Boken ”Det Gylne Kompasset” forteller oss historien om den elleve år gamle Lyra Belacqua som lever i et parallelt univers likt vårt, men med likevel kraftige forskjeller. I Lyras verden har alle en daimon, nemlig en håndgripelig sjel i form av et dyr som forandrer form gjennom barndommen til et menneske, men som til slutt vil få en fast form som viser hva slags menneske den personen er. Bokens hovedtråd er noe som kalles ”mellomsnittet”. Mellomsnittet vil si å bli separert fra sin daimon, å bli separert fra sin sjel. Det menneske som er igjen blir aldri det samme og er uten en bit av sin sjel.

Lyra er en myndling av Jordan-kollegiet i Oxford. Dette kollegiet har spesialisert seg på å studere eksperimentell teknologi, noe som siden vil føre Lyra inn i større eventyr enn hun kunne drømt om. Jordan-kollegiet kan lære Lyra alt, men Lyra er mye mer interessert i å leke, utforske og løpe rundt i Oxford, men alt dette forandres når hun oppdager at onkelen hennes, Lord Asriel kommer til kollegiet. Lord Asriel er en mektig mann som blir høyt respektert blant sine medmenn. Han har en fryktet personlighet, en voldsom kraft og en svært høy intelligens. Lyra sniker seg opp til det forbudte røykeværelset der alle de betydningsfulle forskerne har møtene sine for å sniklytte til det Lord Asriel har å si til forskerne. Etter hvert oppdager Lyra en mystisk elementærpartikkel funnet langt nord kalt Støv. Støv skal i følge Lord Asriel linke til andre parallelle univers. Men Magisteriet, som kontrollerer nesten alle aspekter av Lyras verden, føler seg svært truet av dette.

Lyras liv blir enda mer interessant når hun får vite at hun skal forlate kollegiet med vakre, eksotiske og unge Mrs. Coulter. Men før Lyra drar, gir rektoren henne en gave: nemlig et ”alethiometer”, designet som et gyllent kompass. Alethiometeret er en symbolleser, det forteller sannheten. Når Lyra skal prøve å tolke det alethiometeret forteller henne, må hun i en dyp transe, nesten underbevisst. Lyra klarer å bruke alethiometeret og finner ut ting som ingen andre enn henne vet, men hun er ikke sikker på HVORDAN hun greier å lese alethiometeret. Alle universers skjebne avhenger av Lyra og hun blir spunnet inn i gamle og dype saker som kun Magisteriet har oversikt over. På sin reise til Norden møter hun hekser, panserbjørner og gøynere.

Denne boken er den første i Philip Pullmans triologi ”Den Mørke Materie” og er en av de få bøkene som lager en bro i mellom ungdommelig og voksen fiction. Pullman bruker et modent språk, men har likevel med dialekt og slang, noe som gir boken et større virkelighetspreg og gjør den mer personlig. Når man følger Lyra og hennes venner, er språket lett, ungdommelig og enkelt å henge med på. Men når vi derimot er med forskerne og Lord Asriel merker amen med en gang at man har krysset barrieren og gått over til de lærdes del av boka.

Boken er let oversiktelig og er delt opp i forskjellige deler. Først er det tre forskjellige deler som alle er bygd opp av kapitler. Kapitlene har alle navn som gir deg en vag fornemmelse av hva som kommer til å komme. Selve plottet i historien er ganske så sammensatt, så vil man henge med i boka, må man kunne huske hva som har skjedd tidligere i boken. Det er ting i boken som vi bare er nødt til å finne ut selv, ting Pullman ikke forklarer oss. For eksempel så er elektrisitet kalt ”anbarisk kraft” i Pullmans verden. Pullman greier å presentere oss for alle fantasidelene i boken så naturlig at vi blir automatisk en del av det, i stedet for å få alt tredd over oss på en gang, slik det er i mange andre fantasibøker.

Som i alle bøker, har denne også ett tema og en moral. Pullmans triologi er svært provokativ, ettersom det etter hvert kommer frem at boken handler om Gud virkelig eksistere eller ei. Et bevis på det er at triologien ble boikottet av katolikker verden over da den ble publisert.

I denne boken ser vi tydelig tegn på korrupsjon og maktsyke fra Magisteriets side, som klart skal representere dagens

ledere. Emner her er et typisk ”Kirken er redd for at sannheten skal komme ut” emne. Men, enda et emne foreligger: barn blir kidnappet og atskilt fra sine daimoner ufrivillig. Er det rett at barna skal bli med på dette fordi noen voksne sier sånn? Er det rett å bestikke barna til dette? Og først og fremst, skal ikke barna vite at de kommer til å bli atskilt fra sin sjel og sin følgesvenn gjennom livet? Dette er bare noen av de temaene Philip Pullman tar opp.

Lyra er en elleve år gammel jente som leker, sprader og har det gøy i gatene. Men mot slutten har hun opplevd mer enn de fleste mennesker opplever på en hel levealder. Lyra går fra å være en blærete småunge med interesse kun for seg selv, til å bry seg mer om andre enn seg selv. Et bevis på det er det at hun drar fra Oxford til Svalbard for å redde sin lekekamerat som blir kidnappet. Mor slutte blir Lyra en mektig person, hun greier å ta de rette avgjørelsene og gjøre de rette tingene. Lyra vokser formidabelt som person og utvikler seg til en flott ung dame.

Boken ”Det Gylne Kompasset” er en av mine favoritter. Den, som så mange andre bøker, skildrer kampen mellom det gode og det onde. Men, Philip Pullman har greid å gjøre det på en fortryllende og fengende måte. Du greier ikke å legge fra deg boka før du har lest ferdig. Den tar de gi sitt grep og holder deg til du har avsluttet boka. Pullman har vevet inn så mange fantastiske skildringer at men kan nesten ta på verdenen man blir presentert for, føle det Lyra føler og lukte alt hun lukter.

Boken ”Det Gylne Kompasset” passer til folk i alle aldre, det eneste kravet er nok at man har fantasi.

Jeg gir boken terningkast 6 grunnet den fantastiske og fengende måten den er skrevet på og kreativitetsnivået. Boken får meg til å forsvinne inn i Lyras verden.

I don't want to wait for that day. I know, I want a lot. I want to do it now! I want to experience it now- all that life has to offer, I want it all- I want to travel, really travel and immerse myself in somewhere so different, I want to love (clearly I haven't done that enough), love so purely and without fear! I'm so ready, and I'm anxious!

Golden State Warriors golden boy Monta Ellis has recently turned more of a bronze color due to abrasions found on his right ankle, which he claims was sprained while playing a pick-up game in his home state of Mississippi.

Instead of preparing to take over as the Warriors number one guy, Ellis will spend the next 3-4 months recovering from his injury and trying to get his story straight. Several sources and sports medicine experts have told ESPN that the cuts and abrasions, along with a torn deltoid ligament, are not typical of a basketball-related high ankle sprain.

The Warriors are investigating the injury and if it's found that Ellis hurt himself doing something other than basketball (taking out the trash, erratic dancing at the club, burning his hands in hot wax), he may be forced to forefit his contract.

It appears that Ellis lied about his injury, which is pretty stupid, but he is just following in the footsteps of professional athletes that lie to weasel their way out of losing money. At least Ellis' excuse was reasonable, unlike these bozos:

- Lakers forward Vladimir Radmanovic claimed to have separated his shoulder when he slipped on a patch of ice while carrying a cup of coffee. Nobody swallowed this tripe to begin with, since Radmo was at a ski resort in Park City, Utah when the injury happened. He came clean after a few days, admitting that he hurt himself after a nasty snowboarding fall.

- Then-Giants second-baseman Jeff Kent claimed to have broken his wrist when he fell off of his truck while attmepting to give it a thorough cleansing. Reasonably suspicious about how a professional athlete could manage to fall off of his truck, the Giants looked into it and found that two men called 911 about the same time as Kent's injury. They said that they saw an unidentified rider fall off of his motorcycle while doing a wheelie down the street. Since Jeff Kent was never shy about his love for motorcycles, the Giants continued to look into it, but could never prove that Kent simply couldn't figure out the appropriate water to soap ratio.

While lying is a despicable act and should never be used to cheat your way out of a fine, it may be a reasonable option for those athletes trying to avoid looking like an idiot. Here is a list of boneheads that probably would have saved some face by lying about their injuries. Some highlights:

• Astros outfielder Hunter Pence injured himself walking through a sliding glass door at his own apartment.
• Yankees pitcher David Cone missed a start after being bit on the finger by his mother's dog. He should have listened to the advice of my college coach (and 1982 World Series Game 6 winner) John Stuper: "Always pet dogs and open blind doors with your non-pitching hand."
• Twins outfielder Marty Cordova was benched due to sunburn suffered from forgetting to set the timer while inside the tanning bed.
• Padres pitcher Adam Eaton stabbed himself in the gut while trying to open a DVD. (Hey, I bet we've all done this at least once...or at least wanted to stab ourselves while trying to get the damn thing open!)
• Brewers pitcher Steve Sparks dislocated his shoulder while trying to rip a phonebook in half during a motivational seminar. Each child in the audience went on to join a gang.

So maybe lying about an injury isn't the worst thing in the world. Just try to avoid dangerous situations like washing your truck, opening DVD's, and giving motivational speeches.

I've finally got my "new" laptop (essentially on loan for 2 years from SAIT) set up.  It wasn't necessarily a pleasant experience, but it had to be done.  On the bright side of things though, my dad once again offered to buy me a LCD monitor to use with the laptop instead of the old CRT I had.  This time I took him up on it.  So in the picture you can see the new laptop on the top left (the old laptop is underneath it), and my new monitor on the right.  :-)  I think I'm going to have to rearrange things again tomorrow though, both screens are just a bit too far away from where I sit, and I really don't want to strain my eyes.  I'm really looking forward to using a 2-monitor set-up though - it's working great right now, I've got Facebook on the laptop screen, and my blog writer on the LCD.

This weekend I went to Kicking Horse in Golden, BC with Jason.  His cousin's wedding was on Saturday.  It was fun, although the ceremony and reception showed me that I want a completely non-traditional wedding when the time comes for me.  Luckily, Jason seems to agree.  Us and our best friends, and someplace warm and far away.  And that's it.  No reception or anything.  Actually, I could probably handle a larger wedding if I had to, but the thought of a reception actually terrifies me.  I have absolutely no desire to be the centre of attention in front of that many people.  Ick.  I'll have to get some pictures from someone else (I left my camera in the townhouse).

Originally, Jason and I were just going to drive out Saturday morning, and come back Sunday morning.  But we ended up staying till this morning, and went mountain biking yesterday.  AMAZING!  I had such a blast.  It was a great deal - $125 each for a lift ticket, bike, padding, helmet and glove rental, and then the damage insurance.  We went with Jason's brother Tom, so he was able to help us find some good trails.  Although I felt a little guilty since Jason and Tom were just flying down the hill, and they kept having to stop and wait for me.  Especially the first run - the second run I figured out that the bike was actually more responsive when I let off the brakes and gained some speed.  Who would've thought?!

The only downside to that is when I crashed, I crashed pretty hard.  The first run I basically fell over sideways a couple of times when I hit some rocks.  But I landed on some soft moss-like plants, and had a quick giggle and was good to go.  Second run though, I missed a turn and went over a berm onto some chunky rocks.  I managed to go over my handlebars into the bushes though, so it wasn't too bad overall.  A couple bruises on my legs, but the biggest one is definitely on my bum.  No scratches though.  My giggle-fest lasted a good minute or so though for that one.  Then I went down a pretty big drop, which went well, but then I ran head-on into a log, and I went over the handlebars again.  Oops. 

I was pretty sore last night - my right leg hurt every time I moved it.  But today I'm a bit better, the pain's a lot more muted.  Hopefully tomorrow it will be even less.

Jason and I definitely want to go biking again now.  We're thinking we'll try to head out next year with a group of people.  Should be awesome.

Anyways, as much as I'd like to continue writing (especially since I've got anything but writer's block right now), I really need to be heading to bed.  Tomorrow is going to come much too quickly.

Today when I awoke the air was full of moisture.  Low, dense clouds hovered over the tops of the hills.  Instead of layers to protect from sun I layered to protect from wind, rain and cold.  I was very excited to venture into the landscape in this new, grey and sullen light.  How weary I had become of the brilliant light and heat always illuminating everything.  As I begin walking I saw that the landscape itself looked different in this diffused light, everything slightly muted, nothing standing out.  I noticed how sound vibrations seemed different in this new moistness.  The cold air whipped around my neck and I wished I'd worn a heavier jacket. Yes, this is the edge of winter's touch.  I can feel already the certainty of winter: the quite and stillness, the land asleep under a thin layer of snow.  Perhaps there are really only two seasons: winter and summer.  Like yin and yang, each carries the promise of the other within it.  It seems on days like this that spring and fall are merely the medium values on the spectrum.  What is spring but the death of winter and the birth of summer?  Fall but the death of summer and the birth of winter.  Yes, winter and summer are the axis points, the double zenith of the pendulum.

As I was out walking around looking for wildlife, I came across this gorgeous field of wheat instead and I just had to shoot it.

Once upon a time, long long ago...men were simply men. Working to bring food home to their women and once at home, lazing under the love and care poured upon them by their ladies. But then, talks began, discussions were aplenty and the group of feminists arose who decided that males were just chauvinist pigs who were too lazy to help in the kitchen with the cleaning, washing and cooking! Thus, the men became the guilt ridden New Man where he helped around the house and went to work and basically did everything that needed doing while their ladies were still plotting upon how to bring about equality between men and women. Soon enough the sect of the sensitive, moisturizer/fairness creams/sunscreen-using Metrosexual Man took on, once they got fed up of being the mule while their wives got political!

But of course! The insatiable women soon enough missed all the testosterone that used to be around them and yearned for the return of the Real Men!

He whose mind is uncluttered, who makes clear-cut on the spot decisions, is strong and brave and oozes masculinity. But who at the same time keeps himself clean and impeccably groomed without taking long in the bathroom!

He who is a gentleman and opens doors for women, lets her go before him, gives up his seat for her.. He who would stand upon the entry of a woman into the room, who would at least act as though he is listening to what his woman is saying without interrupting, without giving advises..at the most just nod his head every 60 seconds and grunt to acknowledge the fact that he is listening to her combined with a considerate frown or chuckle at the appropriate moments...

He who wants to make love to her arduously being both soft and wild at the same time without any kind of extra kinky stuff like bondage or domination or foul language.. The old, smooth, romantic way of making love... He, who would never raise his hand or voice at a lady or abuse her in any kind of manner..

He who would not lead a woman on making her think he is interested in a lifetime together when all he wants is sex.

He who would give up the computer, the newspaper and the sports for that one special girl :)

Basically all these are the features girls have always looked for in a guy.. But well, it is the things you want most which are the hardest to get!

Now, with men going retro, the women too aren't far behind. Women these days prefer to say at home and look after their husband and kids. I'm not saying that they are uninterested in a career. But once kids are born, they realize that they are wanted more by their children at home than at the workplace! And so, they are willing to give it up although the catchword here is "For the time being".

But all in all, women have begun to realize the importance of being a homemaker.. of being the thread that ties a family together. Because, to make a normal house into a home filled with love and warmth, where outsiders yearn to come..where the family feels a sense of belonging and safety is a very very Very difficult task.

Career women have work. Above all the problems at home, they have work tensions, deadlines to meet, egos to be swallowed, anger to be controlled.. It makes life a misery except for the salary which you get every month and a sense of purpose that makes you feel wanted.. gives you your own importance. That feeling is different in its own way.

There was a time when women (a very few handful of them that is) were alright with their husbands staying at home to look after their children while they were the bread-winners of the family. But now the trend is changing.

Women want a man who they can feel safe with. Who they can depend upon. Who is responsible. Who would take care of her and the family. Who is financially stable. A man who would turn to her for love and for reassurance, to keep them mentally able and strong.

This is what women all over the world after all want right..?

In fact, men too want a traditional wife who would most importantly be loyal to him and shower all her love upon him and women are happy to oblige..

Sometimes in my coaching interventions a client would come back and ask me why I asked a particular question at that very moment which they found to be the key to unlock themselves (from that situations / problem ) and I have never ever had an answer for it!

I guess its inituition. It has always helped me select that piece of feedback, ask that very particular question at that particular point of time, told me when to probe deeper and also which recurring patterns to be picked up. I am so glad I have been able to build on this muscle because it means I can serve my clients better, something which I am very passionate about.

However I can never forget what my instructor at ICA said in a class " Though inituition can enrich the process of coaching and can lead to breakthroughs yet it is very important to guard against preconceptions and premature closure.i.e leaping to conclusions.The coach needs to listen and acknowledge inituition, use it, maybe write down a thought and come back to it at a later stage in the context of wider information"
