Yesterday was one of my favorite days on a mountain bike ever. I felt like I was in a bike video at times on these trails. I've never ridden trails that are so purposefully built for having fun on a bike. It was an awesome trip and was the experience I needed to encourage me to spend more time there. I've always felt that I'd really like to try this kind of riding, but there was always a huge financial roadblock. With a full time job and no kids I can finally afford the travel and gear to make this a reality. Now I have the confidence to invest more money and time into this new discipline.

We spent the first few runs on the downhill section of the mountain. It was true East Coast mountain biking with tons of rocks and roots, but it was also interspersed with a bunch of stunts. We all took turns encouraging each other to ride the stunts and conquer our fears. There was a big roller coaster feature that was a lot scarier than it looked. There were some ladder bridges that had drop offs at the end. The best part was that when you got to the bottom, you just rode the lift back to the top.

The other side of the mountain featured much longer trails that flowed together like you wouldn't believe. It was basically a series of switchbacks that had kickers and tabletops in between. Each of the switchbacks had large berms to help you keep your speed up for the whole run. These runs were so long that your hands ached at the bottom from being on the brakes. Unfortunately they don't run the lift on this side this time of year, but they did have a sweet bus to shuttle us back to the top.

I'm already counting down the days until next season and plotting my return.

27 wrzesnia 2008 r. ok godz 9 udalo nam sie opuscic dom by po dziesiatej byc juz w wawozie/dolinie Glenmalure.

Karlos ruszyl pierwszy solo, my z Ula za nim.

To byla prawdziwa niespodzianka i dala nam strasznie duzo radosci i tylez samo energii: jajcowizna z 12 jaj smazona na maselku oczywiscie, mmmm.... kabanosy i kielbasa smazona z celula, czosnkiem i roznymi przyprawami, mmmm..... goraca kawo-czekolada.... mmmmMMmmniam!

Zszamalismy do syta, poznalismy ciekawych ludzi - Toma i Ursule i wspolnie z nimi oraz pewnym czlowiekiem sprawiajacym wrazenie poszukiwacza swej wlasnej piatej klepki zeszlismy w dol wschodnim ramieniem Lug by skrecic w lewo i dalej samym brzegiem stromizny, znow skaczac przez mokradla, dojsc do poludniowej strony glownego strumienia.

Zas obszerne informacje o mokradlach irlandzkich, wraz z kilkoma wydobytymi z nich cialami ludzkimi z zachowana skora, wlosami i miesniami mozna posiasc odwiedzajac Muzeum Archeologii i Etnografii na Kildare St w Dublinie.

This weekend I was at the second Fat Face Nite Race in sunny Scarborough. With over 300 mountain bikers ripping throught the streets of Scarborough and the forecast of heavy rain, it was an epic downhill spectacle.

Several thousand spectators lined the course from Scarborough Castle down to South Bay taking in a series of table tops and steps before reaching a large final drop and tight right hander towards the finish. Practice and seeding took place all day in which competitors put themselves against the clock before the race, which is the worlds only urban night downhill race started at 7:00pm. The event attracted some big name riders including Scott Beaumont; Will Longdon; Matthew Simmonds; Tracy Mosely; Helen Gaskill and Current Masters World Champion, Lynda Davies.

After watching the practice and seeding in relatively dryish conditions with some short heavy showers, come 6:45pm the showers got heavier and heavier. By 8:00pm the rain become even heavier and made the course and jumps like ice. Couldn't believe that some guys were still riding slicks. There was a few bail outs although the race had to be stopped for a while when a rider knocked himself unconsious. Overall a good day out and superb race.

Or possibly a wheelchair. Before I go any further, I must tell you that however much to the contrary it may seem, I really, truly loved a very large number of the minutes we spent going up and down mountains in the pouring rain. This may read like a litany of awful experiences but quite often, it was the view, not the height, which took my breath away.

We walked more miles and climbed more hills this week than I would normally do in a month. It was undoubtedly very good for me and character forming to boot. I thank the heavens for good boots!

I will tell you about it while I wait to see if any of my hasty, windblown, wobbly shots came out :)

We arrived in Cumbria of the English lakes, clutching our Wainright* book, on a sunny Sunday morning. We wandered Ambleside and bought a pair of matching gilet fleece thingies in a sale. We decided to do a short easy walk up a very small mountain. The view was splendiferous and there was a jackdaw touting his bright silver stare and gleaming feathers in hopes of getting a bit of left over tourist lunch. After a while, and after a few photos, my legs agreed that it was worth attempting to walk the longer way back. Near the lower end of the walk back, the road went down steeply and one of my knees suddenly hurt a lot. I walked the rest of the way down crabwise.

Next morning, the sun did not shine but rain fell steadily from stormy skies so we went to Keswick and walked wetly around it. Also we went to a pencil museum (which was actually very interesting indeed). Then the skies cleared, just enough that we thought we might do another, even easier, walk up to see Aire Force - a beautiful waterfall in the woods. Up being the operative part. And we were wrong about the rain, it returned and lent the woods and boulders a splendidly gloomy and doomladen air.

[caption id="attachment_196" align="aligncenter" width="268" caption="Aire Force"][/caption]

After passing a number of cateracts, plunging into dark ravines we decided that we might just possibly have missed the hole in the wall through which we had intended to walk round the fells above to get the most impressive views of Ullswater, shrouded in mist.

We made our way back down through the twisty forest and had a wonderful cream tea in the cafe. Then returned, as the evening sun came out and gleamed brightly on all the wet leaves and rocks and crags, to our B&B and our enormous bed. I love extra large beds! Where we lay stranded like wet fish until we had enough energy to shower and go out for dinner.

Oddly enough, it was raining the next morning so we went to Kendal where we didn't find the famous Kendal mint cake shop but where I did buy a little raincoat for my camera. There's something inhibiting about exposing expensive digital stuff to the elements. I said to Barney (now being equipped to take wet photos and keen to try it out) let's go to Coniston and look at the view through the mist and rain and eat pies. So we bought pies (crappies, I seem to have written in my notepad but that must be an error surely?) and wonderfully, as we arrived at the lake, the sun came out and clouds and sunshine competed for being the most dramatic and beautiful. And the pies were hot and the water sparkled :)

[caption id="attachment_197" align="aligncenter" width="468" caption="Coniston Water"][/caption]

As it wasn't yet time to collapse completely, we went on to Tarn Hows to view the picture book lake and I got to wander off in the sun and take pictures all by myself while Barney sat in the car and read Wainright. (Plotting my next near downfall!) Rain swept in white gusts across the distant Fells and the sun illuminated it.

[caption id="attachment_198" align="aligncenter" width="468" caption="Weather - Tarn Hows"][/caption]

I found a small crag of my very own (a very small one, about ten feet high) with a puddle in the middle of it.

[caption id="attachment_199" align="aligncenter" width="468" caption="Mig's Crag :)"][/caption]

The next day, the sun and rain alternated but as we drove fellwards, the skies ahead suggested that it might be worth attempting our first real, serious climb, up Catbells with views over Derwent Water and a pleasant walk back along the lakeside through Manesty Woods. Wainright said this walk would be enjoyed by children and grandmothers as well as more serious walkers.

As I expected, the climb was steep. So after a few feet I was impressively out of breath and my legs were completely jelly. But it was all just a question of taking a bit longer, I thought, remembering the children and Grannies who had enjoyed this 'walk'. Until I got halfway up a steep, rocky outcrop and realised that I was poised above a drop on either side of a narrow selection of footholds - all of which the jellyness of my legs wouldn't allow me to reach. The moment of acute panic wasn't so much about the immediate fear of inadvertant flying (bad enough I assure you) but about the realisation that I had already gone too far to turn back. There was absolutely no way in a million years that I could ever ever ever do this bit in reverse. They would just have to send the helicopters in to lift me off. And what the hell kind of grannies and children enjoyed this walk, I wondered furiously? The thought of the grannies spurred me on (and the five minutes of frozen panic gave my legs a rest and me time to get my breath back) so I made it over the rest of the rocky bit to the first 'little' peak. And got the first eyeful of the main peak which was not at all near but very very high above and very very thin!!! Oh No. Oh dear me no!!!! There's no way I can go all the way up there I decided. There has to be an easy way down from here where I can sit by the roadside and wait for Barney to get the car and rescue me. For some reason I didn't say any of this apart from a sort of breathlessly feeble squeak. This caused Barney to say kindly, no hurry, take your time, have some coffee. It's not far now, the views will be even better up there. Which reminded me that I ought to be taking photos. This revived me a bit (it's amazing how taking a photo does revive me) and we staggered onward and upward. Quite a lot (of staggering and upwardsness). The thin bit was wider than it looked from a long way down and the top was wide enough to walk about on in a wobbly sort of way and - Oh, I forgot the gusts of wind and sudden sidewayspours of rain and occasional bursts of blinding, full frontal sunlight that accompanied us up, like teasing, mischievious and not altogether friendly goblins (or boggarts as they used to be called in the North) - anyway, the view was worth all of the climb, every bit of it, and distant rain marched across the peaks and valleys and the sun and the clouds all did their thing again.

[caption id="attachment_202" align="aligncenter" width="468" caption="rain and sun"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_203" align="aligncenter" width="468" caption="Catbells peak and view (halfway up)"][/caption]

(If you can see the very tiny little bristle-like things on top of the peak, you might be surprised to learn that they are full sized people - just to give you an idea of the scale)

So after eating lunch, seated on a rock overlooking Derwent Water, we took our wet backsides down the fell. Down a steep zigzag path. After about twenty feet, my knee let me know that this kind of gradient was actually not an option. I descended the rest of the Fell crabwise. (Getting the hang of the crabwise thing after a while. It's quite simple, you do a swoop down to the next foothold with the right foot while balanced on the left leg and then bring the left leg down to join it. Then you repeat the movement a lot - for the next half hour in fact. Tremendously good exercise for the left thigh but a bit hard on the right foot and left hip. On smooth bits, you do a kind of rocking hobble. It must look very interesting from any other perspective than mine.) I blessed my walking stick on this bit as, without it, the only way down would have been to lie down and let Barney roll me down the hillside. (Which would have been a lot faster but I didn't trust him to keep me under control.)

Right. So on to the next bit of the walk, along the lakeshore through pleasant woodlands. Very nice woodlands and lakeshore but very wet as the rain had now settled to downpour mode (no doubt up on Catbells it was still doing sidewayspour in gusts). The lake was dramatically lashed by the wind and the trees sang a deep windy song above our heads. Occasionally we spied a distant sunny peak. My feet hurt. It was a mere mile and a half to the road and then just a short vertical walk up to where we parked the car. Amazingly, the car hadn't rolled away down the hill and would you believe it, the sun came out :)

I shall leave you here, wet, aching and simply dying to know what heroic feats we next achieved, though, in fact, Catbells, at four and a half miles, nearly finished this Granny off completely and I refused to even contemplate Haystacks and Buttermere (seven and a half miles). Frustrating for Barney of course but I think he realised that the only way we'd both get up Haystacks would be with me riding piggyback :) I did encourage him to do it without me but he didn't seem keen. I don't know why.

*For those of you who don't know of him, AW Wainwright, wrote wonderful walkers guides for the Lake District fells, illustrated with maps and sketches and full of marvellous detailed information. They may have been the first pocket sized walkers guides.

A little more than two months ago I broke my jaw in a mountain biking accident, so right afterwards I ordered a full face helmet. It's definitely shutting the barn door after the cows have already left, but I'm not letting this little injury slow me down. I've been waiting for this helmet for a while since it's a 2009 model and it came in just in time. There are some awesome downhill trails at Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia and they are only open for two more weekends. My friend Davy recently bought a long travel bike, the same travel as my new bike, but much burlier. We've both been wanting to get to Snowshoe and this weekend everything came together just right. We're meeting up with another friend of ours that has many huge bikes and does this kind of riding all the time. I'm so stoked to go ride some professionally built mountain bike trails and really see what I can do. There is going to be so much stuff there that I will never be able to attempt, but there are also a bunch of stunts and jumps that will help me build my skills quickly. This is the type of riding that I've wanted to do for a long time, but couldn't afford the proper equipment. It's a bummer that I'm only going to get one ride in this season, but you can bet I'll be ready for next summer.

For many beginners, learning to turn on a snowboard can be rather challenging and unnerving. The rea

For many beginners, learning to turn on a snowboard can be rather challenging and unnerving. The reason for this is that turning on a snowboard requires you to twist and turn is such a way that you feel like you are going to fall. Of course turning is absolutely essential to riding a snowboard and the feeling of loosing control goes away with time and practice.

A skidded turn and a linked skidded turn are one of the first turns that you should learn. There are several ways to make these turns on the slopes but the basics of the turns are the same. A skidded turn is a turn preformed while your snowboard is skidding across the slope. This is very useful for slopes that may have hard packed snow or ice.

First lets look at performing a basic skidded turn. Begin practicing your skidded turns on a slope that you are comfortable with. Ride down the slope with your knees bent slightly and face your shoulders in the direction that you wish to travel. As you ride down the slope pick a point where you will execute your turn. When you approach this point simply push your back leg out thus forcing your snowboard to skid along its side down the hill. Now shift your weight onto your front foot and you will begin to move in the direction that your snowboard is pointing.

While this is the basic procedure for a skidded turn, there are some finer points to keep in mind that will almost seem like another technique. When you are skidding down a hill raising one end of your snowboard to a higher angle than the other will also make it turn. The reason that this works is because the end of your snow board that has a higher angle will bite in to the snow a little harder than the other end thus causing that end to slow down and force the snowboard to rotate.

Another option that sometimes favored is the hip rotation technique. And begin by skidding down a hill. When you are ready to turn simply rotate your hips in the direction that you wish your snowboard to rotate. Rotating your hips will naturally cause your body to shift its weight to accomplish the turn and push the correct end of the snowboard in the direction that it needs to go to turn.

Which method is more correct depends upon you and what you wish to get out of snowboarding. The easiest option is the third way, to rotate your hips. The most technical way that also builds up skill for other maneuvers is the second way. The key is to know your riding style and to get out there and try each method to see what works for you.

When you are on the slopes practicing your turns you may also wish to practice a linked skidded turn. A linked skidded turn is the act of going from your skidded turn to another. One important point is to make sure that you allow a few seconds to travel before turning in the other direction. If you turn too quickly you run the risk of catching the downhill edge of your snowboard and bailing very fast.

Learning and practicing skidded turns are an essentially part of snowboarding and depending upon the style you prefer may help you with other tricks that you will soon be learning. Try each of the techniques mentioned here and learn to use each method regardless of what your favorite method is. This extra experience will make you more confident on the slopes and will round out your skills thus opening more doors later on when you are ready to try new tricks.

There was a mountainbike downhill race at the Vitranc slope in Kranjska gora on Saturday. Amateur and professional racers from Slovenia and abroad took on the genuine Slovenian roots. :D

We fucking found a shopping cart!
And you know what you do when you find a shopping cart?

RIDE ON IT BITCHEEEES!

Janice's (the girl behind me) totally cool. She was willing to push me AND ride on the shopping cart. My other friends were being wussy-pirates, and wouldn't dare go near Catherine.
Oh yea, we named her Catherine.

And oh god Lady Luck must awefully love us, because we found a slope!
My genius-ness activated, and lead to this...

But my awesome brain didn't really take in account of why people usually wouldn't do this...

... it's better high quality. :/

It was loooooads of fun tho.
GO DO IT NOW!
Even after we fell, we were still LOLing from the adrenaline.

I also bought my first ever WEBCAM! :D
Ahahahaha, never realized how awesome it is.

Love y'all!

I figure, I haven't posted anything truly unique and inspiring for a while (except my artwork, of course :P). So, I was recently visiting Victor Navone's blog (a super talented individual and a friend), and he posted this amazing video of these insane, extreme longboarders (with a hint of fashion I might add). The camera work is absolutely mindblowing. Enjoy: (Hint: follow the HD link to enjoy it in.....H...D...)

[caption id="attachment_205" align="alignnone" width="213" caption="twilight movie"][/caption]

it is so damn overrated. people/teens are going crazy over it; on Y!A [answers], on booksie, on facebook... my god. lol i'm sorry, i used to be a fan of the book series but after reading the 2nd and 3rd one, i honestly could not find it in me to read the fourth installment. the lack of a good plotline was boring me to death. it was mortifying for me because i was expecting a lot from it. it was extremely good in the first book but it just went downhill from there... i happened to be one of the lucky ones who read the book before it even rose to popularity & even became a movie [because i am such a booknerd lol.. it also happened to me with the Girl With the Pearl Earring book] and i was intrigued by it for a number of reasons. the year after that, it was seriously all over the place and 'the next book is out! omg! i just have to have it!' rampage came along... one of my friends is an avid fan and i respect that. i just don't think the following books carried over the alluring feel of the very first book. and now there's a movie.. who is that guy? from harry potter film, right? the one who died in the triwizard(?) games.. "cedric", right? hahaha i don't even know his name and i'm too lazy to look it up right now, but i honestly cannot forget him as being cedric when i see him onscreen.. there's that characteristic aura he has that when he acts, he can't eliminate it. for example, when you look at michelle pfeiffer in a specific movie [ie] i a sam, you don't see her as the cat woman from the batman returns. see what i mean? lol anyways, it looks like a decent movie. i'd love to know what scenes they'll put for the movie and which ones they cut.

ps: no getting pissed off over my personal opinion. if you have a valid arguement, state it diplomatically. =)

Woke up about an hour ago, another stressful day. I haven't written for about two days now, but the mood has been far beyond bad to cope with. I was unable to get things going with this blog. Anyway back to almost normal. Lately, I've been lost in my mind, yesterdays events really shook my mind and it hasn't been normal since. My mind has been filled with worry, I have been doing things without knowing I have been doing them. I feel as if my life is on a disctructive auto-pilot moving toward a slow and agonizing rock bottom. While life is hard at the moment, things can still get me to smile. Seeing how my family is doing and feeling the support of my parents have put some of the pieces of my heart back together. I haven't felt support from my parents in a while, an I now realize that that's one thing that's been missing in my life. Although life should be taking a turn for the better soon, I am still left in this agonizing phase where everything seems to be going downhill. I will however, try to keep the faith and wish for the best.
