A rather nauseous Victor Dunham (Isaiah Washington) hits the head in the Spike Lee-Richard Price Brooklyn slang opera Clockers.

Victor is the straight brother of low-level drug dealer Strike (Mekhi Phifer), whose boss Rodney (Delroy Lindo) has put him in an awkward position.

Price later joined the writing staff of The Wire, where he added flavour to the stories of corner boys and hoppers.

According to the trade Variety, Val Kilmer (The Doors) has joined the cast of director, Werner Herzog’s (Rescue Dawn), remake of the 1992 crime drama BAD LIEUTENANT. To me this is a real interesting project. Nicolas Cage is already aboard in the role of the immoral cop, reprising the very memorable performance of Harvey Keitel in the original. For those who remember the 1992 version, it was released NC-17 and deservedly so. Keitel’s nameless cop was a true degenerate; involved with drugs, gambling and deviant sexual practices who ultimately redeems himself while investigating the rape of a nun. I’m curious as to why Herzog and Cage are attracted to this material only 16 years after Ferrara’s version. Cage has certainly done dark material before in films like Leaving Las Vegas and the underrated 8MM but this is even stronger in content and not very bankable stuff for mainstream audiences. Still I see it as one of the more interesting projects in the current pipeline and I’m sort of looking forward to it. Watch the Trailer

Source: The Hollywood Reporter, ComingSoon.net

Val Kilmer, Fairuza Balk, Jennifer Coolidge, Vondie Curtis Hall, Shawn Hatosy, Denzel Whitaker and Xzibit are joining Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes in Werner Herzog's cop drama Bad Lieutenant, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Shea Wigham, Katie Chonacas (Righteous Kill) and Brad Dourif also are among those who will appear in the update of Abel Ferrara's cult classic.

The original followed the depraved adventures of a corrupt policeman (Harvey Keitel) investigating the rape of a nun. The new film will feature Cage as the titular crooked cop and capture the spirit of the original, with the protagonist's drug intake, accepting sexual favors as bribes and other elements that endeared so many to the 1992 version.

The new film will feature Kilmer as Cage's partner, while Xzibit will play a villain.

It's been awhile since I've seen it but I remember the original BAD LIEUTENANT being excellent. NICOLAS CAGE in the HARVEY KEITEL? I have a hard time picturing that.

Well, its been an eventful couple of weeks. Finished my assignment at Tower Hamlets, had my birthday and fitted in an exhibition, some cinema visits and a gig - entries are being prepared for the last two. I'm looking forward to relaxing for a couple of weeks now before actively seeking anything new, I'll enjoy exploring my new part of the world and there are some other exhibitions and places I'd like to check out.

A week on Saturday I celebrated my triple celebration - my new place, my birthday and being unemployed!! After a exploration around Limehouse and Canary Wharf we hit some pubs and had what I think was a pretty good curry - things were getting sketchy at that point so I can't testify to the food's quality. In any case, many thanks to all my mates who visited and here are some amusing film clips which (Spoliers beware, more on this film below and thank you Neil for my present, it rocks) should stir some dormant memories....

I paid a visit to Tate Modern and had a look at the 'Street & Studio' exhibition that has been praised in the press. It was very good, I gravitated to the Weegee and Diane Arbus photos but my favourite was this which looks like its escaped from a fashion shoot from ID magazine in 1994 - quite remarkably it was actually shot in 1949.

BBC4 are continuing a fine mini season of films from some mainstream and neglected genres - the Western, the British B Movie (which showcased this masterpiece) and this week Courtroom Films. The 90 minute documentaries to accompany the seasons have been pretty good, and I strongly urge you to catch 'The Verdict' which is on this week as it is something of an overlooked treasure with probably Paul Newmans finest performance.

We will also be treated to a documentary on the great Werner Herzog this week as part of the Imagine strand, maybe he can explain his recent exodus to Hollywood and shed some light on the disappointing 'Rescue Dawn' which I reviewed here. More distressing is the mooted remake of 'Bad Lieutenant' which is a great and very challenging film in its own right, of all the projects he could secure why on earth has he opted for this with Nicholas 'Possibly the worst actor in Hollywood' Cage in the title role? Anyway, no I'm not going to link to that scene in the movie (if you've seen it then you'll know what I mean), so here are some clips which may give you a feel for the film.

Staying with the film theme for a change, I am excited to see that the Barbican is hosting a film season on Alex Cox which gives me the opportunity to see one of my favourite ever films on the big screen - 'Repo Man'. It's a shame that Cox has never matched the achievement of his cult debut and some of his recent efforts have been mediocre to say the least. Still, I still haven't got round to catching up with this which is supposed to be good and discussions of this event on some of my favoured film sites have led me to some terrific free downloads of the Moviedrome programme notes which is cool. On the bad news fromt, it appears that Tartan films has finally folded which is a real shame as they are responsible for bringing many superb films to the UK and arguably are most responsible for bringing the phenomenon of Asian J Horror movies to our shores. RIP.

Finally, just to disprove my cold cynical image here is a link that bought a mist to my eyes and rendered my bottom lip all a quiver. All you cool kids who know your way round the Interwebs may have seen this before but it's new to me. If it doesn't activate a tiny spark of shared optimism in our future in an era of sabre rattling in the middle east, global financial holocaust, energy and foot riots coupled with climate catastrophe then nothing will. Even if he is a smug lucky git who has travelled the world. Bastard.

Il sospetto cresce, fino all’esplosione finale.

Synopsis

Ben Gates is back with his crew for another adventure, but this time the stakes are much more personal. Another adventurer has found a piece of historic evidence that links Ben's great great grandfather to the Lincoln assassination. Ben knows it isn't true, but he must begin a series of discoveries in an investigation that leads him to Paris, Buckingham Palace, and even the White House, while simultaneously being chased by mercenaries after the Treasure he seeks to clear his families name.

Review

Sequels are often not as good as their predecessor, but when the original was only moderately good, you expect at least the same from the next one tossed out. Such was not the case with National Treasure: Book Of Secrets. It boasted a phenomenal cast and what turned out to be a pretty compelling plot and script, but none of it was ever really able to translate onscreen.

The soundtrack was just horrific. It's corny and campy style interjected at the wrong moments becoming a distraction rather than adding to the building suspenseful moments. If quieter in the back round playing it may have been less of an obvious negative, but it was so cheesy and so in your face it was impossible to ignore. The compilation of scenes often often didn't flow together. The acting was pitch perfect, with great delivery's for all involved, but often their interactions seemed off from close-up to drawback. This was obviously a flaw by the editor, director, or both. Because of these obnoxious errors it became very difficult to connect with the transpiring events and our main character's.

The most frustrating aspect of those drawbacks is the fact that the story itself was indeed a lot of fun and our actors performances done very well. If more time and care had been taken it had the ability to be just as good as it's original. It's a shame that it wasn't.

Cast

Nicolas Cage as Ben Gates

Justin Bartha as Riley Poole

Diane Kruger as Abigail Chase

Jon Voight as Patrick Gates

Helen Mirren as Professor Emily Appleton

Ed Harris as Mitch Wilkinsin

Harvey Keitel as Agent Sadusky

Bruce Greenwood as The President

There were great performances by everyone involved but Helen Mirren's role as Ben's mom was particularly noteworthy. The chemistry between herself and Jon Voight put Krugers and Cages to shame. Ed Harris playing the bad guy is always fun and Bruce Greenwood as the President was an excellent interpretation. The character's and actor's that played them were outstanding.

Ratings And Suggestions

National Treasure: Book Of Secrets felt like it was quickly rushed together so the filmmakers could capitalize on a sequel so the parallel stories involving the cities of lost gold from Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull and itself would not be released simultaneously. While Book of Secrets beat Indy 4 to the release date, Indy 4 was compiled together in an elegant, love taken fashion whereas Book Of Secrets was not. It was stamped and mailed before it was even finished. It suffers the worst kind of fate of mediocrity in it's ability to have been a much better movie if not rushed. Nonetheless, it was delivered as a mundane film that by it's finale the outcome was no longer even relevant to me. I simply wanted to see the end credits. Book Of Secrets receives 1.5 out of 4 Stars.

(I seem to be on a weird Harvey Keitel kick lately. Rest assured I will not be reviewing Reservoir Dogs, though, because a) we've all seen it, and b) my intense loathing of Quentin Tarantino bars me from it. –S)

Hey, kids!

You know what would be great for Family Movie Night?! Now, little Billy, don't give me that look. We know what happened the last time you chose the video for Family Movie Night. Why, your mother didn't stop weeping for days, and you know how Gramma Jenny feels about those Wiemar-republic era drag queens! Why, it only takes a little encouragement to make her go nipping into the brandy, and we know how Jesus feels about that! Oh, come on, little Becky. Now, we all know you just graduated that liberal arts college up North, but Family Movie Night is always just so much moe enjoyable when the lead characters aren't repressed transsexual migrant workers who are constantly beaten down by the Man! Let's all find a movie we can ALL enjoy!

What's this, Uncle Hershel? "Bad Lieutenant"? Is that like a Star Trek where Data goes on the fritz? Ha-ha-ha! Billy, please stop sighing, it makes Jesus unhappy. Let's read the back! Ooooh, Roger Ebert loves it, and says Harvey Keitel gives "one of the great screen performances in recent years". Well, this movie DID come out in 1992, remember, so it's not ALL that recent, right gang? Hahaha! And yes, Becky, I realize Roger Ebert represents the bourgeoisie in all its laconic squalor. Wow, you sure learned some big words up at that college!

Let's just throw this here disc into the turntable, huh? Or do these fancy things go on the CD player? Haha-haha-ha! Oh, Billy, the more eyeliner you put on the more Jesus smudges it with His tears.

Oh, look! You kids remember, Granpa had a car just like that, and you remember we used to send you kids off to school in JUST those kinds of parochial blazers...oh! Oh, my, he said a dirty word there! And another! Oh my, did he just tell his sons to...well, I'm sure all the dirty parts are out of the way now! Just trying to keep those adults interested, right? Hahahaha!

Um, Uncle Hershel, what's he putting up his nose there?

How do you know that, Billy?

Oh.

Oh, my.

Well, this is...different. What did you say the rating on this movie was again, Uncle Hershel? NC-17? You don't say!

Well, aren't those the cutest girls, taking their dad's car out for a spin without him knowing! Wait, what did Harvey Keitel ask that girl? Why...what's she doing with her tongue there?

How do you know that, little Becky?

Well, those ladies are certainly...naked...and...OH! Oh, dearie me, Mr. Keitel! Well, it's nice to know that some actors don't let a little thing like modesty stand in the way of...um...their...part. Role! Their role!

Anyone for cake? Anyone?

Well, Jesus, Mary and Joseph, literally! Ah, finally, some wholesome activity in the sanctity of a house of God, and...Oh Goodness! That's...oh, that's a nun? Oh, my! I see London, I see France, I see....oh, um. My. So that's what nuns look like...there. My, that's...um, shocking...and...sacrilegious. Daring! Yes! Say, what's that one...ruffian...doing on her back?

How do you know that, Gramma Jenny?

Is anyone sure they don't want cake? Or coffee! We have coffee!

[45 minutes of silence later]

I'm gonna fuck a bitch and shoot some smack. Any of you whorefuckers mess wid' me, I'm gonna blow ya fuckin' brains out, yoo hear me? YOO FUCKIN' HEAR ME, MUTHAFUCKAS?

And save me summa that fuckin' cake

FINAL SCORE: 3 out of 5 bullets. Despite being in the action section, yet again, this was not an action movie. More of a melodrama, really, I guess, with a lot of swearing. If, however, you want copious amount of drugs, corruption, nudity (oh could I have lived my life perfectly content without seeing Harvey Keitel's trouser snake), sex, and good old-fashioned Nun Rape (as opposed to Nouvelle Nun Rape, which sounds like a great metal band), this is your movie! Also if for some bizarre sad reason you want to know the exact play-by-play of the '92 Mets vs. Dodgers season, this is a movie not to miss!

Incidentally, was Harvey Keitel ever young? He's gotten progressively older, but I've never seen him looking younger than 50. It's like he has an aging portrait hidden in the attic, but he never thought to get it painted until middle age.

The first National Treasure was a really fun movie with lots of riddles and mystery. The second National Treasure: Book of Secrets was the same movie, but Nicolas Cage looked like a old woman. Seriously - his face and his hair just were not right. He must have had work done before he started filming this. It was bad enough to be distracting. There was nothing new to this movie except that we get to meet Ben's mother [Helen Mirren, whom I love]. If you loved the first one, this one might be worth a rental, but if you're not in the mood to see the same thing twice, skip it. 2 out of 5.

Add'l Info: Released: Dec 21, 2007 • Runtime: 124 minutes • Rated PG for some violence and action

Agravantes: Nicolas Cage, Nicolas Cage, Nicolas Cage.
