This item was brought to my attention recently - it was a closing speech made by the Dutch Minister of International Development, Mr Bert Koenders, at a conference called "Knowledge on the Move" that took place earlier this year. The colleague who sent it to me highlighted some of the messages that dealt with IP issues. Many of us receive financial support from the Dutch government so I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the position of the minister on the topic.

I will just make a series of quotes, if you wish to read the full speech text please visit the above link.

"at global level, knowledge that is relevant for development needs to be accessible and affordable, not locked up behind copyrights or patents. After all, the justification for exclusive intellectual property rights and their international harmonisation lies in the public interests they serve, which include poverty reduction and sustainable development in my view."

"I would also urge Dutch universities and research institutes to adopt institutional IP policies that take account not only of valorisation of knowledge and incentives for researchers, but also the importance of access to knowledge and freedom to operate for development purposes."

"access to knowledge is more important than possession of knowledge"

It has been been an incredible experience to have witnessed Dr Pam Miller in action, sharing her expertise and enthusiasm in a way that inspired our teachers to carry on, and re-commit themselves to continuous self-improvement.

Moreover, it feels good to be sufficiently equipped for the "last run" in terms of revision with the candidates before the impending practical exam.

It is worth mentioning that colleagues who sacrificed their last Saturday of the school vacation to attend the workshop showed enviable levels of dedication, which those who registered, but failed to show up without reasons provided, cannot boast. After all, we are doing it not only for our own development, but also, and that's the ultimate purpose of all, for the sake of our children...

Thanks, everyone who attended! We all know, it was so worth while!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been part of a team from Microsoft, Conchango and National Rail Enquiries building a proof of concept. On Wednesday 1 October, at the TechNet event in London at which Steve Ballmer spoke, we showed a live demo of some of what we had built in the three week proof of concept. The concept we proved is the use of National Rail Enquiries services in multiple channels. National Rail Enquiries already have a very popular Vista gadget available that allows you to see live train departure information on your desktop. Prior to starting the proof of concept, we held a two day architectural workshop what services and applications rail users need to make their experience of using trains even better. The priority sample applications were an Outlook Add-In, a Windows Mobile application, a new way of presenting live train information on the web and an internal dashboard application. Those of you who attended the TechNet event on Wednesday will have seen the first three of these applications in action.

The Outlook Add-In enables users to book travel time. Most of us have appointments in our Outlook calendar. Some of these appointments require travel. The add-in lets you select the appointment and plan your train journey to and from the appointment. When you select the trains you want to take, it books time in your diary automatically – in the detail of this travel time there is information about the selected journey and an earlier and later journey should everything not run to plan. It’s simply formatted so that it reads well on your mobile device. It also links directly to the live train information on the web.

Speaking of the web, we set out to build something that would enable you to get the information you want quickly and as intuitively as possible. So, we settled on using Silverlight using DeepZoom to navigate around Virtual Earth imagery, on top of which we overlay track and train information. You can zoom in to your chosen station and get station information, see the trains in the area (blue for on time, red for late) and get information on them, too. And, even better than that, the train positions are updated so they move. Here’s a peek at what it looks like:

The map can be embedded in the National Rail Enquiries site and there’s a button that allows you to expand it to a full screen view (which is the view I’ve used above.) Given the popularity of the National Rail Enquiries site, scalability was a primary consideration. When you think that there are in the region of half a million visits per day to the site and thousands of trains, you can see it would be easy to design an application that would not scale. We used a state service which holds a model of the train network on the server – thus minimising the network traffic that would result from this model being held on the client given that every client would have to get updates from the server. This way a client only gets the information it needs. The other thing to note about the service is that it has SQL Server 2008 at its heart – we made usage of the geospatial capabilities to store information about tracks and stations.

The last application we demoed was a mobile phone application that enables you to check what time the next train leaves, if it’s on time, when it’s due to arrive and what platform it’s leaving from. Given that this is a mobile application, it’s written using the .NET Compact Framework 3.5. It takes advantage of local storage (for instance the list of stations is held on the device) and features of the compact framework such as multithreading while using a web service to get live information.

All in all, I think this is a great demonstration of how your architecture can cover multiple delivery channels taking advantage of different devices. I’ve already been using the mobile application (someone needs to test it) – and my journeys have involved less waiting in stations as a result.

Forestry education in recent years has largely failed to adequately respond to the dynamics in forestry practice, the demands of the job market and the challenges of new global forestry paradigms.

This policy brief consolidates recommendations of the first global workshop on forestry education held in September 2007, at the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Nairobi, Kenya. Attended by 85 participants from 29 countries representing Africa, Asia, North and South America and Europe, the workshop deliberated on vital issues for guiding, coordinating and linking relevant institutions and stakeholders in the process of transforming forestry education. They agreed that:

increased investment in forestry capacity is imperative

improved coordination mechanisms are key at national, regional and global scales to reinforce the quality and content of forestry education and training

enhanced harmonisation of forestry with other related sectors is needed in order to achieve synergy of strategies and actions

regional and global mechanisms for collaboration in forestry education be established and sustained

The brief asserts that major changes in forestry education, research and practice are urgently needed to improve relevance and popularise forest science, technologies and practices. Obvious implications for neglecting forestry education are noted as:

schools of forestry will continue to produce inadequate graduates, lacking the required expertise to handle the emerging complex societal and environmental challenges

forestry professional ethics could deteriorate further, leading to indiscriminate destruction of natural resources - the backbone of human livelihood

due to the link between agriculture and forestry, the destruction of forests may lead to water flow challenges impacting on food security

our knowledge and capacity to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change will remain weak, further accelerating global warming, flash floods and droughts

further losses of biodiversity will deny the world of important plants and animals with the potential to solve health and other problems

Ça signifie donc qu’on régresse.

C’est É-NOR-ME.

India has a population of 1,138,900,000 today. Yet very very little part of India can be bracketed as developed, other than that the 10 Major cities in India is at large, still a Large Village. Is this good or bad is not be judged.

The bar chart above shows the position of different states concerning literacy in 2001.

Kerala’s achievement is remarkable because the proportion of literate people in the area that now constitutes that state at the time of independence was, although higher than rest of India, still low. We need strong educational reforms, which is in direct conflict with political agenda.

India is one of the most diverse nations in terms of religion. Even though Hindus form close to 80 percent of the population, the Indian Muslims form the third largest Muslim population in the world, and the country has large Sikh and Christian populations. India has a Hindu President Mrs. Pratibha Patil, Muslim Vice President Mr. M. Hamid Ansari, a Sikh Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and a Catholic Defence Minister A.K.Antony. The powerful leader of the Congress Partry Sonia Gandhi is a Christian, while the leader of the opposition is L.K. Advani, a Hindu. India had a prominent former Defence Minister George Fernandes, a Christian and a Hindu minister controlling foreign affairs. India's IAF Chief Fali H. Major is a Parsi. So much tollerance still like local 9/11's we have Bomb blasts, Gujarats’, Separate States, Kashmir, Religious Conversions and different law for each religion.

Now we have to deal with a uneducated public who think Mahabharata actually happened and what their political leaders and *Film Starts* are saying is actually true. Not to forget a few who thinks that solving Kashmir is hard problem, we have greatest educational institutions like IITs and IIMS right, these are people who can solve almost any problem ask them or hell ask me, I will tell you political morons a solution, if you want.

All that said and done, when one-third of India's population is living below Poverty line 75.6% of the population living below $2(aprox 80 INR) a day, How will we innovate and why?

Now to the people reading this blog "You and Me are not any well off, if you remember correctly we are still cheap labors"

A poor, uneducated and desperate nation, which is craving for a basic life can never progress, people need to be free for a nation to be free. We must have a look at UK how, after WWII they lost every thing and built a better country .

Continuing in my quest to experience the goodness of the new .NET 3.5 SP1 stuff from the ground up,

Continuing in my quest to experience the goodness of the new .NET 3.5 SP1 stuff from the ground up, I installed Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition. After all, now that I have my AdventureWorks database up and running, I want to experiment with ASP.NET data scaffolding (ASP.NET Dynamic Data), JavaScript Intellisense, ADO.NET Entity Framework, ADO.NET Data Services, and many of the other great new features in this release. As Scott Hanselman and Carl Franklin recently discussed on Hanselminutes, this framework update really should have been .NET 3.6 there is so much new stuff in there!

The Problem

So I was sorely disappointed to start my first web site and was prompted with this confusing dialog box after doing a File -> New -> Web Site:

Selecting a different version of the framework didn't fix anything, I had no web site templates! How was I going to follow all of these simple step-by-step tutorials if I couldn't get past step 1? From the scores of other people having the same issue, I could tell I was not alone in my frustration.

Allow me to back up a bit and describe how I got into this predicament -- it didn't take long...

After installing, I did the natural thing and clicked on the item in my start menu labeled "Microsoft Visual Studio 2008" as it seemed to be the only logical choice. Verifying the properties shows that this shortcut is pointing to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\Devenv.exe, which is exactly what I would have expected from experience with other versions of Visual Studio (insert snide remark about seemingly old version number in the "Common7" part of the path).

The Solution

No telling if this will be the same problem that everyone else seemed to be having, but it appears I just opened the wrong .exe!?! I can't really blame myself though, since the installation process seems to be a bit misleading. There is no shortcut anywhere to the correct application which is actually called VWDExpress.exe:

Launching this executable manually gives me the much anticipated web site templates, and what I need to move on . One subtle note is that my menu path to get to this is actually File -> New Web Site. This path is one level shallower than the full blown studio version, but they both share the same keyboard shortcut of Shift + Alt + N

So, if you read the whole post above and you're still not quite sure what I am getting at, just look at the log in your development environment:

No web site templates (bad):

Web site templates (good):

The Details

To clarify whether or not this should apply to you, I am running all free versions of the tools provided my Microsoft. If you have a full-blown version of Visual Studio, you may not experience this problem when using the standard IDE. I first installed SQL Server 2008 Express, then Visual Web Developer 2008 Express.

This means that I now have the following versions of these files:

devenv.exe

9.0.30729.1

There are three major types of retailing.

The first is the market, a physical location where buyers and sellers converge. Usually this is done in town squares, sidewalks or designated streets and may involve the construction of temporary structures (market stalls).

The second form is shop or store trading. Some shops use counter-service, where goods are out of reach of buyers, and must be obtained from the seller. This type of retail is common for small expensive items (e.g. jewelry) and controlled items like medicine and liquor. Self-service, where goods may be handled and examined prior to purchase, has become more common since the 20th century.

A third form of retail is virtual retail, where products are ordered via mail, telephone or online without having been examined physically but instead in a catalog, on television or on a website. Sometimes this kind of retailing replicates existing retail types such as online shops or virtual marketplaces such as Amazon.[3]

Buildings for retail have changed considerably over time. Market halls were constructed in the Middle Ages, which were essentially just covered marketplaces. The first shops in the modern sense used to deal with just one type of article, and usually adjoined the producer (baker, tailor, cobbler). In the 19th century, in France, arcades were invented, which were a street of several different shops, roofed over. Counters, each dealing with a different kind of article, were invented; it was called a department store. One of the novelties of the department store was the introduction of fixed prices, making haggling unnecessary, and browsing more enjoyable. This is commonly considered the birth of consumerism [4] In cities, these were multi-story buildings which pioneered the escalator.

In the 1920s the first supermarket opened in the United States, heralding in a new era of retail: self-service. Around the same time the first shopping mall was constructed [5] which incorporated elements from both the arcade and the department store. A mall consists of several department stores linked by arcades (many of whose shops are owned by the same firm under different names). The design was perfected by the Austrian architect Victor Gruen[6] All the stores rent their space from the mall owner. By mid-century, most of these were being developed as single enclosed, climate-controlled, projects in suburban areas. The mall has had a considerable impact on the retail structure and urban development in the United States. [7]

Scott Guthrie over at MS made an announcement that the open source jQuery library will be integrated into Visual Studio.
Awesome.

It's always good to see the communities tools and voice being heard and integrated, and this is one of those tools (the jQuery library: http://jquery.com/) I use often,
Anyway, this is Bushy Park carpark near Broom Clumps where they are about to do a lot of development work. My own critique is that it isn't that bad and I enjoyed doing it but the nearest gravel mound should have been a lot darker (even though it wasn't in real life); the dark grey above the yellow truck is too dark and makes the picture jump too much. Also, I purposely worked very very loosely, especially the sky and the background trees and althought you might think this is good it does mean that when I cramp up on the caterpillar wheels they just look dead wrong. Oh well, onwards and downwards - sorry upwards!

It is so sad that Montreal has decided to let one developer develop an entire city neighborhood. It s all about ownership and administration. Hey MacDonald's! Want an exclusive contract for an entire city neighborhood? Sign here and we gaurantee no one else will ever sell burgers there. Hey Wal Mart! Ready for Downtown? Man, who on earth would want to live there? yes, sad, and on it goes.....

Neutrino detectors are often built underground in order to isolate the detector from cosmic rays and other background radiation. The coast of Pylos, in the south western part of the Peloponnese, an ideal location for pioneer Neutrino experiments, since it's geographical position is close to the greatest depth of the Mediterranean Sea (5200 m. at the area of the Hellenic Trench). Pylos is also home to the NESTOR Institute for Deep Sea Research, Technology and Neutrino Astroparticle Physics. The Institute is staffed by a scientific team from the Physics Department of the University of Athens, specialising in research and deployment of phenomena in deep water. A large underwater telescope, 10 times higher than the Eiffel Tower, is being constructed, and its purpose is to monitor and track neutrinos from outer space. It is one of four similar projects in the world. The sea water is important because it absorbs most of the light as well as other electromagnetic radiation, allowing only the ever elusive neutrinos to pass through. It is the great depth, combined with the close proximity to the shore that Pylos offers as its comparative advantages in competing with the two other European observatories - Antares, in France, and Nemo, in Italy. The prize will be the selected site for KM3Net, the future European infrastructure for neutrino telescopy. The 24th International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics (NEUTRINO 2010) is scheduled to take place in Athens in January 2010.
After leaving Hounslow I toured the area for a suitable subject. Rejecting scaffolded buildings as too complex, I parked in Twickenham to explore on foot. I was delighted to find this overloaded skip in a quiet side street behind the Council offices with a wall opposite which I could sit on.

After 10 minutes I gained another interested party. A respectable looking gentleman appeared and spent several minutes circling the skip and seeming to view it from different angles. I was just wondering whether he was looking for useful scrap when again he sidled towards me. "Are you painting the skip", he enquired. "Yes, I said". "Oh" he said, "Its amazing isn't it. I like to do a bit of recycling myself". Not sure what to respond we had a disjointed conversation about the waste of materials. he complimented my pciture and went away happy.

Not much to say about this one - except i am getting a little bit depressed that my paintings all look the same however hard I try to loosen my style.

As usual, by now I was frozen and my parking meter was 5 mins overun so I hastened back to take a warming break at home and a pee.
