só aquilo que a gente mal olha e ele desmonta. Tipo Lojas Dominó, Marabras, etc. O que é melhorzinho custa os olhos da cara. Para ter idéia do que to falando: um sofá cama ralezinho, daqueles que deixa com dor nas costas, em torno de CAD 200,00. A mesa de cozinha mais chinfrim que tinha lá, com 4 cadeiras, saia a CAD 119,00. Talvez algumas promoções de vez em quando valha a pena, mas não aconteceu na semana em que fomos. No nosso caso, melhor olhas outras opções, pois não estou disposta a gastar horrores em móveis enquanto estiver morando de aluguel.

Nesta noite recebemos uma noticia maravilhosa! A proprietária de um apartamento em Laval que amamos aceitou alugar o ap. para nós!

We were in Queens for a long time. Queens is confusing, even with the GPS device that was our Lord and Master for the duration of the trip. I've never worked with a GPS device before. This one was pretty handy, but at the same time, confusing. And the smooth, female British voice that we selected could sound anywhere from condescending to downright exasperated depending on how often she was forced to repeat herself. This was her advice: ‘Turn right now. Turn right n--- ...Recalculating. Make a Uuuu-Turn. Make a Uuuu-Turn. ...Recalculating. Turn left, then turn right. Turn left now. Left. Left now! (Sigh.) ...Recalculating. Make a Uuuu-Turn.'

In this way, we eventually emerged from the Bronx and into Connecticut...to sit in a stop-and-start traffic jam all the way through New Haven. But we did make it to Providence in time for our show, and even our most tardy car-full of players burst into the greenroom fifteen minutes before curtain.

Providence is charming; it reminded me of a New England version of Charleston. Unfortunately, I have no photos, because I was too lazy to ever take my camera out of the trunk. We spent Saturday wandering up and down Thayer Street, the commercial district surrounding the Brown University campus in Providence's East Side neighborhood. Thayer Street is lined with colorfully painted, old two-story houses made into cafes, antique shops, hippie-clothing stores catering to students and so forth. There were a lot of young people milling around, and everybody seemed to know each other. The main drag gave onto wide, tree-lined blocks of Victorian mansions with wrap-around porches. As is always the case when New Yorkers venture out of the city, my friends and I were delightfully amazed by the low prices and general friendliness we were met with all through the city.

Around 4:00 p.m., we piled back into the car, switched on the GPS device and headed back to New York. But on the way, we stopped at the Ikea in New Haven.

Now, since I do live in the world, I'd heard all about the Ikea thing - from back when Ikea was the most totally awesome thing ever to now, when mention of Ikea is generally accompanied by an apologetic eye-roll. But until last weekend, I had yet to actually go to one myself.

Here's my interior monologue, which best describes how I experienced my very first Ikea visit:

"Wow, this place is huge! This stuff all looks pretty cool. Okay, I'm ready to eat now.

...Oh. We're shopping. I guess we're going to be shopping for awhile.

Oh, this place is really huge.

Oh, we're really shopping.

Oh, I'm going to be here for a very long time.

...Damn it.

Well. These apartment set-ups all look really great. Maybe I should buy something. What would I buy? What would look good in my apartment? What does my apartment look like?

I can't remember.

I just know it doesn't look like these apartments. My apartment looks like shit.* How do you make something like my apartment look like these apartments look?

I'm not equal to this challenge.

The people who live in these apartments are probably really happy.

These apartments are cheap and cute, and probably what most people would consider good starter-apartment solutions until they get their careers going, and make enough money to have a real, nice house. Whereas for me, these Ikea apartments are like the long-term-goal apartments. If, by retirement, I am living in an Ikea apartment, I will have exceeded my own expectations.

I'm not at all where I should be at 27. I still sleep in a twin bed, have a shower curtain on my window, and nothing on my walls except for a hideous poster of Native Americans that I found in the trash! I should get a couch. And a career. And a car. And a dog. And friends. And a Relationship.

Or maybe just some meatballs. Yes, meatballs will improve matters. And then, we will leave.

Whoa, there's another floor! A whole other floor! Oh, I want all matching dishes! I want all matching dishes to eat breakfast on in the sun in a pretty dress with the whole day ahead of me and appointments and a book to write them all down in that matches my handbag, and colorful cocktails after with good-looking people at a rooftop bar where all the drinks cost $14!!!! I want everything about my life to be entirely different, and I want it all to occur in a color-coordinated, cunningly planned setting!!!! I want to design every, single inch of my life, so it's an appropriate backdrop for the huge, personal successes that will surely follow!!!!!

Or not.

Hell, I can at least buy some new sheets. This way, I don't have to wash my old ones."

And that is what I did - I got red and pink sheets, and I'm very happy with them. And I also got an ice-cube tray that makes ice cubes shaped like tiny liquor bottles. It's not much, but it's a start. And it all cost less than $20 which is the main reason Ikea is so very awesome. I might go again someday, if I ever feel I have things together enough to justify putting some effort into decorating my environment. But frankly, I'm still probably several years (and possibly several cities) away from that point.

And yes, I realize I had more to say about the Ikea than about Providence. What can I say? They've got a great business concept going.

*Roommates, if you read this, our apartment does not really look like shit. It only looks like shit when it's standing next to a precious, little Ikea model, and those models only exist to make ordinary apartments feel bad about themselves anyway.

Και που επέλεξε να μείνει σε τέτοιες περιπτώσεις; Σε ξενοδοχείο; σε φίλο του; στους γονείς του; στο δρόμο; Τϊποτα απο όλα αυτά. Στα ΙΚΕΑ της γειτονιάς του , στο New Jersey, αποφάσισε να μείνει ο Mark για μια ολόκληρη εβδομάδα.

Με τη σύμφωνη άδεια του manager του καταστήματος ο Mark πήρε την κάμερα του και τα ρούχα του και πλέον μένει στο ΙΚΕΑ μεταδίδοντας μας καθημερινά την εμπειρία του μέσα απο το site του marklivesinikea.com Μέχρι στιγμής το μόνο πρόβλημά του είναι οτι τα είδη υγιεινής (νιπτήρες, βρύσες κλπ) είναι όλα διακοσμητικά και δε δουλεύουν.

Ήδη κυκλοφορεί στα καταστήματα ένα demo dvd για pc το οποίο μπορείτε να προσθέσετε στο virtual home σας 60 από τα προϊόντα του ΙΚΕΑ καθώς και μια προσφορά που μπορείτε να αποκτήσετε έπιπλα και προϊόντα ΙΚΕΑ μέσα από το παιχνίδι σε μειωμένες τιμές.

Dus wij naar de winkel om het logeerbed even op te halen. Zo gebeurt. Schoonouders ontmoeten we daar. Dus... de medewerker maakt een bon waar onze aankoop op staat, even afrekenen en ophalen bij het magazijn. Oeps... dat is een groot pakket. Bij de auto aangekomen blijkt onze veronderstelling dan toch niet helemaal te kloppen... het pakket past niet in de auto. Geen nood, we pakken het pakket uit en vervoeren de losse onderdelen. Ok... uitpakken in de garage. Passen, meten... helaas! Wat nu? Enige mogelijkheid is om een aanhanger te huren, dus dat maar gedaan. Helaas was het toevallig even vrijdagavonddrukte en duurde het zo'n drie kwartier voordat dat geregeld was. Nou ja, het heeft wat langer geduurd, maar eindelijk dan toch op weg naar huis... mét het logeerbed. Wij allemaal in de auto van de schoonouders, eigen auto halen we dan op als we de aanhanger terugbrengen.

Dus... thuis alles uit de auto en aanhanger halen en naar binnen brengen. Dus tja, heb jij de sleutel? Uuuh, volgens mij ligt die nog in de auto... bij de Ikea. Ok... uiteindelijk het bed maar in de tuin achtergelaten (gelukkig geen vooruizicht op regen). Bijna 3 uur nadat wij voor het eerst thuis wegreden, reden we eindelijk in de auto weg bij de winkel. Het bed stond nog in de tuin, maar toch maar even eerst wat gaan eten... pfff

Vi var till djuraffären Pets in town som ligger i Gröndal igår. Vi köpte kattsand och fågelmat.
Vi kollade även på fina halsband och koppel. När vi sedan stod vid kassan och betalade fick Chris se ett fint halsband hängades på väggen bakom disken. Han pekade på det och sa något om att ett sådan bör vi ha till hunden sen. Då säger mannen bakom disken/kassan att de har köpt ett likadant till deras hund, och lyfter upp en liten dvärgpinscher-tik. Snacka om att vi blev förvånade! Nu dyker det upp pinnar överallt. Vi berättade självklart att inom några veckor är vår valp klar för att flytta hem till oss osv. Då sa mannen att det är bara att titta förbi om vi har några frågor eller vad som helst. Han sa också att till vintern kommer de få in fler täcken osv. och då har de testat dem på sina hundar, så man kan få lite insider-tips sådär!

Det blev inget badande igår. Vi gick istället och satte oss på en brygga och åt glass och kalengifflar. Det var ganska mysigt. Roligast var när större motorbåtar svischade förbi och stora vågor satte hela bryggan i gungning. Chris tyckte det var mindre kul. Jag vet inte, men han var förmodligen rädd för att bli blöt.

Idag har jag lite Lillebrors-abstinens. Lillebror är ju den lilla hunden som vi varit hundvakt åt några gånger. Jag messade hans matte igår och berättade och ev. så kommer Lillebror vara med mig idag.

Quase todo mundo já deu uma espiada no site da Tok & Stok ou do Etna em busca de um móvel bacana ou de um objeto decorativo diferente para dar um toque especial à casa, escritório ou ambos, no caso de um home-office. Estas lojas são uma espécie de referência no ramo aqui no Brasil, pois o modelo de negócio utilizado por elas é muito prático e completo, mas você sabe onde ele surgiu?

Em 1943 um sueco de 17 anos chamado Ingvar Kamprad, com ajuda de seu tio, fundou a IKEA que é hoje a maior cadeia de lojas de móveis e decoração do mundo e assim como nós brasileiros fazemos com nossas lojas , antes de mobiliar a casa, todo europeu, americano, canadense ou australiano dá uma passadinha na IKEA para ver as novidades e buscar inspiração.

Como já foi dito, o negócio teve início em 1943, mas tratava-se apenas de vendas de objetos pequenos e baratos por catálogo, com algumas canetas, relógios, gravatas e isqueiros enviados por correio. Em 1951, Ingvar notou que seria lucrativo vender móveis de fábricas vizinhas a sua casa, abandonando os produtos menores e em poucos anos (1953), já estava abrindo um showroom, dando acesso aos produtos e gerando a oportunidade de escolha, tendo em conta o custo/benefício. A concorrência não gostou nada do que estava acontecendo, a IKEA se tornava mais popular a cada dia e na tentativa de barrar seu sucesso, outras empresas armaram um boicote, forçando assim, a loja a fabricar seus próprios móveis. A partir daí, o crescimento foi maior do que nunca.

Hoje, o que vemos em lojas como as citadas no início deste texto nada mais é do que uma réplica do modelo criado por Ingvar nos final dos anos 50, mas a IKEA vai muito além disso, seu site traz ambientes jovens, criativos e descontraídos, repletos de produtos bonitos, com soluções de design funcionais e tendências modernas. É impossível visitar sem encontrar nenhum visual que nos atraia. Nas lojas não é diferente, muitos afirmam terem gasto um dia inteiro passeando por lá, entretidos com tanta coisa legal.

Infelizmente não há previsão de abertura de uma IKEA por aqui, seria interessante ter mais uma boa opção deste tipo na hora de deixar a casa habitável, principalmente se eles mantivessem sua política de preços baixos. ; )

Tomorrow is the wedding. I have black sling back heels from Aldo. They have a really thin heel so I'm a bit wobbly on them but they are gorgeous and they were on sale from $90 to $60. Such a deal!

I went shopping at Ikea yesterday. I'm trying to update my room because I still have stuff from when I was 14 and I would like to reflect myself a little more accurately now that I am older. But it may also be that I feel like I'm having a 19 year old life crisis and want to change things around. Anyways this is some of what I got:

It doesn't look like they match at all but for real they look wicked together. I also have the Ikea royal purple silk bed spread and they look really nice with both it, and the new spread. I got a new desk black/brown wood desk and a new picture to hang on my wall. Ikea has this giant Eiffle tower picture and I want it so badly. I love Paris/ anything to do with France, really. The culture/history/etc fascinates me!

Next summer Kathleen, Lex, and Liz want to go to Thailand & Bali.  I don't think I can afford Thailand as it's a 40 day tour and about $4500. I need those 40 days to make money for school and the $4500 in general for school. But I think I could join them afterwards in Bali (Indonesia). It's only 500 a week to stay at the Bali Contiki Resort which is quite reasonable. It is just the flights that would cost the most. However, I think I will get my tax return by then, and my parents have already agreed to give me money for flights for Christmas/Birthday presents so I am pretty much just going to say I'm going to Bali next summer. I was just looking at flight costs and it is really looking do-able. I am so excited. However, Carson and I have been planning to go away somewhere together in the Winter so that is where my first priority for travelling lies. However I think I can afford both if I work hard this year. I love travelling and I would love to see Asia!

Στο Κobe της Ιαπωνίας άνοιξε ένα νέο κατάστημα ΙΚΕΑ και η διαφημιστική εκστρατεία που ακολούθησε ήταν συναρπαστική. Όλα τα τρένα είχα στολιστεί με υφάσματα από το ΙΚΕΑ και το εσωτερικό επίσης με ντεκόρ από έπιπλα. Μια πολύ καλή ιδέα διαφήμισης. Δείτε τις φωτογραφίες

So I get to the grocery store with this reusable bag that I bought like six months ago, and I go to the dish detergent aisle. And instead of grabbing my "usual brand" (read: whatever happens to be cheapest per ounce), I pick up one of those earth-friendly ones and start reading the package. Did you know that most dish soap is petroleum based?!?! Um, I didn't. So even though it was more expensive, I ended up buying it. Because it's not just about saving money on gas, ya know.

Dragen i koppel tillbringade jag två dagar på Ikea. När det hade bestämts vad vi skulle ha fick jag använda mina sista krafter o tankeverksamhet på att stuva in skiten i bilen. Vill ge Ikea ett litet tips, Ni har varit tillräckligt smarta att skaffa en hörna med bollhav där man kan lämna barnen men snälla skaffa CigarrPuffarRum där vi gubbar kan lämnas in o hämtas efter en halv eller hel dag.

Nog av, efter dessa dagar i h-t höll Arne o Xenon en plats till mig på Monks Cafe (himmelriket på jorden om man jämför med Ikea). Fint väder, bord utomhus, japp, cigarrerna kom fram o sällskapet tackade inte nej. Fråga, Monks Cafe har öl från världens alla hörn men de gånger jag varit där har Xenon Rabota bett om tjeckiskt öl. Svar: - det har vi inte...

Vad ska men dricka där? Hoho, finns fortfarande en hel del att välja mellan. Trappistöl en självklarhet, jag brukar även passa på att prova olika veteöl.

Gick förbi Roberts Tobak idag, han hade inte många Cariocas kvar. Kände mig tvungen att plocka med dem hem.

Igår fick vi ett besked som kommer att förändra våra liv för all framtid. Det låter nästan negativt, men det är något oerhört positivt. Vi är båda i extas och bara väntar på att tiden skall gå.
Vissa av er förstår vad jag pratar om, andra har inte en aning. Men inom kort kommer alla som surfar in här få veta.
Jag ska försöka ge bloggen en total make over, ev. byta namn o färger osv.
