I’ve had the pleasure, and displeasure of working for others. For those entrepreneurs that have never needed to earn extra income by working for others, I commend you. For those who have never experienced “the boss from hell,” and even for those who have, it is important to understand the six different leadership styles identified by Daniel Goleman in his article “Leadership That Gets Results” published in the March-April 2000 Harvard Business Review. Goleman identifies the six leadership styles as: Coercive, Authoritative, Affiliative, Democratic, Pacesetting, and Coaching.

In the first part of this two part post I will begin with the two negative leadership styles; two leadership styles we must learn to avoid and try to eliminate, the Coercive and Pacesetting leadership styles.

Coercive – A coercive leader essentially uses scare tactics to produce results. The coercive leadership style brings a quick fix, but disrupts the organizations climate when doing so. Carl Icahn’s reputation as a corporate raider is an example of a coercive leader. He purchases distressed businesses, demands immediate compliance to his recommendations, cleans house, adds value, then sells off; the remaining employees are left scared, looking over their shoulders, and a negative working environment is created. We will never have a positive working environment with happy employees by using coercive leadership. Through your entrepreneurial journeys avoid the coercive leadership style or you may find yourself helpless, literally.

Pacesetting – “The hallmarks of the pacesetting style sound admirable. The leader sets extremely high performance standards and exemplifies them himself. He is obsessive about doing things better and faster, and he asks the same of everyone around him. He quickly pinpoints poor performers and demands more from them. If they don’t rise to the occasion, he replaces them with people who can. You would think such an approach would improve results, but it DOESN’T. In fact, the pacesetting style destroys climate.” - Goleman

The pacesetter’s biggest weakness is his/her inability to clearly state guidelines; if you don’t know how to complete the job, then you must be the wrong person for it attitude. Also, pacesetting leaders tend to lack feedback for his/her employees; the pacesetter believes the job can always be done better. My impression of a pacesetter is a leader who thinks he/she is the best person in the world at what he/she does, and is scared to give guidance in fear that someone else might some day be better than him/her. Pacesetters also attribute past and present employee successes to himself/herself, and not to the employee. I had the displeasure of working for a pacesetting leader once; an experience which killed my morale. An experience I cherish, because his leadership style pushed me to leave his company to start my own. If you want to retain intelligent high value employees, provide guidance and avoid the pacesetting leadership style.

To be continued…

Positive leadership styles coming soon

Analysis of Innovation

2thinknow Innovation Cities are assessed using the Hire Innovation Loop model comprising these 3 segments: Inspiration of Ideas, Implementation of Ideas and Access to Markets.

2008 Rankings of Boston as an Innovation City have not yet been finalised as at August 8th.

2008 Innovation City Notes

However Boston is not expected to change substantially in 2008.

What's more unlike most US cities it is a walking, bicycling city with (mostly) edible food. Boston's key strengths are the depth and breadth of its intellectual insititutions. Boston also is more directly connected to Europe than most US cities.

As the US food supply, and health issues of fast food become increasingly toxic, the food supply becomes a quantifiable quality of life issue for US citizens. Interesting books such as "the Ethics of What We Eat" detail these issues.

Boston food is not quite on par with US cities such as San Francisco, and nowhere near German standards, but this city is one of the choices that involve fewer cultural sacrifices for Europeans.

Whilst with the many consulting firms and business approach of Americans, holding the dual benefit of easier implementation of ideas.

In the end though the intellectual giant that is Harvard is entwined with Boston, and Boston owes its high ranking partly due to the creative and inspiration leadership of Harvard & MIT, amongst other institutions.

A complete analysis of Boston against the 3 segments of inspiration, implementation and market access is available in the Global Innovation Review.

Nicholas Carr is a management guru on the forefront of business ideas concerning technology. His most famous piece, "Does IT Matter?" featured in Harvard Business Review, asserted at the height of companies investing in Information Systems technology that IT would move toward commoditization and could not provide competitive advantage.

Carr recently inked "Is Google Making Us Stoopid?" Published in The Atlantic, Carr asks if the nature of the Internet - short posts, aggregated info, fast results, immediate gratification - can actually change the way humans think. He worries that his ten years online have rendered him intellectually lazy and incapable of delving into long, complex writing and ideas.

I have recently felt pressure to shorten blog posts because people don't have the patience to read through all the content. You can see in my marketing blog how I tried to put a few quick thoughts in short posts, especially concerning Steve Ballmer's failed Microsoft bid for Yahoo!. However, because I was trying to limit the quantity, I only covered a small facet of the story and that facet has been rendered irrelevant by the developments of the last month. I always felt that, if I am going to write at all, I should really dig in and examine all sides of a story, as I think I did concerning MySpace vs. Facebook. I am old school and, although I am blogging now, I don't think I have been corrupted yet. In grad school, I got my news from the daily New York Times - the hard copy. I read most of the articles in the World and Business sections. I read books also. But since starting my new job, most of what I read is online. I may develop the habits Carr mentions. And I feel the pressure to keep this post short. I may be joining the trend after all. Goodbye now...

Although I've always been aware of finances, the last two years or so I've spent a good chunk of time learning about personal finances. I took a budgeting class, read parts of a couple books, and listened to Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University CDs. Recently, my husband's interest in this subject has grown tremendously. His current topic of conversation is a Harvard professor's speech. It's quite interesting, especially the comparisons between 1970 and 2005. We've gone from one-income households that save to two-income households that have a negative savings rate.
Hi Everyone!

I hope you have all had a very good weekend. It looks like Monday nights
is going to be a more likely night to send out the windows. Many thanks
for all your words of encouragement and for placing interested friends,
relatives, and colleagues on the list. This is a drop in the sea as we
say in Persian, but I am sure there is saying in every language to the
effect that every drop counts. So, here we go again, Window number 7 is
waiting for you.

Current Issues:

* How could there be any other current issue when Mr. Ahmadinejad is
visiting the U.S.? During such visits, Iranians usually hold their
breath for the next inflammatory remark he will make. If you are
among those who get really irritated -- and I don't blame you at
all -- just remember that President Bush included Iran in "The
Axis of Evil" when President Khatami was in office and did his
best to start a "dialogue between civilizations." What the
American media carefully overlooks is that much of the world --
perhaps due to Mr. Ahmadinejad's criticism of American foreign
policy -- has shown him a fairly receptive attitude. 118 member
states of the Non-Aligned countries issued a statement in support
of Iranian nuclear technology at the end of their 14th summit last
week (September 18, 2006).

* Here is what Mr. Ahmadinejad said in a U.N. press conference
(September 21, 2006), answering the question "What can Iran do to
assure the international community that the country is not making
a nuclear bomb?" He responded: "The IAEA has published many
reports. Numerous reports saying that they do not see any
violation of the treaty requirements of NPT by the Iranian
government. ... I am at a loss, in understanding what else we need
to do, to provide guarantees. I have said to the dear gentleman
here. That there is no provision in the NPT that says. That we do
not have the right-- that, perhaps it says-- that we need the vote
or the confidence of the U.S. government to have peaceful nuclear
technology. There is no such provision. ... Should Iran shut down
every technological development? In the biological field? And the
medical field? And the chemical field? Because, in any of these
fields, there's a possibility of dual usage. Possibly a chemical
bomb. So when we speak of justice. We mean that everyone is equal.
When we act within the framework of international law and follow
the provisions of the NPT. ... It's very important to make these
nuclear facilities program a transparent one ... there's no need
to hide such development. ...we've actually given information to
the IAEA. We've invited international world community to visit our
facilities. Now, we are told, by some, that, "You have to gain our
trust and confidence." But we don't have any criteria developed
for confidence-building, as such. It may take a hundred years or
more for you to gain confidence, in what we do. What are we
supposed to do given the context that in the past 27 years. You've
demonstrated so much hostility towards our nation. ..." (Thank you
Amir Ali Companieh for forwarding the whole interview).

* Last week theatrical events at the U.N. were also interesting to
watch. Mr. Chavez (whose personal attack on Mr. Bush is - in my
opinion - unprofessional for a head of a state) received a
standing ovation. The American media showed little alarm at the
world's anti-American sentiments and explained the support
for Chavez and for Ahmadinejad to be the result of these two
countries large oil reservoirs. This hypothesis is simplistic and
disrespectful of world opinion. And it can be tested. Next time
the Saudi Arabian representative speaks at the U.N., watch the
reception he gets. We need -- in my opinion -- to be concerned
with the fact that these two politicians (Chavez & Ahmadinejad)
get away with much simply because of their outspoken criticism of
U.S. foreign policy.

Science

* Fortunately, the Iranian President returned home, and we can now
attend to more interesting matters. A very young Iranian American
scientist Nima Arkani Hamed has been in the news lately (I heard
about him thanks to my friend Behfar Dianati). Nima Arkani Hamed,
currently a professor of physics at Harvard is a leading scientist
in particle physics and string theory. For a short biography and
reference to his work click on:
http://www.anvari.org/iran/Famous_Iranians/Nima_Arkani-Hamed.html
(It looks like I should keep a regular section on Iranian
Americans).

Art/Culture

* How about a cookbook for a starter? I would recommend any cookbook
by Batmanglij, particularly Persian Cooking for a Healthy Kitchen

http://www.amazon.com/gp/explorer/0934211671/2/ref=pd_lpo_ase/102-6161793-5949765
Do scroll down and look at two other titles: New Food for Life and
-- particularly if you are vegetarian like me -- Silk Road
Cooking: A Vegetarian Journey by the same author. You will not be
disappointed.

* No, I am not resorting to cookbooks because I have run out of
subjects. Just trying to keep this exchange healthy and wholesome.
Since we are on a touristic subjects, let me tell you that Iran is
trying hard to tell the world that it is visitable. Beautiful
hotels are being built around the country. I have chosen one that
is not just beautiful but rather unusual. A traditional building
in a mountainous location in the North Eastern province of
Azerbaijan (close to the city of Tabriz) has been converted into a
hotel. Click here (Mountain Hotel--Tabriz) to see!

* The category we have not approached at all is Persian music.
Most people are not sure if musical activity has continued in
Iran after the ascendancy of the Islamic Republic in 1979. Well,
attempts were made by extremist groups to curtail music and other
performing arts in the early 1980s. However, it did not get very
far. If anything, it made music a hot topic. Most music classes
keep long wait lists. Persian traditional music remains very
popular. I will at some point introduce you to some contemporary
master musicians of classical Persian music. In this window,
however, I would like to concentrate on the two kinds of music
that most of you would not expect to find in Iran. First, the
Iranian Symphony Orchestra is alive and well and performs
regularly. Last August, it performed in Germany (amid speculation
in the western media that the Islamic republic will not allow the
musicians to perform in the west):

* Even more surprising for non-Iranians is to hear about: modern
Iranian Rock and Pop bands. To read a report on that, click on:
http://www.flyglobalmusic.com/fly/archives/africamiddle_east_features/the_young_iran.html
be sure to scroll down to get to web addresses of individual
groups. Arian is among the most popular Iranian Pop groups and has
two women in the band. Last May, when I was in Iran, I saw at
least 8 or 9 CDs by them in music stores. Here is their web page.
Do click on English for more pictures: http://www.arianmusic.com/

Visual Delight

* And we will follow our tradition of visiting some contemporary
Iranian painters' studios before closing Window number 7. Here
are three delightful Iranian women painters and samples of their
works:

First, Nadimeh Abdollahi (b. 1980)
http://www.caroun.com/Painting/IranPainting/NadimehAbdollahi/NadimehAbdollahi.html

The second artist is Sahar Seyedi (b.1972)
http://www.caroun.com/Painting/IranPainting/SaharSeyedi/SaharSeyedi.html

And finally, Miranda Ansari (b. 1971)
http://www.caroun.com/Painting/IranPainting-01/MirandaAnsari/MirandaAnsari.html

I wish you all a very a good week.

From time to time, we'll throw out an "Idea of the Day" culled from sources here in Arizona and elsewhere. The following idea was highlighted in an August 5, 2008 Arizona Republic article, "Car-sharing service now in downtown Phoenix," by Kerry Fehr-Snyder. Here's what it's all about:

The Valley's only car-sharing program expanded to Arizona State University's downtown Phoenix campus Monday. Zipcar has been operating exclusively at ASU's main campus in Tempe since November, when it bought competitor Flexcar. That company brought the service to ASU's main campus in September. Zipcar is moving one of its vehicles, a four-door Toyota Yaris sedan, from its 10-car fleet in Tempe to the downtown Phoenix campus, as classes for the 2008-09 academic year start Monday. ASU is the only Zipcar location in Arizona. The company launched in 2000 at Central Square in Cambridge, MA, halfway between MIT and Harvard with a dozen green Volkswagen Beetles. "It started out with very early adopters who gave community and environmental reason for wanting to use the service," said company spokeswoman Kristina Kennedy. "Now it's really hitting the mainstream."

Zipcar has partnered with dozens of universities, including Georgetown, Columbia, the University of Michigan, and the University of Chicago. Its network includes more than 5,000 vehicles in 50 U.S. cities plus the United Kingdom. The service is aimed at students, faculty and staff who either don't own a car or don't want to bring one to campus but want short-term use of a vehicle. The company charges university members who are at least 18 years old a membership fee of $35 per year plus $9 per hour or $66 per day to use a car. That compares with a daily rental rate of about $70 a day for a similar vehicle with a car-rental company. [Note: To read the full article, click here.]

Haha, so I cam across this on Photoshelter and it made me laugh. Hahaha. Apparently Harper's Bazaar thought this was an amazing idea, and I agree. Haha! They got some dude and Tyra Banks to role play as the Obamas in their September issue and it looks awesome. I don't care what anyone says, Tyra is hot as hell and she can do whatever the hell she wants to do and def does what she wants better than those out their constantly ridiculing her. The two (Banks and model dude) look nothing like Michelle and Barack themselves, but a point is definitely made, if you're gonna be President and First Lady, why not also be FASHION! Haha. I love saying things like "FASHION" and "CATWALK" aloud. It's hilarious. People immediately become uncomfortable and awkward! And sometimes they RUN a little. hahaha. Sometimes I say it loudly while walking around Bedford Avenue/Williamsburg and all the "hip"-sters get all self conscious and shit and start to fix their unwashed hair and wipe their shiny faces..uber funny. Anyway, I have gone on a huge tangent.

Here are some pictures:

It was 4 PM, and we were standing beside our car on the lawn in front of Amy’s dorm at Heifetz

It was 4 PM, and we were standing beside our car on the lawn in front of Amy's dorm at Heifetz. We were eating doughnuts.

My mom and I had traveled over nine hours from Ithaca to Wolfeboro-- including an unintended hour-long detour to Saratoga ("Hey, it's Lake Luzerne!")-- Amy had been waiting for us nearly as long, we had discussed drumlins and primitivists and God, we both heard some sort of female country singer performing in the engine of the car, and now we were all standing around eating doughnuts. I couldn't stop laughing.

Except eventually I did.

------

We stayed at my mom's friend's three-Steinway two-cat house in Lexington, and we were ultimately headed to Boston so Amy could court potential new violas, and since Cambridge is right in between and I am an incoming high school senior, of course we had to visit Harvard.

It was mostly a useless excursion, actually, since there isn't much going on in Harvard on a summer Sunday morning, so I'll probably visit again when there are actually classes.

But I got some nice photos: of giant lenses...

... and sisters.

We were at the Museum of Fine Arts for about three hours but nonetheless only able to see basically the American and European galleries. Plus my feet were already quite sore from all the walking. I really enjoyed it though; there is something soothing about a building devoted entirely to looking at art.

We also visited the museum store and found a disturbing toy.

The tag reads: "I'm Van Gogh. MY EAR COMES OFF! Give it to someone you LOVE!" Warning: this toy is not suitable for children.

Next we stopped at the Quincy Market, where we ate lunch and took refuge from the sporadic but heavy rain.

Amy and my mom also enjoyed stopping in Crate & Barrel to ogle expensive houseware, which I found somewhat less fascinating aside from the photographic opportunities.

After passing the graves of famous colonial people, we came to the Boston Common, where we commenced our epic quest to find the statue of the ducks inspired by that famous work of literature, Make Way for Ducklings. (That Wikipedia article is pretty interesting, actually.)

We also drank lemonade-- lemonade that I didn't have to squeeze!-- and looked at the scenery, when it wasn't raining. Oh, and there were real ducks too. And the famous swan boats! And real swans.

We had already given up on the statues and were walking around the perimeter of the park en route to the car when we spotted them. Satisfied, we sat on a damp bench and took them in. They were, understandably, crawling with small children.

Even so, some larger children got a chance to play as well.

In the evening we were driving past the "Fresh Pond Mall" in Cambridge when I caught sight of... Whole Foods (=dinner)! And more importantly, a movie theater showing WALL•E, which was thoughtful and hilarious and adorable and everything promised. It was a good movie and a good way to end a day that was essentially spent walking.

Monday morning saw Amy doing her viola thing for three hours while my mom and I walked around neighborhoods with beautiful wrought iron railings and intriguing graffiti.

Finally, we gave up on a proposed Vermont outing (mom and I had already visited Wilmington en route to New Hampshire and gotten lots of maple syrup and chocolate) and came home.

I just reread this entry and it is unusually dull and picture-heavy, which I guess you'll just have to deal with because I have other things to do.

At every life stage there are others a season ahead of you who could tell you the truth about "that which you are about to enter." But if they did, you wouldn't believe them.

Before preschool, would you have believed that your mother really was going to remember to come pick you up?

Before kindergarten, would you have believed how strong the smell of the throw-up removal product would be?

Before elementary school, would you have believed that some kids will be picked to be safety patrols and you might not be one of them?

Before middle school, would you have believed how many times you were going to hear Stairway to Heaven at "make-out parties" (assuming you were born around 1960 as I was)?

Before high school, would you have believed that what you did on the first day (and every day after) would go on your permanent record and determine your future trajectory? Or so they said.

Before college, would you have believed that you weren't the only smart kid/yearbook editor/most likely to succeed arriving on campus?

Before graduation, would you have believed that you would have many careers and not just the one that you imagined?

Before marriage, would you have believed that you would receive that many toasters or that you could wake up that many mornings with the same person (equally hard to believe!)?

Before children, would you have believed that you and your spouse would find trips to Ikea to be satisfactory, even thrilling, dates?

Before middle-age, would you have believed that your children were not all going to be on the travel soccer team and go to Harvard? And that that would be okay, even preferable.

Before your own parents died, would you have believed that you didn't yet think of yourself as a real grown-up?

Before retirement, would you have believed that you would have been able to buy your own gold watch long ago and that the cookies at the retirement party would be bought and not homemade?

Before the nursing home, would you have believed that you don't recognize the face in the mirror?

Before death, would you have believed that this is only a shadow of what is to come?

It's hard to believe!

In a lawsuit one judge describes as a "blood feud," three fellow Harvard students claim Zuckerberg fleeced their idea after they hired him to code a social-networking site they were creating.

In April, another classmate, Aaron Greenspan, filed a petition to cancel Facebook's trademark, claiming he invented an online facebook months before Zuckerberg. Greenspan, who has compiled reams of e-mails chronicling his months of communication with Zuckerberg, bristles at equating the Facebook prodigy with Microsoft's founder

well, this is the guy who brought us Facebook - the guy who brings a lot of good for other people's relationship but not into his own.

PS: semua informasi dari majalah Rolling Stone Indonesia (kutipan dari Rolling Stone pusat). damn I love this magazine sooooo much!

How can you build a solid career for the long haul? It’s hard to think ahead more than a few years

How can you build a solid career for the long haul? It’s hard to think ahead more than a few years, but unless you plan to retire early (which is not a bad option), you’ll probably need to work for 40 to 50 years, so choices you make now can affect the rest of your working life.

A few years ago I was offered a promotion into general publishing management. My friend, an older American bloke with a masters' degree from Harvard in something seriously obscure and scientific counselled me against the move.

The logic behind his thinking remains sound today. Basically, he said the world is full of general managers – it’s another way of saying ‘semi-skilled person in a dark suit’. General managers are a commodity. You can get them by the busload. On the other hand, experienced editors and publishers in chino pants and rugby shirts are relatively rare.

During downturns, less skilled workers are first out of the door. General managers typically go long before lawyers, accountants and knowledge workers.

Specialist skills, no matter how obscure, always have currency. Someone, somewhere will need your talents. Clearly it’s important to keep up with developments in your particular field – there’s not a lot of work for typewriter repair experts these days – but the skills learnt fixing IBM golf-balls translate readily to modern areas.

Knowledge workers are by definition specialists. Most employers will willingly pay handsomely for your expertise and those skills can often be sold on the open market if you go down the freelance or consultant route. But there will also be pressures to take up more general positions as you climb through a company's ranks. In some cases the financial rewards for taking up these positions will be very tempting.

So I spent the last weekend in Boston. I stayed at the very enjoyable Inn at Harvard. I was reminded several times by the women staying at the hotel of the female players in the public radio game show Says You! That was show actually one of my early influences in choosing the field of computational linguistics. At least it was the first place I heard the term. On my job search, I have been asked the question many times: "Why NLP/computational linguistics?" I try to give a short version, because I don't want to bore anyway and I tend to ramble when my stories get too long. So here is the dirt.

I was going to school for my BS in computer science and one of the requirements was a social science elective. I thought anthropology sounded cool, or at least cooler than the sociology and psychology offerings. In the course of the class we hit on the topic of anthropological linguistics and the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis. In a very succinct and incomplete nutshell, the SW hypothesis states that language shapes the sorts of things we normally think about. Not necessarily preventing us from thinking about certain things, but just changing the things that we devote the most mental resources to. I thought this was a really cool idea and decided to take some linguistics classes. After several such classes, I knew I was in love with linguistics but didn't see a way to actually support a family on it. And by family, I mean two anorexic chipmunks through a short winter.

It was already becoming clear to me in my linguistics class that there was a lot of this stuff you could handle with a computer program. The brain is just a different sort of hardware, one possibly hardwired for language use. I figured there had to be a combination of computer science and linguistics. Right around the same time I was having that thought, I heard a letter from a computational linguist being read on Says You! (or was it a caller?). In any case, it was like a bomb went off in my head and I knew what I wanted to do. I started looking for grad schools, the best I got into was CMU, and the rest is history.

I didn't go to any breweries in Boston, unfortunately, aside from the John Harvard's Brew House in Harvard Square. That was decent, but nothing to write home about. Oddly, though, I did write home about it, texting and tweeting friends, my sisters, wife, and mother with pictures of the beer. Sitting alone in a bar in a strange city, what can I say. I had an offer for a tour earlier in the day, but there was the threat of rain and I fell asleep for many hours, screwing that opportunity up. The bed in that hotel had a soporific effect, which I guess should make some bedmaker somewhere happy. I also saw The Dark Knight and Wanted. The former was infrickincredible. I was blown away by the nonstop goodness of this movie. I got to see Wanted for free because they screwed up the beginning of TDK and the movie was very very slightly tilted the whole time. After a short while it wasn't very noticeable to me. That didn't stop me from taking the free ticket. Wanted was ok-ish. What I wanted was a less predictable storyline. The action was great, and even though it was fantastical (which I have no problem with), I once or twice couldn't suspend disbelief.

And now for some pictures.

Ed. Note: Don’t like ESPN’s Prestige Rankings? Provide your comment on how to improv

Ed. Note: Don't like ESPN's Prestige Rankings? Provide your comment on how to improve them here. We're going to take this information and create a new set of rankings based on additional factors (and getting rid of the moronic NIT appearance = NCAA appearance (1 point) criterion).

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that ESPN was trying to fill the dead space between the NBA Finals and the Olympics with yet another list. Normally I wouldn't have even bothered to look at it because ESPN's lists have been getting progressively more ludicrous (hitting its peak--or nadir--when John Hollinger put Dwayne Wade's 2006 "Fall down 7 times, shoot 14 free throws" performance above every single one of Michael Jordan's masterpieces). However, when I noticed that ESPN was trying to rank the most prestigious programs for college basketball in the 64-/65-team era, I was intrigued and figured it was worth some analysis.

Your #1 team of the era

The first thing I always do when looking at any list is to see the scoring system used and ESPN sure picked an interesting system. I'll break it into segments with some analysis:

• National title … 25
• Title game loss … 20
• National semifinal loss … 15
• Elite Eight loss … 10

- All four of these things seems pretty reasonable. I think that most fans would value the post-season performances in a way that is pretty close to the points awarded although it seems like a Final 4 berth is considered a great accomplishment for any program (even for the Duke's and North Carolina's of the college basketball world). I probably would have bumped up the national title, title game loss, and national semifinal loss by 5 points to give a 10 point spread between an Elite 8 loss and a national semifinal loss.

• Best W-L record in conference's regular season … 5
• 30-plus wins in a season … 5
• Sweet 16 loss … 5

- This is where the scoring starts to get questionable. I'm assuming the "Best W-L record in conference's regular season" is lawyerspeak for regular season conference champion. I'm glad that ESPN has decided that the America East regular season champion deserves more points for their in-conference performance than the regular season runner-ups in the ACC, Big East, and SEC. The 5 points for the 30-plus win season may seem like a lot, but in fact they are very rare (Duke leads with 9 such seasons and I could only count/remember 16 programs with any 30-win seasons since the start of the 1984-85 season) so that seems reasonable (as does the 5 points for a Sweet 16 loss although 16 programs achieve are awarded this each season while approximately the same number have achieved it for a 30-win season during the entire era). My main question with the 5-point awards is if they really consider all regular season conference titles the same as it is easier to win certain titles than others. One interesting note about this methodology is that Princeton with 10 regular season Ivy League titles is awarded 50 points with this methodology while Duke with 9 30-plus win seasons is only awarded 45 points for that feat (ignoring the fact that Duke probably won the regular season conference title most of those years).

• Conference tournament title … 3
• AP first-team All-American … 3
• Losing in NCAA second round … 3

- I'm assuming that the Ivy League regular season champ automatically gets the 3 points for winning the conference tournament title since they don't have a post-season tournament. This only further skews the points Princeton and UPenn get in this system as they receive 80 points and 96 points respectively for their Ivy League titles not to mention the 20-win seasons they racked up beating up on Cornell, Columbia, Harvard, and Brown. I'm perfectly fine with the AP 1st-team AA points as at most 5 teams a year will have a player earn that distinction. Perhaps they should have thrown in a National POY bonus as that player is the one who usually defines the season (Ralph Sampson, Christian Laettner, etc.). Likewise, I'm in agreement with the 3 points for the 2nd round NCAA tournament loss.

• Player in top 10 of NBA draft … 2
• NCAA first-round win as a 12-16 seed … 2
• NIT title … 2
• AP second-team All-American … 2

- This is where it starts to get really weird. Let's get the reasonable things out of the way first. Top 10 pick worth 2 points? Ok. That seems fine even if the draft was dominated by high schoolers and Euros for a few years. In the future, the one-and-done rule might make this benefit the schools that are willing to take the one-and-done guys even if it does hurt their APR. That is unless those guys start going to Europe. Cinderella getting 2 points for a 1st-round upset? Fine with this too even if we will all remember the Hampton upset of Iowa State more than we will remember the annual 5-12 upsets. AP second-team AA worth 2 points? Ok with this one too even if I think once you start getting to the 2nd team the players selected start getting more dependent on the voters. I'm too lazy to check this out (perhaps rtmsf can do it), but I'd be willing to venture there is a lot more variation in the guys selected to the 2nd team by various publications/groups than there is with the 1st team. Now for the crazy one. . .Awarding 2 points for a NIT title? Maybe in the 1950s, but today winning the NIT only makes you the butt-end of every more successful team in your conference. How many message board threads have trolls made mocking the 65th (now 66th) best team in country? I'll admit that the NIT champs would probably beat the 13-16 seeds most of the time, but is there really any pride in being the small fish (mediocre team) in the big ponds (power conference) that can beat up on the plankton (13-16 seeds)? I'd give the NIT champ 1 point overall, which leads into the next big problem. . .

• 20-29 wins in a season … 1
• NCAA tournament berth … 1
• Postseason NIT berth … 1
• AP third-team All-American … 1

- Let's get the easy ones out of the way. No problems here with the 20-29 wins or AP 3rd team AA getting 1 point. I would probably differentiate between 20-24 wins, which is usually a solid season, and 25-29 wins, which usually will put you into consideration for a top 4 seed if you're from a power conference. Like I said before the further down the AA list you go, the more variation you will have by publication/group, but it's not really worth arguing about for 1 point. The thing worth arguing about is giving the same number of points for a NCAA tournament berth and a postseason NIT berth. To borrow an over-used phrase from John McEnroe, "You cannot be serious!" While I recognize that in this system the NIT team can only receive 2 points from the tournament (if they win), it is ridiculous to even consider invitations to the 2 tournament similar when the entire selection special is based on camera crews camping out in rooms with bubble teams to see if they got into the NCAA tournament. Maybe the ESPN stat whizzes have access to different camera feeds than I do, but it seems like the players, coaches, and families are happier when they get into the NCAA tournament than when they find out they are going to the NIT (even if Madison Square Garden is a slight upgrade from Boise, Idaho--unless we're talking NBA). That's just one man's interpretation of the reactions I see although I could probably point out that a few years ago Georgetown declined an invitation to the NIT because they wanted to give their players more time to study for exams. . .in March. I wonder why Georgetown didn't turn down its #2 seed this year. Do John Thompson III and the Georgetown AD not care about those same exams any more?

• NCAA first-round loss to a 12-16 seed … -2
• Losing season … -3
• Ban from NCAA tournament … -3

- No problem with the first two although I wonder if a losing season is counted against you if you have it expunged from your record and throw your long-time assistant coach under the bus? Also, I'd consider a 15-16 season a disappointment while I would consider 8-20 a complete embarrassment, so I'd probably make the less than 10-win season a significantly bigger penalty. I think the NCAA tournament ban should be a much larger penalty in this scoring system as the public (and press) reaction tends to be pretty bad (see below).

>> Minimum 15 seasons in Division I
** Ties are broken by overall winning percentage since the 1984-85 season

- After all the issues with the scoring system, I'm not going to complain about these minor qualifiers and tiebreakers. Both of them seem reasonable and none of the top 50 teams were tied.

Now that we've looked the methodology it's time to pick apart the rankings to see what ESPN got right and what they screwed up. Duke is the run-away winner as even the most ardent Duke-hater (feel free to chime in here rtmsf) would agree that Coach K's Blue Devils have been the most dominant program of the era even if their results have been underwhelming the past few years. The Blue Devils are followed by the Jayhawks in 2nd and the Tar Heels in 3rd. I'm not going to argue much with this although I would have UNC in 2nd just because I consider Kansas a team that historically underperforms in the tournament (Mario Chalmers' shot and Danny and the Miracles not withstanding). Now onto the rankings I am utterly confused by.

Overated:
- UNLV: 8th?!? I loved Jerry Tarkanian's Runnin' Rebs, who may have been one of the best college teams ever even if they lost/threw the 1991 national semifinal against Duke, but there is no way this has been the 8th most prestigious program in the country over the past 20+ years just like Memphis isn't in that category. ESPN provides a pretty clear summary of why UNLV shouldn't be in the top 10: "2 NCAA sanctions; 10 coaches since 1984-85; 0 NCAA tourney wins between 1992 and 2007". I'd keep UNLV in the top 20, but they definitely don't belong in the top 10 with that track record.
- Xavier: The Muskeeters (at #17) have a nice Atlantic-10 program, but the fact that they have never made a Final 4 should automatically keep them out of the top 25. The Musketeers are buoyed by 21 combined conference titles, but have not really been a threat in the NCAA tournament having only racked up 15 NCAA tournament wins. Interestingly, Xavier came in 2 spots ahead of Cincinnati even though Xavier is widely considered the red-headed stepchild in the city.
- Temple: I don't mean to sound like Billy Packer ripping on the mid-majors (sorry, if you're not a BCS conference, you're a mid-major in my eyes), but the Owls never made the Final 4 despite five trips there under John Chaney. I think they're a very good program, but like Xavier, Temple shouldn't be in the Top 25 without a Final 4 appearance.
- Murray State: Now this is the point where I rip the little guy. I was absolutely stunned when I saw this one. The Racers always seem to be one of those teams you see at the bottom of the bracket and maybe every once in a while you decide to take a chance on them to pull off the huge upset. Unfortunately, if you're one of those people, you've only been rewarded once (1988 against 3rd-seeded NC State). The Racers piled up the points by dominating the Ohio Valley Conference racking up 22 (or 24 depending on your addition skills) conference titles and twelve 20+ win seasons (thanks to an easy conference schedule). Somehow this manages to put them above Villanova, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, and Wake Forest.

Underrated:
- Maryland: The Terps (28th) are killed by the fact that they play in the ACC and have lost out on a ton of points thanks to playing in the same conference as Duke and UNC. Although Gary Williams hasn't had good teams the past few years, the Terps run especially in the Juan Dixon era should have been enough to propel them into the top 20. How does this program only rank 2 spots ahead of Murray State?
- Utah: I don't think the Utes would be able to move up much higher, but it would be interesting to see how high they would be on this list if they didn't have the misfortune of playing Kentucky so many times in the 1990s. While the Utes benefited playing in a softer conference than some of their peers on the list (SEC and ACC), the Mountain West has been a fairly strong conference in recent years.
- Florida: I'm not sure how much higher the Gators could move up because of their relative lack of success (not counting Lon Kruger's 1994 Final 4 run) before Joakim Noah and company ran off back-to-back titles, but it seems like that alone should be enough to crack the top 20 especially when programs like Xavier and Temple are ranked ahead of them despite not making a single Final 4 appearance. The Gators probably belong in the top 15 although that may be more of a recency effect, but it just seems that there recent run puts them at a level that isn't that much different than UNLV with its run with Larry Johnson.

Other points of interest:
- Coach K's current program (Duke) ranks #1. The program he left (Army) comes in tied for 298th, or as it is more commonly referred to "DFL". Hopefully the Duke athletic department program has a better succession plan in place than Army did when Coach K decides to leave the sidelines.
- I found this rather amusing from personal experience. Boston University comes in at 108th ahead of programs such as Clemson, Providence (with a Final 4 appearance), Washington, and USC.
- In the current SportsNation voting, Kentucky is in the lead (good work out of the Sea of Blue crowd) with Duke in 4th even though they have the most #1 votes (something tells me they were left off a lot of ballots or voted 25th). The three teams I singled out as being overrated in the top 25 were moved down quite a bit. Note: I thought they were overrated even before I saw the online voting.

October 1, 1960 - October 23, 1962: Patrick Bateman is born.
1980: Bateman graduates from Phillips Exeter Academy.
1984: Bateman graduates from Harvard University.
1985: Bateman has a short discussion with his estranged brother Sean about his future.
1986: Bateman graduates from Harvard Business School.
1986-?: From the time of his graduation, through the end of American Psycho, Bateman works at Pierce & Pierce.
1996: Bateman shows up at Victor's club in Glamorama with "strange stains" on his suit.
2000: Bateman enters therapy with a Dr. M. This appears in the American Psycho 2000 e-mails. In these emails, he is divorcing Jean, to whom he has been married for at least five years, and has a son. He has apparently started his own brokerage firm and seems to be even richer than he was in the original novel. His tastes are even more rarefied. His homicidal tendencies (or thoughts) seem to have cooled a little with the birth of his son, but have not disappeared completely.
2003: Ellis kills Patrick Bateman by writing an extraordinary account of the serial killer being trapped in a pier fire. See Lunar Park.

[gallery]The debate still continues (and probabaly will for years) over which is the top Business School in the land. I am still amazed at how often the "big debate" comes up in casual conversation, mostly when people are telling of their MBA admissions journey. While I am certain that I made the right decision in attending the GSB and the amazing classmates that I now call friends constantly reiterate that fact, I always wonder how life would be different had I chosen to live in Boston for two years of grad school.

Would I still be as entrepreneurial? Would I have worked for startups and known that I wanted my own company? Would I be in South Africa right now working at a new Venture Capital Firm?

It is always interesting to me that the Stanford "prestige-factor" (or brand recognition) is not even close to Harvard's in South Africa. From what I can find, there are less than 20 Stanford MBA's currently working in South Africa, but that is the downside of a smaller, more personalized B-school!
