Once again we in the anime fan community are faced with the ultimate contest of the gods, the Anime

Once again we in the anime fan community are faced with the ultimate contest of the gods, the Anime Saimoe Tournament. Run by a mighty engine that can be a god or a devil, Saimoe pits the anime girls against each other to see who the otaku of the internet deem to be the most moe character of that year.

In recent years, foreigners have been encouraged to vote, and as such an English translation of the rules have been posted, as well as a Chinese one. Just as a warning, the instructions are kind of cryptic ("Voting will occur in the voting location") so it can be pretty confusing. 2channel uses a rather unusual thread system where posts are locked and archived after 1000 replies, so keep in mind that there is no SINGLE Saimoe thread.

It's not really feasible for me to keep updating the voting threads constantly, so I'll leave that to the popular anime forums, unless it really matters to me.

Currently, the tournament is undergoing preliminaries, where voters can choose who among the ENTIRE pool of female characters of 2008 are worthy enough to get into the tournament proper. The most important thing to keep in mind here is that Ogiue's preliminary round is on July 22nd, 2008.

When it gets near Ogiue's voting date(s) I'll further clarify what needs to be done, but keep her in your mind and in your heart.

Today, on this Independence Day, I order you to act like an American Anime Character.

-Remember to replace simple Japanese pronouns and random words with AMERICAN ones.
-Blond hair isn't necessary, but it can often help.
-If you have trouble gaining acceptance, claim that you are in fact Half-Japanese.
-TALK AS LOUDLY AS POSSIBLE.

If you're still not up to the task, I instead ask that you observe Americans in the wild.

Good things come in small packages, Ohno mused, as Ogiue fidgeted under layers of cloth. The Kujian uniform was a little too big for the petite Ogiue, but like rest of the onlookers (Sasahara kept looking away, trying to avoid the death glares that were being shot everywhere) Ohno thought that the way the sleeves draped over on Ogiue was positively adorable.

"Now smile for the camera~!" Ohno chirps.

"........." Ogiue glares at everyone. "Why. Am. I. Doing. This." She tries to catch Sasahara's eye. Why the hell did you let me get into this, she moans inwardly.

"We need more members for the club! And you're our mascot~" Ohno replies, as the camera catches Ogiue scowling at her. "Now come on, don't frown like that - it's not becoming of you or the character! You need to frown with more gusto!"

"With more gusto?!" Ogiue echoes. She is incredulous.

Gone are the days when you can get such a well-made figure for a mere 5000yen sum. (In fact, I got her for even cheaper in Mongkok because I kind of swindled the store-owner ;D() ) ALTER never fails to disappoint with their workmanship and Ogiue is a testament to that. Reasonably priced and impeccable quality.

On the surface, it's hard to find any fault with this figure, other than potential paint-rubs on the inner body.

If we're going to go about it objectively, Ogiue's pose is a static and some might even say, boring one. Simply standing still with her arms at her side, there's nothing unique about the stance. Yet, aside from the obvious stability that this figure possesses (as compared to more complex poses that have higher leaning potential), the pose is perfect for not only Ogiue's awkward personality but also the character she's cosplaying as.

Yet, for such a stoic figure, the white-base seems rather paltry in comparison. Perhaps ALTER could have provided a brighter, or more textured base.

Her face is adorable and the exceptionally tsun-tsun expression will probably set off most moe radars (moedars XD). The blush is not overdone, and her eyebrows are wonderfully arched in an annoyed expression. Her lips are curled in an almost-frown, at some angles it looks as though she's somewhat amused at the predicament she got herself in.

Shading and paintwork are flawless on my Ogiue. (Oh ho, that sounded possessive!) There are no stray paint-marks or sloppy coats of paint. I absolutely love the shading done for her hair, it gives a lot of depth and movement to otherwise well, static plastic.

The muscles on her thighs and calfs are well-defined, through light shading, and the swimsuit avoids the mistake of being painted in a shiny coat of paint. Choosing to keep it matt, gives the school swimsuit a raw-er (RAWR RAWR FIGHT DA POWA) feel and also accentuates whatever curves that Ogiue has.

I have to admit, the sculpt is really really good. I can't begin to describe how much I appreciate (this will sound wrong w/o context) the amount of detail put into the figure. If you run your finger along the inside of Ogiue's legs (I told you that it would sound wrong), her legs feel anatomically correct with specific muscles being defined. Similarly, little things like the way the swimsuit scrunches up at the bottom are a thumbs up for good QC.

The main hair pieces flows naturally and avoids being too clumpy. However, I'd have liked it better if the ahoge-ish lock of hair was a bit more streamlined.

Having Ogiue dressed in a swimsuit and with long socks and shoes enhance the awkwardness of the figure - though I have to say that it looks really odd at first. Her shoes look positively childish and seem to be a jarring contrast with well, Ogiue's maturity.

The decision to have a cast-off figure was also a well-thought out one - but probably not as well executed as it could have been. The mechanisms aren't too hard to figure out and come off rather easily. Definitely beats having to swap bodies and multiple parts. With Ogiue, ALTER kept it simple by having cast-off clothes and interchangeable arms.

Overall, I do think that ALTER's Ogiue is a great buy - if you still can find her on the market, she's a worthy addition to your collection. Especially if you happen to like Genshiken (who doesn't like Genshiken?!).

Puru puru pururin pururin

Puru puru pururin pururin
Puru puru pururin puru pururin
Puru puru pururin pururin

I can’t believe I had this annoyingly catchy song playing the whole time I was writing this. And since I’m writing this post at 2 in the morning, I know I’ll have probably have dreams about Pururin later…

But I had to play the Pururin song in celebration of Otaku-ness. I went crazy after hearing Leader Itsubun declare the new topic, cause Welcome to the NHK! and Genshiken are two of my favorite animes. As a warning beforehand: I’m biased. I have a crazy, unusual love for the people society label as otakus. And frankly, because of this bias, I have no idea how this post will turn out. Definitely expect more of Genshiken rants though, and excuse the unorganization or the spewing of thoughts everywhere. Now that you know, jumping right in: how do I define an “otaku”?

Actually, to be truthful, I don’t really know how to define an “otaku”. It’s one of those words that doesn’t have a definite set meaning to me, but instead gets categorized with other words. I actually just found out that the term “otaku” didn’t really have a negative effect in the past as it does today. According to Wiki, “It applied the term to the (then) recently caught serial killer Tsutomu Miyazaki (宮崎 勤), who turned out to be a recluse obsessed with pornographic anime and manga and who lived out his rape fantasies on young girls, thus attaching a huge taboo to a formerly innocuous term.”

But I don't see otakus as negatively as society sees them. Let's just say that when you say OTAKU, I say Madarame.

I love Madarame. I love how he has an open personality. (As you can see, his open declaration for jacking off to anime.) He's not afraid to express his love at all. And he probably isn't the hottest person by society's standards, but it's his honesty that makes me like him. (If he were real, I'd ask him to take me as his girlfriend.) His character screams I LIKE ANIME AND MANGA AND ERO-GAMES AND KUJIBIKI UNBALANCE. And I don't see Madarame as a recluse at all. Yes, he may stay at home to play an ero-game or read an explicit doujinshi, but who cares? He's human. In my opinion, it's the same as girls and their love for yaoi (lol. Mada x Sasa, Mada x Sasa). I look up to Madarame. His character of openess and honesty is something I want for myself.

I don’t know about you, but I’d love to be called an “otaku” to my face in real life. Unfortunately, not many people around me in my life are obsessed or hardcore over anime or manga, so they don’t quite understand the word otaku. But I definitely don’t think it’s a negative term. What’s wrong with being obsessive or zealous over something you like? Be honest with yourself. It’s a hobby, a passion. Like Madarame says, “You’re voice is just too small!” Tell the world you’re an otaku and that you like anime and manga. What does it matter? But I don't want to be hypocritical, cause in a way, I have problems with this too.

How do I have problems with declaring my otaku-ness? For one, society doesn’t take on the same perspective. I typed in otaku on Google, and it led me to Urban Dictionary terms. As you can expect, an otaku isn’t quite received with cordiality in the world. As I scrolled down the page, I saw “total loser”, “nothing better to do with their life”, “lifeless nerd” and “Bet he's never actually even talked to a real-live girl before”. And seeing as how society looks down on people lumped in with this term, I’m guessing the main insecurities otakus have is that they don’t like to be perceived as an otaku. I can empathize with this a little. Even though I’d love to be called an otaku because I don’t consider myself a total loser or a lifeless nerd, there are some things I can’t really tell others about. YES, my friends and parents and other family members know I have an insane obsession over Japanese culture. However, what they probably DON’T know is the fact that I love BL and hardcore yaoi manga and anime. It isn’t something I’d like to proclaim to them (like my parents would kill me because they’re really religious).

However, even with that said, some of my friends know that I like yaoi. My friend always tells me not to send him anything yaoi because I always threaten to, but he doesn’t have a problem with me reading it. To him, it’s acceptable. Besides, doesn’t everyone have a dirty little secret? Yaoi is what I consider mine. You’ll still find me wanting to be called an “otaku” by someone in real life. And although otaku is termed in with staying in the house all the time, I don’t do that. I go out regularly to hang out, and when the time calls for it, I’ll shut myself in my room and download the newest episode of whatever I’m watching at the time. Taking it from Madarame again, it's not like we TRY to become otakus. It's just a label for our passion and hobby: watching anime and reading manga. And it's not like we can quit either.

As for the Akihabara incident? I can’t really say much about it because I don’t really know the details. But people have been blaming incidents like the Columbine shootings on videogame violence. I remember reading this one article on how games like Mortal Combat and Goldeneye can influence potential killers in kids. Ridiculous. Perhaps I'm being to harsh, but I seriously don't think video games have anything to do with it. I own those games and couple of friends own those games, and for the record, I haven’t killed anyone, and neither have they. In the same way, I really don't think liking anime or manga or being an otaku has to do anything with killing people. Even so, this will have long-term effects. People are going to look down on otakus probably even more. Like the “serial killer Tsutomu Miyazaki” case that soured the otaku term, this incident has been, in my opinion, blown-up to greater proportions in pointing the finger at something else than it needs to be.

With that, I leave you with this clip. Enjoy~ (Wow. I don't know if this makes any sense at all. Sorry if it doesn't. It's late. Yay for my first RR post.)

I'm usually okay with it, but there are times when I wonder how to explain my fascination with Ogiue to people who are not otaku, or not familiar with anime and manga. There is perhaps a latent fear that it's not something easily understood, or that I've taken my interest in Ogiue a step too far such that I'd prioritize her over a significant other if I were in a relationship.

...Then I realize that I'm worried about my obsession and sexualization of a manga character who constantly worries about what others think of her obsession and sexualization of manga characters.

I haven’t watched an episode of Speed Racer for two weeks but I intend to pick it up again. Es

I haven't watched an episode of Speed Racer for two weeks but I intend to pick it up again. Especially since I'm using it as an example of how Animation is popular culture for my Society and Culture assignment. Hey, if you have a better example that fulfills the curriculum criteria of a commercialised, easily accessible to mass audiences animation that isn't The Simpsons (which every other student and their dog is using as their example) I'd like to hear it. And don't say Lucky Star because that has jokes that aren't as accessible to the average person in it, we're talking MASS audiences.

I also watched the first two episodes of Genshiken. Man have I been missing out, I had no idea this great Anime show existed until I saw it referenced in an IGN.com article. Clearly I've been living under the Anime rock, because since then I've found major fanbase of this show online. I'll definitely watch the whole thing if I get the chance, but I am quite busy at the moment.

Manga is a pet love of mine, because it is an artform that needs to be appreciated within a specific mindset. That mindset isn't so much the "OMG Schoolgirls" mindset, but "Gee, the cinematic structure of the panels tell a story which is well illustrated in a school of art which can be as subversive as it can be derivative in some cases". I like Manga a lot, because it gives me something I can enjoy in between studying and writing/drawing. The important difference between me and the average Manga artist fan is that the only time I draw in the Manga/Anime style is when I'm trying to comment in my work on the artform in a visual and merged textual form (the illustrated novel). As an illustrator the worlds I construct should have characters who look different from the Anime characters they identify with on screen, visually they shouldn't be too much like the Anime characters. I've needed to keep this in mind for an illustrated book I'm writing about Australia and Japan's relationship.

I'll probably do a lot more Manga reviews here in future as I acquire more Manga to read, as well as reviews of the Manga I already have on my shelf. (I only bought Vol. 1-4 of Love Hina so I could learn to draw Anime girls, I swear! I usually buy the tasteful stuff, mmkay?)

I recently listened to the Ninja Consultant podcast concerning the sexualization that occurs among fangirls, and the fact that this has become more prominent in recent times, with not only yaoi becoming a common sight at conventions but also modern works such as Dr. Who and Avatar: The Last Airbender being consciously aware of this fanbase. The topic of fanfiction comes up in the discussion, which is to be expected given that fanfiction and fangirls practically go hand in hand, but it reminded me of the fact that at the beginning of my own internet-based fandom I too was into fanfiction.

When I first began using the internet, my first fandom was a NiGHTS into dreams fanfiction site. I loved the Sega Saturn game to death (and still do), and I sought out other fans of NiGHTS. It was there that I found a site called "Nightopia on the Net" which would later change its name a few more times. It was here that I not only discovered other people with a passion for NiGHTS, but also stories that expanded upon the few plot details we were given as players of the game into a rich and vibrant (at least in my young eyes) universe. I've never read the Star Wars Extended Universe books, but I suspect the feeling was similar to anyone who is a fan of those, a feeling that the world given to us in these initial stories is so vast and unexplored that one can't help but wonder what else is out there.

At some point, a few years down the line, I read fanfiction less and less. By this point I had been checking out fanfiction from various sources based on all sorts of series and would even actively seek out more unusual titles and concepts. Something in me began to sour, and I could no longer take fanfiction until I almost stopped reading it entirely. Back then, my reasoning was that I disliked the stories being produced for my fandoms, feeling that more than any sort of technical errors the problem was that the writers did not understand the characters. The characters' actual personalities as displayed in their respective shows were nothing like the personalities displayed in fanfiction, and I asked (no one), "What's the point of using these characters if you're not going to actually use them?"

As mentioned in the Ninja Consultant discussion, it seems as if some works these days are simply there as fan fodder. Characters are given basic traits which appeal to the "shipping" side of fandom, and fans are free to ignore or cultivate any "evidence" as to whether or not their "One True Pair" could thrive. Setting aside any original creators' desires to actively engage this line of thought, by all rights these are the people who are responsible for me leaving fanfiction in the first place.

But really was I, and am I, all that different?

Why do people enjoy pairing unreasonable characters together? To put it simply, it's because they find the pairing to be hot. No big mysteries there. It's what makes the Zutara pairing in Avatar so popular: a conflict of emotions, the fire/water dynamic, the idea that "if only they would get together, they would be great." Of course, the conflict comes from actually getting them together.

Is there something wrong with this? Wanting to dive deeper into a world, to prove through fanfiction that there is so much more to a story, one can say that trying to find deeper subtext in the relationships presented is its own form of exploration. Hell, I can somewhat relate to making unreasonable pairings. I have a rather straight-laced friend who I would like to see date girls that would be all over him 24/7. Why? Because it would entertain me to no end.

Perhaps there is a threshold, and it is crossed when fans begin to believe that their opinions constitute the truth about a work, or even what should be true. This isn't about creator's vision vs spectator's vision or anything of that sort, but rather to what extent people and groups begin to believe their own hype. Other than that, I think people are free to believe in whatever they want.

Even then, such a statement borders on the idea that there's such a thing as a "right" fan and a "wrong" fan, and really, even if I find certain fans or their reasoning distasteful, I am just one person and I am not a judge of fanfiction. More importantly, I am not a judge of the heart.

After all, as Sasahara once said to Ogiue, no one can stop you from liking something.

Hiroyuki, author and creator of Doujin Work, is not exactly a common name among anime fans. In some cases, I'd suspect that mentioning it would get more people thinking about To Heart than anything else. No, Hiryoyuki is probably better known around the internet for his comic involving a bespectacled teenager with a troubled past trying to get it on with a feline familiar. In other words, "A Cat is Fine Too."

So here we have a man firmly rooted in the doujinshi "industry" making a comic about creating doujinshi. The story centers around a girl named Osana Najimi and her quest to create doujinshi. However, unlike Kazuki of Comic Party, who draws because he finds it incredibly fun, or Ogiue of Genshiken, who draws because she can't help it, Najimi dives into the world of doujinshi for one reason and one reason only: profit. Her friends Justice and Tsuyuri are able to sell well at doujinshi events, so with a little practice the money-loving Najimi feels that she too can rake it in.

The only problem is that she sucks at drawing. Najimi has no natural talent, and effort does not seem to reward her much either. The work she creates sells mainly for the so-bad-it's-good factor.

Hiroyuki's style, born out of drawing doujinshi, makes much sense for a comic revolving around doujinshi. Overall, the manga (which is presented in 4-panel-style) is well-drawn and entertaining. The same cannot be said of the anime.

The anime adaptation of Doujin Work suffers from poor animation, though much of it is forgiven when taking into account the (presumably) low budget and fairly simple designs of the characters. There were also rumors floating around 2ch and the internet in general that working on the animation with Hiroyuki was a bit of a nightmare, and not in the good way. Even if this is just a rumor, the result is still a show that could have looked better and been better.

But that's what makes it so interesting.

Here you have someone drawing a comic about a person who tries to get into the world of doujinshi with lackluster results. This comic is then adapted into an anime...with lackluster results. In a sense, the mediocre showing of the Doujin Work anime adaptation is the best possible outcome for it.

"Oh, but that wasn't intended by the creator!" you might be saying. Well, not everything intended by the creator defines a work. Kind of like when an anime becomes a cult classic in spite of its quality and not because of it.

PS: I know the anime adaptation has a section which shows the voice actors of the anime trying to make and sell doujinshi, but for some reason no one ever bothered to include those parts in the available episodes. A sad loss.

I've previously discussed using anime to support one's Japanese studies, where I pointed out that it is very possible to do so.

Recently, this topic of discussion came up with a friend who also studies Japanese, and we determined that context can be very useful for learning any language, and in the case of Japanese that context may very well be the anime you watch. Just remembering a scene where a word is used can be enough to recall the meaning of something.

It might be looked down upon, but hey, whatever works, right?

Actually, more than anime and remembering vocabulary, I feel that making mental connections can be very useful in learning kanji. As an example, while studying with the help of flash cards I came across the word 油断 or "to be off-guard" and I immediately recognized it for one reason and one reason only.

Of course, don't rely totally on anime, and don't let it be the sole focus of your studies.

I went to Japan Day with some friends, and I even met Erin and Noah, the Ninja Consultants and a bun

I went to Japan Day with some friends, and I even met Erin and Noah, the Ninja Consultants and a bunch of other folks I had never met before, like James. Sadly, I got there a little late and missed many exciting activities, most notably the Free Food, though I noticed that the curry they were serving was not any curry but Go Go Curry, which is one of my favorite places to eat. Seriously if you haven't been there you should really check out this robust and affordable Japanese curry. Unless you cannot eat milk or pork. Their menu does not deviate.

Anyway, I saw HALCALI with friends. The second song they performed was Tip Taps Tip. When HALCALI asked (in English) if the audience knew about the anime that Tip Taps Tip was an ending theme for, Eureka Seven, I let out a high-pitched "WHOO" with my arms outstretched.

Other than me, all I heard was silence.

Everyone in that audience: You suck.

All in all a good time, and I was able to have various groups of friends of mine meet each other. Between them I discussed fujoshi, learning Japanese, and of course anime, though not everyone participated in every conversation.

The most important thing though is that at one point during Japan Day I ended up Pictochatting with my friends...who were sitting right next to me.

Naturally I drew Ogiue.

But then I thought, maybe I should keep drawing Ogiue. Of course, I'd have to mix it up. I drew standard Ogiue, without the glimmer in her eyes, so what should I draw next?

Why, Ogiue in high school, of course. You can see her at the beginning of Volume 6 inside the TV behind the actual Ogiue.

Next I drew Ogiue in Junior High. My friend remarked to me, "I don't like where this is going."

Of course, we have no record of Ogiue prior to that, so I should have stopped. But wait! I had an idea.

So I drew a girl, her face obscured, holding a doujinshi, her first doujinshi, which she saw in 5th grade. Thus making it at least partially accurate.

Yes, I did just spend more time talking about a few minutes of drawing Ogiue on a Nintendo DS than the entire rest of the event.

Genshiken follows the lives of a group of college students drawn together by their shared hobbies, and the trials and adventures associated with being otaku. The story begins with the introduction of Kanji Sasahara, a shy, confidence-lacking freshman who on club day at university, decides to join a club he would actually enjoy, Genshiken. Over his four years at Shiiou University, Sasahara comes to accept himself for who he is and loses the inhibitions and guilt he once felt and associated with otaku culture, becoming an enthusiastic clubmember, and for a time, a capable club president. As the story of Genshiken progresses, focus is also placed on Saki Kasukabe, a determined non-otaku who initially struggles to drag her boyfriend out of the club, and Chika Ogiue, a self-professed otaku-hater who feels a deep-seated shame and self-loathing toward her own interests and hobbies.
